I bought the pioneer dv333 and discovered that it had a very loud tray noise while playing. I returned it and bought the sony. Wow! Just unpacking it you can tell it is a much higher quality player. The pioneer is light and cheaply made.

The picture is perfect and no tray noise. Easy to use remote and fast menu tracking. For $250 this is the best player out there.

I have been very satisfied with this player. The picture is not soft if you use a component video hookup. It is excellent. A great buy!

Strength:

Terrific image, petite box, component outputs

Weakness:

Doesn't make popcorn or pour cocktails

This is my first DVD player and I am very satisfied. Yes, I could have bought something cheaper, but I have had mostly good luck with Sony over the years. Terrific image and sound quality, non-distracting display, and you don't have to rewind those DVD's!

Strength:

Everything that everybody else has already said - including (contrary to what one reviewer reported) the ability to dim the display. RTFM! I generally sit about 4 feet away from the player when I am watching my DVD's and HAVE NOT noticed any whirring noises! Are my ears bad, or is this a problem only with some players?! The VES sound feature is very nice. I do not notice the softness that many people speak of. I am very satisfied with this player. I read lots of reviews before I bought this player and I also went to several stores and checked out what they had to offer - consider myself an informed buyer. I have played about 75 DVD's on this player and have had no glitches. When I tried to get to the 3rd version of Terminator 2 (Ultimate Edition DVD) I noticed that the 2 separate enter buttons on the remote actually do have somewhat different functions. For those who know of the 3rd cut of T2 and the fact that you are supposed to enter a certain set of numbers and hit the enter key - the enter key on the bottom half of the remote will not get you to the Easter Egg - but the enter key in the upper part of the remote DOES have the desired effect.

Weakness:

Lack of some kind of backlighting on the remote.

In my humble opinion this is a hack of a lot of player for the money. As many people point out - it does not play CD-R's - Sony did that on purpose, but the audio on non-pirated CD's is BETTER than on my CD Player.

I had previously posted a review and it still hold true months later. this player has been flawless. Also, disregard people's complaints who report problems with a 1 second pause during most movies. It's called a layer change and happens on ALL DVD PLAYERS when a dual layer disc is played. Some players change a bit quicker than the sony but it's no more than a second or so.

Strength:

No jaggies on anamorphic titles. Good remote.

Weakness:

Too soft a picture - Not sharp at all. Dull Colors. Jumpy picture. Grainy. Distorted high end on movies and CDs.

I read the reviews here and decided to go with this unit because of the "no jaggies." Looks like there is too much of a tradeoff, however, with the picture sharpness. It is entirely too soft, and doesn't look any better than a high quality VHS. Doing some A-B comparisons with an Onkyo 535 proved this is a substandard performer. I'll take the jaggies... picture was too soft to even justify owning a DVD player.

On top of all this, the sound is horrible. No bass "kick" and the top end is audibly distorted - to the point of ruining the listening experience. No just on Audio CDs, as some have pointed out, but during the movies also. This was unacceptable for me.

Too bad the NAD t550 had so many problems, as I've not been able to find a player that satifies me on both sound and audio. However - this one fails in both respects. Real bottom of the line stuff. I'll be keeping the Onkyo 535 for now - and buy another CD player later (NAD or Rotel). I miss my Sony ES CD player! (R.I.P.)

Strength:

Fast loading and disc access, sleek look.

Weakness:

Whirring noise when the disc spins but I can't hear it enclosed in my entertainment cabinet.

Excellent price, alot of connections for the price. Does have a softer picture which I think is better because it reduces jaggies. Sony reliability, I highly recommend it.

Strength:

price?

Weakness:

Loud mechanism that spins the DVD, no cdr playback ability.

Don't buy this player. Spend more money, or buy another brand. The picture quality is OK, but the player is extremely loud. You can hear the dvd spinning while watching the movies, and it will not play cdr's wich makes it almost useless for playing music to me.

Strength:

For the price, it's ok...but if you want to make your money count, go for the Toshiba SD-1200 or wait until Oct. 26 and pick up a PS2. They're debuting at $300...hey, for $50 you can enjoy great video games in addition to DVDs, CDs, CDRs and CDRWs (if you wanna adjust the pots on the laser).

Weakness:

I find that the picture quality with S-Video lack sufficient contrast. This causes the picture to look washed out, dull and lifeless. It's not my TV -- both the PS2 and SD-1200 produce better color, and overall picture quality. Since I believe picture quality to be about 90% of what matters in a DVD player, my rating will reflect that.

I've had the opportunity to play my favorite DVDs -- Romeo Must Die and Fight Club -- on several DVD players. The first player I used was Sony's new Playstation 2. For a unit that is not designed specifically to play DVDs, I'd say the PS2 has very good quality. In fact, it is superior to the S360 in picture quality -- so the PS2 has quality that rivals some of the better DVD players on the market.

The Toshiba SD-1200 was about the same as the PS2 in picture quality, however, it had fewer visible artifacts on dark scenes of the movie than the PS2 does. What I can say about the S360 is that it is quick to access menus and seek the disc. I guess sony slapped a faster DVD drive into this one. The remote is nice, but could use some illumination.

Strength:

Easy access remote. quick startup of movie chapters. Menu access on front panel. Sound and video.

Weakness:

no jog shuttle.

This is my first DVD player. However, I have seen and researched other models. The sound and picture are what you would expect it to be from most dvd players. One of the aspects I like most about this player is the quick access to any part of the dvd that is being played. It starts up flawlessly every time. The unit is very responsive to the remote. The fast forward, rewind and slow motion is most impressive. It provides a smooth motion through every part of the picture. Contrary to what I read in another post, you can access chapters directly from the number keypad. The final decision to buy this model rested on the purchase price. I bought mine for $200 on mercata. Check them out! I received my player extremely fast. Their customer service is also top notch. Anyways, happy hunting!
