Strength:

colour , style, sacd if youve got the software, built in everything

Weakness:

using internal dac is a poor option for cd etc, minor picture blocking, box strength, slow starter

well worth buying if you going to use all the facilities it offers, i.e your not going to upgrade too much, if you are buy a base model, excellent colour, loading is a bit slow

Strength:

Excellent picture for it''s price, silver instead of BORING black. Coaxial and Toslink digital outputs.

Weakness:

Sound is mediocre, but not really bad for this price point. Won''t play absolutely every DVD in progressive scan mode. Would like for it to play MP3''s...Would like MP3 to sound good. Wait, that''s another story.

The progressive output from this player is very very good, and when taking it''s price point into account, it''s quite excellent. You really would need to spend 10x this much on a Faroudja or Ayre or Meridian to get better, and then, it would only be worth it on a truly massive front projection system. The ubiquitous chroma bug is almost unnoticable on this unit, something I''ve only seen from Faroudjas and other expensive players. Sound wise, the analogue outputs on this unit leave something to be desired, IMHO, and with much respect to previous reviewers. My opinion is relative to an older generation Sony DVD player (I forget the model) for movies, and a much more expensive Linn CD player for music, which should, and does, sound a whole lot better (more rythmic, detailed, and quite a bit less grain)). But that shouldn''t matter, b/c the majority of people are going to use the digital output going to a surround processor, in which case any weaknesses (or strenghts!) of the internal DAC''s are entirely obviated. Yay. Since the audio is not worth faulting, the only things that bother me in my 3 months living w/ this slick li''l puppy is the fact that I have run across about 3 discs that it can''t seem to read in progressive scan mode, and only one of them was worth remembering anyway (X-Files: Fight the Future). That''s about 3/40 or 50 movies so far, and I can live with that. So? A GREAT value since I don''t care about DVD-Audio, and any DVD player w/ a built in AC3 decoder probl''y won''t sound good anyway. I liked it so much, I bought another one for my pops.

Strength:

CD playback is superb!

Weakness:

This is an EXCELLENT CD player! Smooth, clean sound that brings out the best in my collection. And no, this isn''''t a typo..CD PLAYER. Of all the disc players I''''ve heard and owned, this baby beats them hands down. Naturally, I bought it for DVD playback but was hooked when I heard the CD side of it. Now I find myself listening to CDs as much as watching DVDs. Sure, it''''s a great player for movies (just read the other reviews), but if you want a damned fine CD player that happens to play DVDs too, look no further than Sony''''s silver 700....and the remote is perfect!

Strength:

Works; Progressive; slim design; Great price for performance

Weakness:

Not as good as DV-37, but I''m OK with that

Yes, I only paid $150. I was buying over $2000 worth of speakers so the store mgr started discuonting everything. Cha Ching! Performance is great; video and audio. Remote is fine. Hooked to Mitsu 65"HDTV; w good component cable I looked at the Pioneer Elite DV-37 which is better, but I couldn''t justify the extra $600 for a product that will probably be replaced by a better technology in 2 years (low-price SACD/DVD recorder, etc). Great entry to DVD

I have my 700 hooked with monster component cables to a hitachi 53swx widescreen with the progressive on, but everything looks posterized the sky scenes look like the color is over modulated when I switch it to interlaced the picture looks great with just a little posterization. I have been thinking about getting a 9000 but am wondering if I will have the same problem. I called sony and they said it should not be happening. I have a 7000 also and it looks just a little better than the 700 - "I think", but interlaced only and no DTS. I don''t know if it''s the player or the monitor. I called sears to come look at it and of course they send somebody that has no clue what I am talking about, maybe I am to picky but I can''t even watch a movie peacefully because I am scanning each scene instead of paying attention to the story. I mainly happens on sky scenes and when their is smoke or fog.

Strength:

Great looking DVD player. Component output. Video and audio look and sound great. Have it hooked up to a Wega 32" XR TV.

Weakness:

Remote does not have as many features as the remote for the S570D and I miss the job/shuttle knob as well as the channel controls for the TV.

I had a Sony DVP-S570D and started having the C13 disc errors. The movie would skip a chapter and then just lock up. I returned it to ABC and they gave swapped it out for the NS700P. The unit seems to work well, but the C13 problems in my old unit did not start to appear after 6 months. Hopefully Sony fixed the bug and got it right this time.

Strength:

Great picture, great sound easy setup.

Weakness:

I just wanted to do a follow up on this player. Since Ive had it no problems and just love it. I wanted to make a comment about some of the reviews Ive seen on this site. People are complaining of a green tinge with the picture. Well if there is I have yet to see it. People who are saying this in their reviews are doing something wrong cause it aint the player. This player is the best that sony has come out with as of yet and I wouldnt exchange it for any other player.

Easy to use with a terrific picture

Bought this after seeing a friend's DVD perform. The picture quality compared with a VCR is striking. I like the skip and scan features and the fast forward to favorite scenes.

Strength:

When it works, it's flawless in my system.

Weakness:

50% DVD's come spin and then show "NO DISC" on the player.

Has anyone out there put a brand new DVD in their Sony NS700P and had it come up as "NO DISC" EVERY time? Do I just need a professional cleaning on the unit, or is there something deeper I may be ignorant to? They are all REGION 1 DVD's, and I can't find anything on the various packages to indicate that one movie has some feature different than another that would make it not work. Here is my list of NON working DVD's I just got for Christmas:

STAR WARS - The Phantom Menace
The Shawshank Redemption
The Matrix

A few I have that DO work are:
Dumb & Dumber
The Man in the Iron Mask

PLEEEEEEASE do e-mail me at pbusbey@famvid.com if you have any advice on this topic.

Bottom line though, as mentioned in 'Strenghts' above... when it works, I'm very pleased with the quality.
