    Strength:

    5.1, lots of outputs

    Weakness:

    Sounds like absolute crap

I just bought this model again today and it has the same problem. The CD player sounds like garbage (no, not the band). I like the number of outputs, however. I think I'll have to get something besides Sony. This player just plain worthless for music. Stay away from it!! If anyone can recommend a better brand/model, with 5.1 at a similar price, please let me know.

Buyer beware! I recently purchased a Sony DVP-NS400D DVD player (my first DVD unit). At the time, I also decided to purchase a couple of DVD's including Terminator 2 (a deluxe edition with a silver metal case).

This DVD player will not play the DVD. It gets about half-way through the movie and then hangs up. You can't even manually jump to scenes past #32. I thought the unit was defective so I exchanged it for another and same problem. The disc works fine on another (older) DVD player.

Has anyone else ever experienced this problem? There was a sheet of paper inside the disc case warning about the possibility that this disc won't perform well in certain players (apparently issued by www.thx.com). What's the story here?

    Strength:

    Good picture, CD-R playback

    Weakness:

    Layer skips!

I am returning this unit. Last night I watched "Vertical Limit" and during chapter 13, there was a big pause, and then it skipped about 20 seconds of the movie. I watched the same chapter on my computer, and no skip at all. The same thing happened on another movie I watched. This is caused by "layer switching", and it is not a problem with all DVD players- read the Pansonic RV-30 (RV-31)reviews- no skipping. I am also looking at the Sony 560 reviews (the 400 is a newer model), and it looks like Sony has some big quality problems. This skipping may eventually turn in to "chapter skipping", based on the 560 reviews. This skipping makes this player unacceptable in my opinion, as it is totally annoying in the middle of a movie. I guess with all the money Sony is loosing on the PS-2, they are cutting corners. I am going to return this player and try the Panasonic.

    Strength:

    Reads CD-R & CD-RW, Dolby Digital 5.1 Decoding Built-in

    Weakness:

    SKIPS!!!

Picture isgood, the component picutre output is a little greener than normal but not really noticable and it actually made some scenes look better. Although, The Matrix looked puke-green at times.

I was watching Stargate and was toward the end of the movie when all of a sudden the movie randomly skipped to a different chapter!

I immediately stopped the movie and inspected the DVD, there wasn't a scratch on it. I put the disc back in a went back to the same scene, it didn't skip again, but it paused at that same place like it was searching for the next data track. The DVD player was making noises but eventually resumed.

I started checking other websites and other people have complained about this same problem. This seems to be a problem that plagues this particular model.I'm returning my Sony DVD player very disappointed.

I expected better than this from Sony. The DVD player has good features, but having a movie play from start to finish with incident is a basic requirement which this DVD player does not meet on some movies.

    Strength:

Very easy to use, awesome remote, very clear picture, many settings options...

    Weakness:

    none

Geez, I hate it when a few reviewers give horrible ratings to such good products. My DVD player does not skip at all. It handles T2:Ultimate Edition perfectly whereas my computer DVD player (Sony) could not handle it due to advanced layering.

Also, for the people who are complaining about lack of DTS decoding - crutchfield only has TWO DVD players that include DTS decoding (out of ~25 models). DTS has not even proven to be much different from 5.1. For the average user, you wouldnt even be able to tell the difference between the two. Don't worry about no DTS. This player can still send DTS signals JUST FINE to a DTS-decoding receiver.

For $250, you can't go wrong with this model.

    Strength:

Usual Sony looks, Quality Build and Feel, Easy to use on-screen menu's

    Weakness:

Remote controls only TV volume, 3-4 second pause during layer change

After ready hundreds of reviews and procrastinating over it for months I finally purchase the Sony NS400D. I was looking for a player which, firstly did not skip (I also own a PS2 which is possible the worst attempt at a DVD player), secondly looked good and was of high quality with picture and sound.

Well although the Sony has excellent picture and sound, and also looks good, the 3-4 second layer change was very unsatisfactory. There is nothing more annoying than watching a movie than for it to stop for 3-4 seconds. This is fairly major in my opinion.

I've since taken it back, a replaced it for a Panasonic DV-444K which was not only cheaper, slimmer and of the same quality, but the disc layer change is only slightly noticeable.

    Strength:

    good picture

    Weakness:

    player skips

this is my second player. the first was an open box. the sound would cut out on both rental and new dvd's. I returned the player and got a new in the box player. the first day it skipped again just a few second and again the audio cut out just briefly. I worry very much about sony quality. I plan on returning this playe and getting my money back!!!!

    Strength:

    Works perfectly,slim,reasonably priced

    Weakness:

Very sensitive to dust on discs

The picture and sound are just fine, no skipping or stalling on layer changes if the DVD is perfectly clean. Also tried it with audio CD's and CDR's. Sound is good on both. It's just fine for my home use.I'm using the S-video input to my 27" TV and the picture is superb.

    Strength:

a myriad of controls, almost to the point of absurdity, lots of toys on board. Excellent picture control, remote well laid out.

    Weakness:

    No Zoom
Remote can't be programmed to JVC home theater code (no code for jvc).

I've only played with this unit for about a week now. A lot has surprised me. For one thing, I read that the tray and internal workings were very noisy, in some of the reviews here: no so at all! The tray opens up with barely any sound, and when playing, with vol. on mute, I can't hear it at all inside. At first I thought it wasn't on, but when I saw the movie playing I was impressed. Picture is great on my Toshiba, using Svideo. Color is also good, not at all overly green as I have also heard. There are a multitude of options and controls on the remote, on screen, and on the player itself.
I chose the Sony over the Panasonic rv41 because of these features: Parental control, instant replay, and volume control on the remote. The Pana had Mp3 (as we all know) but I have a portable unit for mp3.
    So far I'm impressed.
