    Strength:

Easy set up, Great picture quality, Great sound and it has the most important feature the built in dolby digital decoder.

    Weakness:

    None as of yet.

The sony dvpns400d is a great dvd player. It has that sleek look, great picture quality, great sound what more could you ask for in a dvd player?! The reason why I bought this model is because of the dolby digital decoder thats built in. Its very hard to find this feature in dvd players these days why I have no idea. Any way this player has so far lived up to my expectations and so far Ive had no problems with it and hopefully the people who gripe about this feature and that feature will give it a chance. My advice for them is read the manuel first and read it throughly because 9 times out of 10 the problem doesnt lie with the player it lies with them and how they are hooking it up. I also have a sony dvns700p progressive player and this model to is absolutly awsome in fact the dvd 400p run closely in quality to it except for that it doesnt have the progressive feature but hey what the hell for the price and the quality this player brings who cares right? Id recommend the dvpns400d to anyone whos looking for a great dvd experience. Its a great player and you cant go wrong with this one.

    Strength:

Built in dolby digital decoder. Excellent picture quality. Excellent sound. Well laid out controller. Very easy set up.

    Weakness:

    None.

Ive read a couple of the reviews on this site mostley the negetive ones and it has made me think god what a bunch of nit pickers! This is with out a doubt one of the best sony dvd players on the market today. The picture quality is excellent, the sound is awsome and for me it plays excellent and I have no complaints. For the price you cant go wrong. Im not one of these freaks who expect everything to be perfect and this player is perfect for a person who dont need all that crap that is included on all those other high priced players. What attracted me to this player was the built in dolby digital decoder and its sleek look. I would recomend this playes to any one who is not into all that junk you find in other players. No dvd player is perfect and to expect one to be is just stupid. My advise to the people who are having problems with this player is to read the manuel from end to end because I guarentee you youll probibly find that its not the player its probibly you thats screwing things up.

    Strength:

    Good music reproduction

    Weakness:

Skips music CD, no mp3 CD allows...

Simply said... this player did not carry the usual reputation that sony carries in its products. Just check out your local huge electronics store and you would see that this model has the highest number of returns or open box as compared to other similar brands. That should tell you something about this player. Unless you get it at an extremely good deal, its better that you shop a while longer and select the best player you can get. I returned the player in just two weeks...

    Strength:

Easy cheesy, lot's of features buy you don't have to read the whole manual just to start a movie. Husband very excited that it plays CD-R's. Wonderful.

    Weakness:

    None thus far.

Very happy that I chose Sony and this model. I tried out the JVC for a couple of days, very slow. This seems to listen to commands quickly.
The remote control is great. Only have to use one hand! (Marvelous when I happen to be lying on the other one)

Anyways, I would highly recommend this DVD player to anyone, especially someone that can hardly figure out how to plug a TV in, like me.

    Strength:

    Same as previous reviews.

    Weakness:

    Still haven't detected any.

This is my third review of this product. Since I used this site as part of my research before purchasing my DVD player, I believe people should offer an ongoing update of their experience with the reviewed product. I've yet to experience a single problem with this DVD player. And I've thrown more than a hundred DVDs at it. No skips, no sound blips. Nothing but quality. It plays my CDs without flaw. To be honest, I bought a DVD player to play DVDs, not CDs. So, I don't think it's fair to judge this player on how it performs on CDs. Sure, I'd want both features to work. But, as far as DVDs are concerned, this is a quality player. Again, I would recommend the Sony DVPNS400D without hesitation.

    Strength:

Picture and sound!!! outputs and looks...

    Weakness:

Sensitive to scratchy and dusty CD's...

Bought this player for it's fine stereosound! Couse it has, by far, the best stereosound of all dvd's with this kind of pricetag out there...

I'm very happy sofar except for it's way to handle CD's... they have to be in perfect shape and I mean PERFECT!!! or atleast as perfect as an 1-3 year old CD can be... So check for scratches on your rental DVD's before you go home with'em.

As for picture quality it is superb... No problems at all... Two SCART's for RGB signal and two digital out (one opt. and one coax.) for best sound... nothing new in this review accually...

OH yeah... allmost forgot... The remote is super also...

    Strength:

The CD / DVD combo is nice - saves space.

    Weakness:

DVD skipping. Sluggish opening the tray after powering on.

The DVD is extremely sensitive to fingerprints or lint / dust on the surface. I obtain (some) DVDs from the library and many (even) with light scratches WILL NOT continuously play more than a few minutes any track on the disk! Others with fingerprints (alone) cause interruption from seconds to many minutes. I placed a fingerprint on one purposely and it would not play a ~30 minute section(the audio continued)! Wiping a scratch free disk helps considerably but if even the slightest lint remains there may be dozens of interruptions from a few seconds to a minute or more. Audio wise, the unit seems nearly "bullet proof", having (only) a few audio skips with badly scratched disks.

I had a Fischer DVD unit for a year and had to wipe only a couple of disks. There were few dropouts, even with moderately scratched disks.

    Strength:

    The 5.1 decoder.

    Weakness:

No S-video cable was included. But most people will want a better shielded cable than the manufacturer would supply anyway, so not that big of a deal.

This is the second DVD player i've owned. I had a few problems with my first player, not to mention the fact it was not capable of decoding 5.1.
I am very pleased with this player. The picture is great.
The remote is very easy to use. It has component video outs, which is a plus, and the 5.1 decoder sounds great.
I would recomend this player even to my friends who like very high end electronics.
The only thing it does not have is progressive scan. But for those of us who don't own an HDTV, that's ok.
For what you get for the money, you can't go wrong.
    it's a great buy!

Well, for those of you who are have already reviewed my previous post, here is an update. I have played several dvd's with my new unit and so far no problems. The player did pause in between of one movie but did not skip or return to the beginning as the S560D did. I believe Sony may have actually worked the bug out of the S560D since this unit is to be replaced by the NS400D. At least that is what I have been told. Now, if I can just figure out how to use the surround mode with the player, I'll be set. I am therefore going to to up my ratings which you should be be able to see below.
