Strength:

Brilliant picture quality at rgb and s-video.

Weakness:

Poor sound through analogue outputs.

Bought this in May 2004 for £100 from Superfi, only sold it due to upgrading to Arcam DV88 for one box player. Lost me a box, and lost me picture quality as well. The Sony was astounding for the price, only recently has my new Pioneer matched it, not beat it though. Powerful visual setup options, great black level, but audio analogue outputs very muddy. The 930p is well rated, but if you value value (!) then get the 730, same player with none QS components - but same result in the end.

Strength:

Good picture. Reliable. Decent remote for equipment these days.

Weakness:

None.

I have owned this unit for over three years and it has never skipped a beat. Never. The picture is very good. The unit plays some pretty banged up discs without any problem at all. I do not use it for music. I have had it hooked into a 56" progressive scan Panasonic wide screen and a new Samsung 50" DLP. Oddly, the picture was a little better with the Panasonic, but I don't blame the DVD player for that. I thin the meuns are laid out well and there are a good number of options to choose from. Most of all, no repairs, no hiccups, etc. after playing a ton of DVD's during the past three years.

Strength:

lots of features

Weakness:

Reverse 3:2 pulldown weak compared to XBR Cinemotion reverse 3:2 pulldown.

I purchased this player to provide a progressive scan source for my 57" XBR widescreen. The player is connected via YIQ component cables. After viewing a couple movies, my impression is that the picture seems to have less artifacts of the reverse 3:2 pulldown process (sharp or flat surfaces having a pulsating visual effect during pans) when the XBR is receiving an interlaced signal and using its own CINEMOTION chip to create the progressive image than using a straight progressive output from the player. I have another SONY DVD that has component out. I am going to return the NS715P (NS700 new model) and use the old one.

Strength:

Sharp colourfull picture on a HDTV.Auto aspect ration control for anamophic movies on 4:3 tvs.Great DTS5.1 and DD5.1

Weakness:

Dimmer on/off button should of been put on face plate and the remote, not 3 menus deep in the interface using the remote. No zoom. No DVD Audio. No MP3

One reviewer complained of this player not having aspect ratio control. This is not true because it does. I have a Toshiba TN50X81 50" 4:3 HDTV with Progressive Scan. I originaly tried this tv with a Pioneer DV343 dvd player and it made gladiator look stretched. I tryed the Sony with gladiator in progressive scan mode and without and it converted the picture to a "letterbox" look and it looks as close as your going to get to HDTV (In progressive scan mode). Im using $300 in Monster Video HDTV and optical cables.I recommend to everyone to spend at least 20% of your home theatres cost in cables. There is a noticable differance in quality of sharpness and colour. No use spending $5000 on a home theatre then using kmart shopper cables as your link.As others have said the superbit version of The Fifth Element looks HDTV like.(Great dvd to use to show how good your system can look and sound).Using my Sony STR-DB840 and Klipsch Pro Media THX PC speakers n 10" Cerwin Vega HT-S10A Sub and centre speaker this dvd player makes it better than going to the movies. And i had no problem with Star Wars Ep 1 or any other dvd.The movie looks awesome (not stretched) and sounds just as good.Paid $625 CDN after taxes at London Drugs 10 months ago

Strength:

Nice design, great picture, face plate menu controls, easy to use OSD. A great choice for either an expensive home theatre setup, or just for a simple living room.

Weakness:

The all mighty power button. Too bad the remote doesn''t come in silver.

Before I purchased the NS700P, I was using a Playstation 2 console as my DVD player.(Which was a bad choice considering it burnt the console out and I had to replace it within a year of the purchase date.) I''ve always thought highly of Sony for its quality and reliability with its TV''s,(I have a 27" TV in my living room which was purchased in 1991, which has only needed minor repairs once.) so naturally I looked into the Sony DVD players. I was looking for a player with Progressive Scan capabilities, a single tray,(I find the concept of a DVD changer dumb.) and in a moderate price range. All signs pointed to the NS700P. I came to this site to see what other people had to say about the product, and after reading almost every review posted, I decided to trial it out in my own home. (They told me I could bring it back within the standard thirty day period.) I took it out of the box, connected the Component and optical cables,(Optical cables not included with the player.) and after going through the simple quick setup, I was watching Gladiator through its 6.1 DTS-ES setting. The Progressive scan image is crystal clear, and the sound is near perfect.(Please note the TV used was the Sony KV36XBR450, and the audio through a 6.1 DTS-ES reciever.) I felt that for this review, mearly reviewing the product while in use with an expensive home theatre setup wasn''t fair to thoes who are just looking for a DVD player. So, I connected it to the 1991 Sony 27" TV I have in my living room(mentioned above), without using the component or optical cables, and watched the same movie. The picture is still sharp, and cyrstal clear. And the credit to the audio is still well diserved. The only drawbacks to the product that I can find, is the "Universal Power Button," and the price. If you accidentally hit the power button on the console while it is in use, it is exactly the same as pulling the plug. The other issue is the price tag. $600 Canadian for a DVD player is a bit steep, but if you want Progressive Scan, and have the $$, it is well worth it. If you don''t, you might concider falling back to one of Sony''s cheaper DVD players. If it is for simple viewing, or for an extravagant home theatre setup, I would recommend the Sony NS700P to anyone who is looking for a new, or above average Progressive Scan DVD player.

Strength:

Great player so far...

Weakness:

None yet...

Let me just start off by saying that I am a dedicated Sony man. I have the sony DVP-S360-DVD player, STR-DB930 reciever, SLV-N70 vcr, SA-VE315 -5.1 speaker package, RMA-V2100 -touch pannel remote and even an old CDP-291 -cd player that I had bought back in 1984(wich is still kickn'' with no problems). So I know Sonys'' quality. It''s because of that old cd player that I now have all Sony gear. I had bought the DVP-S360 dvd player from Hi-Fi Buys on June 4th 2000. I paid 249 for the player and had been excited about all the movies I had been playing. I don''t even watch regular TV because of the picture quality. I come home from work and put in a movie, I eat dinner and watch a movie and before i go to bed at night, you guessed it, I watch a movie. So, with that said, my dvd players will be put to the test. I started to notice the "no disk" and C13:00 errors in November of 2001 so my errors occured a little later than everyone else, wich is funny due to the amount of hours put on the player. At first, I too thought that the player just need to be cleaned, but I thought that was funny because I clean the lens after every 10 hours of play time. So my next hunch was that the player is getting hot, since I have it sitting on my receiver. That did not change anything. So I checked out audioreveiw.com and read that all these people were having the same problem and that Sony was not doing anything about it. If I have one complaint about Sony it''s there customer support. I realize that Sony is a large company and they are very busy but if that don''t care enough about there customers there customers will not care about them. Even after all that being said I still went out and bought a Sony DVP-NS700P dvd player to replace the old one. I bought this dvd player only after visiting audioreview.coms'' page and seeing what people had said about the player. Even though I bought another Sony product after the 360 model dvd player I realize that I am in the small percent of people who will buy the same brand after dealing with a problem such as this. I hope Sony will do something about this problem to regain the loyalty of there customers. Hopefuly happy, Michael

For those of you w/out a high def tv >>> I really did not expect this player to have a richer picture than my previous Sony NS300P... but much to my surprise, using the same non high def tv(SONY 36" Wega)w/out using the progressive scan it is far more vivid and detailed. I really did not expect this since my connections were the same using the same high quality component video cable and digital audio (Monster Cables). I can only imagine what it would be like w/ high def tv. Do yourself a favor > Go out there and test one. I am hoping (pending due to wife''s dismay) to test this one soon w/ a new high def tv.
