Strength:

Its looks

Weakness:

Reliability, Warranty

My Sony DVP-S360 recently failed after 8 months of normal use (playing 1-2 DVDs per week average). The player now starts up in "standby" and the drive tray would not open. "SONY DVD" comes up whenever the eject button is depressed. This product has a 90-day labor and 1-year parts warranty. Since the breakdown occured after the labor warranty expired, Sony now wants $138.56 in labor costs to repair it. I am now debating whether it is economically feasible to repair the drive or chuck it out and buy a new one.

Welcome to the club! If any one is planning some type of action against Sony for this model, PLEASE include me.
We got ours for Christmas last year, used it about twice a month through July, then got the NO DISC error. Called Sony and got a "this is customer service, and we aren't able to allow any changes to the warranty" answer. They recommended I send in the unit to their repair facility (they DID supply the address for me) with a note stating the number of statements found here, and that the repair/warranty area may consider changing the warranty upon further research.
Yeah - I'm going to send in my unit and hope they change the warranty. For some reason, I don't think they would, and then they would also have my unit.
I can't believe the number of additional responses here just since July! I'm sure Sony doesn't know (is ignoring)anything about this being a bad product...

Same C13 problem. I logged a verbal complaint with Sony and indicated that it would be easy to file a class action law suit against them with all of my friends here if I did not get a no charge replacement or repair. Got a return number and thought I was set. Mailed off the player along with printouts from our site here citing all the C13 problems. Just received a bill for $135 for the repair of my player. Anyone interested in filing suit??? I will call tomorrow and attempt to escalate, but given the results you all have shared, seems a lawyer might be the only one who can get their attention!

Strength:

Nice remote, nice look/feel

Weakness:

Doesn't work any more

Add me to the list of disgruntled ex-Sony advocates. Same problem as everyone else - the dreaded C13 error after 9-10 months of light use. After reading these postings, I won't even bother with getting a estimate to fix. I also have a Sony 41" projection "Big Screen TV" that has cost me over $300 in repairs in the 3 years that I have had it - both times for the exact same electronic components that blew, probably due to overtemp/overstress. I am just waiting for these to blow again. I will never buy another Sony product again.

Strength:

Great - up to the point that it decides to give out, which is right around 1 year!!

Weakness:

C:13 errors, occassional audio/video mismatch, freezes while playing and often skips DVD chapters

At first, I thought it was just a bad one off the production line. Now after reading the other posts, I couldn't believe my eyes as I read that everyone else is having the same problems. Some people say that Sony is giving discounts on repairs - I think they should repair or even replace these defective units for free!! We're not talking about random parts that give out normally with most electonics, this is obviously a major defect and bad engineering on Sony's part! I will definitely not buy another Sony product if they do not repair or replace my unit - for FREE!
I encourage everyone to send this URL link to Sony online support. Maybe we can get them to honor their so-called quality and craftsmanship by recalling these DEFECTIVE units.

Robb let us all know what you find out. Sony should reimburse everyone who has had problems. My player lasted 5-6 months and now will not recognize any CDs or DVDs. I too tried the recalibration through the service menu, but it would read error with every attempt to recalibrate. Do not buy anything from Sony.
