Excellent Unit!. I'm currently usig the S-Video conector on a 53" Sony big screen projectin TV. Picture quality is superb with no color leaks/blends on the edges. I also tested the DVP-500 with component video on my TV set and didn't noticed any major diferences in video quality when compared to the 300S. One drawback is the design of the remote, it is extremely big and ackwardly designed, making it very hard to use in a dark room, where most of us like to enjoy movies (I mostly depend on an universal backlit remote. The DVP-S300 has excellent features and it's a superb buy in the $300-350 price range.

Strength:

Great picture quality, easy setup, powerful and easy to use remote, quick setup.

Weakness:

No jog shuttle on remote

The 300 is my first DVD player and it has far exceeded my expectations. My friends bought similarly priced products from other manufacturers that have not measured up to the 300.

The picture quality is by far the best feature of this player. I can't really speak fo rthe sound because I'm feeding the audio into a Yamaha mini system that only supports Doly 2.0 surround.

The remote is easy to use and can control your TV as well, but is a bit large.

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound.

Weakness:

No componenet outputs, bulky remote.

I have used this Sony model for over a year and very pleased with my purchase. I have never experienced any lip-synching problems or difficulties getting the player to play a disc. Excellent quality for the price paid.

Strength:

Everything you need, built like a tank, perfect working order after 4 years.

Weakness:

If you are picky, by today's standards, the lack of component out and no DTS. I don't care about either.

If you see one for sale, grab it. I saw one go for $103 on Ebay. I should have gotten it for the bedroom or something just to have it.

Strength:

Great reliability. Made in Japan. Excellent remote. Sony's engineering.

Weakness:

No DTS, but who cares. No component video output or progressive scan.

I bought this player back in December of 1998 when companies were still trying to get DVD off the ground. I lucked out after purchasing the Panasonic model that wouldn't play my CD-Rs (not dual laser). I took it back, argued with management and got the Sony for the same price as the Panasonic at the time - $300, which included 5 free DVDs and 12 rentals from Hollywood Video. They made a mistake and sent double of both - 10 DVDs and 24 rentals - what a deal!

I've been using the S300 for almost three years now and it has performed flawlessly. I was pleased to notice recently that it was actually manufactured in Japan, not Malayasia or China like the new ones. No problems to speak of, just wish it had component video outputs, but the S-Video combined with an optical output to a Dolby Digital receiver is great! No regrets on this one!

Strength:

Dual laser, plays CDRs, bulletproof

Weakness:

Doesn't decode DTS, no digital coax out (optical only)

I bought this player as an open box special in Oct. of 1998 as my first DVD player, and have played hundreds of DVDs and CDs in it since then. For that time, the price was reasonable (I think MSRP was around $400) I can count on one hand the number of times I have any skips or problems with DVDs (and these were rentals). As stated in the other reviews, it will play just about anything, including CDRs. I've also played the old "flipper" as well as the new disks without problems. The only real incompatibility was with the new "Abyss" Special Edition. I had trouble with the menus, but could still play the movie.

I didn't realize at the time what a great benefit it is to have the dual lasers, esp. for audio quality, if you want to use it as your CD player. You really don't need a separate CD player to achieve good auidio quality.

No it doesn't have a built-in decoder, coax digital out, component out, or progressive scan. But I can't use any of those features (except DTS) with my current system anyway. I have it connected using the optical to my Outlaw 1050 receiver and it sounds great in DD or stereo.

This unit is solid IMO and if you can find a deal on a used one, I highly recommend it, if you don't need all the latest features.

Looking at the latest players, I question whether some measure up to this model in terms of quality and durability.
I have been considering a getting a new player with more features that supports DTS and DVD-A. I'll be keeping my Sony for use in the bedroom (and as as a backup!)

I just bought the DVP-S300 from Hifi Buys in open box condition. I got a great deal on it because it was missing the remote but I can live with it. I know it is possible to get the DVD player for $330.00 USD or less on the internet so do not pay $400.00-500.00 for the player from a retail store. Once you see the picture quality of a DVD player verses a standard VHS tape, you will ask yourself: "what was a watching before." I think the DVP-S300 is a great deal on both quality and price.

I just bought the Sony DVP-S300 open box from Hifi Buys. I got a great deal for it since it did not come with a remote but I can alwasy obtain one later. The products would have been a steal if it came with a remote. The DVD player is in great shape with no scratches, dents, or any other defects. I know it is possible to get the DVD player new for $320.00 USD or less on the internet. Do not pay $400.00-500.00 USD for the unit from a retail store. Once you see the picture quality of the DVD verses a standard VHS, you will ask yourself the same questions: "what was I doing before." I think that the unit is great for the quality is has and price I paid.

This is an excellent value/best buy for a DVD player.I purchased it from "Crutchfield".(They have the best
customer sevice. Highly recommend these guy's.) The
picture the DVP-S300 produce's is great. The movie
"Platoon" looked fantastic. The remote control isnt
the best ergonomic design. The "Display"button is
right next to the "Power". Will anybody ever get the
ergonomic's done right on remote control's? The rest
of my system consist's of: "Sony KV-32V40" 32in. TV,
"Yamaha R-V1105" Dolby Digital Receiver,"Cerwin-Vega
DX-9" left and right front speaker's,"Cerwin-Vega
E-D6C" center channel speaker, and "Bose Model 100"
for the rear surround speaker's.The "Sony DVP-S300"
look's and sound's great with this set up.Next add on
will probably be a "Cerwin-Vega Sub-150" sub-woofer.
Ah! The spoil's of life!
