Strength:

Once you get the Green tinge removed, excellent picture

Weakness:

that annoying off button, remote tv/dvd only and not backlit

I am amazed, using this with a Sanyo X21 Projector against a 120 inch white wall - no screen. Was going to save up for a projector screen - don't think I will bother spending the extra $1000 now. More money to spend on upgrading my speakers.

The picture is almost perfect, I have less noticable artifacting than a friend of mine has with a 47inch widesreen back projector and the 51 Panasonic model. I am glad I paid the extra $70 for the Sony.

Good write up from reviewer below - once you manually adjust within the DVD menu for the high green levels this unit rocks.

Buying an Outlaw reciever today to wire to - will give update once recieved.

Not using for Music DVD's

Remote is so so - looks like I now have to have 4 remotes on the coffee table. Why is it so hard to get a good laid out remote with a product

Progressive Scan Output, Style, Speed, Remote

Weakness:

The worst power button in the world

I purchased the DVP-NS700p primarily because of the component video out and progressive scan capabilities. I am very pleased with video from the unit. (Visually, there is no better opening scene in 480p than Toy Story 2). I have had none of the problems other reviewers list. I am left wondering what Sony was thinking when they designed the power button on this unit though. If the button is turned off, you cannot turn the unit on with the remote. If the button is on, however you can turn the unit on or off with the remote. Wierd.

The price for me ($349) was a bit hard to swallow, but I braved it and am completely glad I did. I have seen it recently in NYC for as low as $279.

Overall, this is a fantastic DVD player that will surely satisfy even those of you with sick TV's. I have a 32" Sony XBR 450, and it is a match made in heaven.

Strength:

Picture quality

Weakness:

Horrible front panal

This is my 3rd DVD player and by far the best- previously owned 1st gen RCA and stepped up to Pioneer with Component. I have this hooked up to widescreen Toshiba TW40X81 and the picture on the best DVD's is great. Some scenes from 'The Green Mile' and 'The Patriot' look almost high-def. There has hardly been a bad word written about this player in various Home Entertainment mags and I'm surprised by some of the problems people are writing about here- hook it up correctly and dial in all the settings and you'll be ok.
he major complaint I have about this player are the stone age clunky front panel buttons and the fact that you can't put player in standby via front panel on/off button- once you hit this button you can't use remote to turn player back on!! Thats just stupid and annoying.
Sound quality on movies is great too. I reckon this player is worth about $250-
Another thing I don't like is the silver color- I'm sure the majority of us have black components in our racks so something silver looks out of place.
This is a nice player if you have a high def widescreen display or plan to upgrade to one in future.
I have not had one problem with this player and love it for the price you simply can't go wrong.

Strength:

stylish looking

Weakness:

haven't used it enough to determine

I just got this the other day with a Sony KV-32HS20 TV.
I haven't read the manual fully yet but used the quick setup and the cheap cables that came with it. The sony tv
is hdtv ready, using the cables supplied and Rob Roy dvd I
started to play the movie. It played back in wide angle,
letterbox size but when I turned on the 16:9 enhancement
mode the vertical shrunk more. It looked like the people
in the movie were shrunk sort of. I wish I bought a wide-screen tv, it's like watching a movie thru a 5" vertical
band horizontally across the tv.
If anyone else has this type of tv or noticed
a similar affect let me know!! I don't know if what I saw
is correct or not. Thanks Gary

Strength:

Nice picture

Weakness:

Usual Sony sound, poor...............

I am one of those people who really wanted a Music first/DVD second player. I also wanted a 5 disc changer, but I could not find 1 on the entire market that was able to utilize the random play function for all five discs.......With all the technology available, you cannot ad this function on your changers? When I played a music disc on this unit, and played a music disc on my HK with a MSB Link!!!, there was no comparison. The Sony sounded terrible! However, I bought it for the DVD aspect of the machine, and I am very happy with the picture! It has a 12bitcapable processor for video, and I find the picture outstanding on my 32" Wega-If someone is looking for a great audio DVD player, the only good one I could find was NAD-it was on sale thru this site for 349.00. I cannot comment on comparison of other DVD players or pictures, I just got a good deal on it. I hope other DVD players sound better than this however, the sound was 2-dimensional with poor bass and poorer treble.

Strength:

Full-featured, progressive scan

Weakness:

Somewhat over-priced

I needed to buy a DVD player and it had to be a Sony (to match my other compoents). I purchased this model because it had all the major features plus entry-level progressive scan for future use. If you are looking for comments on its progressive scan capability you'll find none in this review since I don't have a DTV yet.

I have used this model for a while now. Oddly enough, I am not enthusiastic about it at all. It merely met my expectations and nothing more. In fact, I feel that it should be sold for $250 or less. Almost all of its features can be found on models in that price range.

The only feature I have found of benefit is the BNR. While most people feel that this is a B.S. feature, I am one of the few (perhaps the only one) who have actually observed it in action. The secret to BNR is that it only works on poorly encoded DVDs, particularly those with < 2Mbit/s data streams. If you are expecting it to work on any mainstream Hollywood DVD you will be sorely disappointed. However, if you watch lots of 2nd-rate DVDs, particulary the kind involving large compilations of adult material, you will be glad to have this feature. It definately reduces the artifiacts which are prevalent in low-bitrate encodings.

Other than BNR, the other features perform as expected and most can be found in Sony's own lower-cost models. Basically I own and use this model because it's mine, that's neither praise nor fault but simple honesty. If I had bought a lower priced model I would probably not miss the 700P.

480p

Weakness:

None, not at this price

Probably the best DVD player under $500. I have the 9000ES and the picture looks the same as the NS700. The 9000es is great for both Audio (SACD, Superior DAC's) and video, the 700 was designed to be used a video DVD player only, the audio (CD) section is just OK but not great. If you are looking for a Progressive Scan DVD player to hook up to your HDTV, and watch movies, look no further, this player rocks. If you are looking for a one box solution to all your audio and video needs, go for the 9000es, but for $250 the NS700 can't be beat!!

Strength:

Great price for a Progressive Scan. Looks great.

Weakness:

No MP3 player...but besides that, none.

This DVD player looks great and works like a dream. Going chapter to chapter is smoother than glass. I have only had a jitter in the image twice, once while watching Ronin and another time while viewing Episode I. Very easy to operate. Super nice controls on the actual player. The tray movement is nice and smooth. All the inputs and outputs on the back are well placed. This Progressive Scan 480P is a great deal and a very nice addition to your home theatre set-up.

Jimmy
