She had major tracking problems! Stopping. Pausing. Continuing somewhere else. Reading the movie chapters out of sequence. Re-starting the movie from the beginning. I haven't yet had the C:13 Error but I think she's on her last leg. I'll talk with a Priest and have her read her last rights, after which I'll promptly feed this unit to the dog...

I calibrated my unit this past weekend, as per Jim the Audiophile from Georgia's review below (10/27/01).

Interestingly, in the Calibration Menu they have a topic entitled "Emergency Info" which tracks the hours the DVD spends reading DVDs, CDs, et al.

I was surprised that there wasn't a countdown to your units demise.

Phew... made it through this without swearing.

This is my followup to my post of earlier today. A previous poster mentioned recalibrating the DVD player following the instructions posted at

www.members.accessus.net/~090/awh/sonydvd.html

As a final desparate act I recalibrated the DVD player pursuant to those instructions (be sure to press the Title, Clear and Power buttons on the DVD remote sequentially) and calibrated a single layer DVD, a rented DVD from Netflix that was getting the c13:00 error. The process was self-explanatory and took about a minute. I did not have a double-layer DVD to calibrate. After completing the single-layer DVD calibration, I exited the calibration program and tried to play that same DVD. IT WORKED! The DVD immediately loaded and played with no difficulty.

Does recalibration fix/solve the error problems that have plagued so many owners of the DVP-S360? Have any other posters had similar success? Does the apparent fix last?

Checked with my attorney, not a lot of interest in a class action lawsuit due to the low value of the units (no kidding!!!) He suggested I file a suit locally just to be a pest. I decided to escalate to the Pres. Of Sony Electronics USA instead. Got a call with another offer of 50% off the $135 repair bill on THEIR LEMON!!! I told the nice man to to tell the Pres. that this DVD player was my last Sony purchase ever! Not to mention the 10 people I will tell to follow suit!!! (Gee, do you think that more than 10 people will listen?!?!?!) NEVER BUY SONY!!!

Three years ago I invested in a entry model RCA DVD player that slowly over the course of a year died. I'll never buy an RCA product again. Well, I thought, enough of the POS let's buy a good one. Sony had a good rep and according to the intial reviews is was a fine machine so I bought one. Two months ago it began to go haywire. No amount of recalibrating could get it to function and finally it seemingly also grew weary of the process and just refused to calibrate at all anymore.

I do think a class action lawsuit is in order. Somebody mention a variation on the calibrating but didn't explain well . Anyone else know how to do it differently?

Strength:

Remote is above average, fast disc loading

Weakness:

Soft picture IF you use RCA outputs. Even though in the menu you can disable the auto-start, it seems to ignore the 'off' setting.

I was reluctant to get a Sony because of their bad repair history, but they were out of the Pioneer model I wanted, so I thought I'd give it a shot for 2 weeks.
So far, so good. These reviews are correct when they say it has a 'soft' picture when hooked up by RCA cables. When I got my Monster Cable S-Video cable back from a friend, it solved the problem. The picture is very detailed and the colors don't get washed out quite as bad as before. The sound seems very precise, but that should almost be a given for any DVD player now days.
I'm very happy with how quiet it is during normal play. My old Toshiba was pretty bad when it came to that.
The virtual surround feature is pretty useless. It works good most of the time, but there are some scenes where voices are put in surround, and shouldn't be.
I can't really say that the $240 I paid was a bargain, but it's not too bad.
All in all, it's not a bad low-priced player. You might want to look into an extended warranty though, because after all it's a Sony.

Strength:

Small, compact size. Well-built unit, fast loading

Weakness:

None that I've noticed so far!

As I said, this is my first DVD player. With that said, however, my wife and I are VERY happy with this player and we're glad that we made the jump from VHS to DVD. I went back and forth between the Pioneer DV-333 and this Sony 360 and finally settled on the Sony.

We have put 5 different movies through this player (Gone in 60 Seconds, The Santa Clause, A Christmas Story, Snow Day, and The Replacements) as well as one CD (RUSH, Fly By Night). With the first four movies and the CD, we had no problems with disc-spinning noise. However, with The Replacements (which was a rented disc from a video store), we did hear a noise as the disc was playing. Not sure if the noise had anything to do with it being a rented disc, but since that was the only one to do it so far, it seems fairly likely.

As for layer flipping and pausing, the only movie that gave us a slight (probably less than a second) pause was Gone in 60. And that came at the end of one scene and at the beginning of another so that it was very unobtrusive to the enjoyment of the film.

I would definitely recommend this player for anyone looking to get into DVD!

Strength:

Have not used except store displays.

Weakness:

It might have a very small weakness in sound compared to the Onkyo, which i think there is slight difference in price between the two. The Sony does not have a zoom feature, but the Onkyo does. I like the sound of the zoom feature.

The truth is I don't have the product yet, but I do know that Sony is a very reliable Product. Never had a moments problem with them. I am however trying to decide the Sony and the Onkyo DV-S535, of which I have been told has a much better audio sound for playing cd's. However it is not being bought for cd's, it will mainly be used for DVD's. Highly recommend Sony in any case.

Strength:

nice remote compared to other low price players.

Weakness:

very soft picture.

Purchased the sony 360 last week as and compared it to my pioneer 525 hooked up to a RPTV 53 sony 53hs10 digital ready setup. The sony was had a nice picture but had a clearly softer picture as compared to my old pioneer. There have been many comments posted in the past on this issue. Both DVD's were hooked up via componet cables to my 53 inch RPTV. Sorry to say, I returned the sony and purchased pioneer's model 333 which is an updated version of my old 525 player. Overall the sony is a nice product but for those looking for sharp pictures especially if you are using a large screen set......the pioneer may be a better choice
