Strength:

Very fast search feature. Solid tray. Great picture

Weakness:

Needs alot of tweaking.Owners Manual does not explain features well. Poor remote design

I first thought that I agreed with alot of negative reviews found here. I played the Dinosour DVD in progressive mode on my Panasonic 47 and was not at all impressed. There was alot of Ghosting and green so I thought I was going to return the Sony for something else.
Instead I starting working with the menu settings within the player and was able to get a very good picture. I got rid of the ghosting and cleaned up the green problem.
I have also run the chroma bug problem with the Fifth Element DVD and found no problems that I could detect.
This is a very good product for someone who takes some time tweak it.

Question to the guy who bought the NS700P. Are you playing it on an HDTV? or one that has 3:2 pulldown? Cause I just bought a SONY 61HS30, and am just wondering if I need a progressive scan DVD player like the NS700P? Seems like you would buy the 700P to play on normal TV's since the 700P has 3:2 pulldown and has Anamorphic downconversion. Are these features for playing on normal non HDTVs? Or am i just confused?

Strength:

Progressive scan output, remote, ease of operation, price

Weakness:

none as of yet

I just wanted to send this review out because after reading some of the others I was apprehensive about buying this. First let me say that to those who complained about the progressive scan colors being too green or too anything--I don't have a clue what you mean. i am using this dvd with a 61" Toshiba rear projection tv and a onkyo txds 797 receiver and the acoustic research hc2 speaker system along with an additional edge(6th speaker). The picture has been outstanding--looks as though you could walk right through your tv into the scene. now I used monster type 3 video cable and the fiber optic cable for sound--maybe those who encountered problems used cheaper cables --I don't know. But I would definitely recommend this unit to my best friends. The remote was easy, the menu's were easy to navigate through. I purchased this for $255 from J&R music.

Solid product, no problems after 2 to 3 hours of tweaking. Power button is not a problem just eject your dvd and let it stand and the auto power off will kick in. You never have to touch your unit's power button after the frist time.

Strength:

Progressive scan picture, good looks, price

Weakness:

no aspect ratio control

I loved my Onkyo DVD player but, when I upgraded to a Pioneer wide screen tv, I wanted a progressive scan player. I researched this player and waited for the ptice to come down. When Circuit City dropped the price to $300 a few months ago, I jumped on it and haven't looked back since.

Once you tweak the picture, the image looks quite sharp and detailed. The superbit version of The Fifth Element is stunning! The sound is not quite as good as my Onkyo, though. The main weakness is no aspect ratio control, as my tv locks into full screen when fed a progressive signal and non anamorphic look stretched. But you can easily go into the setup and turn off the progressive scan so that the tv can adjust the aspect ratio. At this price point, I'm not complaining. This DVD player is definitely worth a look.

This is a follow-up post to my 1st one. I tried the Pioneer DV-444 player and it produces a far better picture than this Sony does. I suggest that if you are looking to buy the Sony, take a look at the Pioneer. It is much better and doesn't cost too much more. I have the Pioneer DV-37 which produces better picture than the DV-444 or the Sony. But if you are looking for a DVD player under $400, go with the DV-444.

Strength:

Good interlaced picture.

Weakness:

Terrible progressive scan output.

I had this player for a day before returning it. I used it with a Sony 42" Plasma Screen. The output in progressive scan had a green overlay and was extremely pixelated. It gave a much clearer picture in interlace mode. I had read that low end progressive scans couldn't perform, and this system verified it. Aside from the progressive scan issues, the player is feature full, and produces extremely nice interlaced pictures... Minus progressive output, the price is too high. You can get the same quality interlace for half the price.

Strength:

Everything

Weakness:

Nothing

First of all, when I say "everything" and "nothing" under strengths / weaknesses, I mean it. A pro-scan DVD player for $200 (discounted price as I purchased it at the same time I purchased the Sony-KD34xbr2 + stand and cables -- total for everything after tax and delivery was $4300) can't be beat, but when I opened the box I was amazed. Easy set-up took less than 3 minutes *without* even looking at the instruction manual. The power button is sweet -- turn it on once, and that is the last time you will ever touch it. The remote is cool, and batteries are included. The sound is, well, amazing. I don't even have a sound system connected -- just the built-in tv speakers, but when watching a good dvd the sound is an experience all in itself. As for the picture quality ... I have never seen anything better. And I mean that. This is a better dvd player than what was offered 2 years ago for $1200. When watching a well-sourced dvd on a HD screen (Seven Platinum Series / FF:TGW Special Edition/ Fifth Element Special Edition / Pitch Black Special Edition) you feel like you are at the movies, minus the crying baby and the $5 soda.

I agree with the other people who said those talking about a green tint need to bone up on what causes what -- cause it ain't the dvd player.

I FIRST STARTED OUT WITH THE SONY DVP S560D DVD PLAYER WITH THE BUILT IN DOLBY DIGITAL DECODER AND LIKE OTERS I WAS NOT HAPPY WITH IT BUT IT WAS A START TO MY DVD EXPERIENCE. I THEN STARTED SHOPPING AROUND FOR ANOTHER SONY DVD PLAYER WHEN I SAW THIS MODEL. I WAS HOOKED INSTANTLY! THE SILVER APPEARANCE LOOKED AWSOME AND I INQUIRED FUTHER ABOUT THIS MODEL. THE STORE CLERK PLAYED A MOVIE ON THIS PLAYER AND THAT WAS ALL SHE WROTE AND IT WAS MINE. I PAYED 300.00 AND I FEEL THAT IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. RIGHT NOW ITS HOOKED UP TO A REGULAR FLOOR MODEL TV BUT I DO PLAN ON AN UPGRADE TO A PROSCAN HD TV AND THE SALES CLERK SAID THIS DVD PLAYER WILL LIVE UP TO MY EXPECTATIONS EVEN MORE THAN IT ALREADY HAS. IT WAS EASY TO HOOK UP AND THE MANUAL WAS EASY TO READ.IN MY OPINION SONY HAS OUT DID THEMSELFS WITH THIS PLAYER. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLAYER TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE BECAUSE IT TRULEY DELIVERS THE DVD MOVIE EXPERIENCE. GO OUT AND GET ONE ASAP BECAUSE IN MY TOWN THEY SELL OUT QUICKLY.

Strength:

Easy setup menu, good progressive scan, looks nice, plays cdr and cdrw cd's.

Weakness:

Nothing.

When my family bought a Mitsubishi HDTV, we started to think about upgrading to a progressive scan dvd player. We looked around places like Best Buy, Tweeter, and Circuit City, but no new models came out yet. So then we waited for two months and then the models came up. There were only few selections. Panasonic, Sony, and JVC. But we started to think about if theres any big defference between the three. So then we went to tweeter and asked some questions. They told us that it doesnt matter which one you buy but the sony and the jvc are a good bargain. By that time we had the jvc in the left hand and the sony on the right hand. Then we chose, we already have a sony es reciever so it would be easier and best to pick the sony.
The sony NS700P was very easy to set up. I went to the menu and it had an automatic setup (which is a very simple and nice feature). The picture looks great now and we are all happy. The NS700P is a great dvd player with a great bargain. I wouldnt mind if everyone owned this great player.
