Good product.
Compared with Toshiba 2109, Pioneer 414, and Panasonic 120.

I like the picture quality the best and also the features it had. The others had nice features too, but when it came down to picture and build quality, Sony was the best in the price range.

I did notice lip-sync problem couple of time in 3 months of regualr use. I just stop and resume play and it corrects itself.

Strength:

picture quality, audio quality, relative build quality

Weakness:

none, so far

I've had this player for about 3 weeks, and so far, WOW! I waited for Sony to resolve the lip-sync problems before I purchased. When I hooked it up to my Sony 32" TV, I thought it looked good, but nothing really great, but every time I watched a DVD over the next few days, I was more and more impressed. It makes my laserdisc player's picture look like a VHS tape. But of course everything is relative, as a HDTV makes the DVD picture look bad by comparison. I haven't seen 2001 look this good since I saw it in '68 at a theater.
The sound from DVDs is extremely smooth, while still being detailed. CDs played on the 530 sound as good as on my $450 CD player.
I've watched 20 DVDs and haven't seen a trace of the lip-synch problem and had no problems whatsover.
I give it a 5, and if you factor in the price, it deserves a 6.

none whatsoever

I bought this player in combination with a Sony STR SE491 reciever and a little 6 piece Sony speaker system. So far this DVD player has been perfect. The picture is excellent with the RCA out, and the Dolby Digital sound is amazing! I strongly recommend this model as long as you buy a fairly recent one.

Hi Everyone! I see my post on the serial numbers for the 530D has helped, but I have been receiving email concerning some of the numbers and where to find the serial number on the box. I did miss a couple of zeros on the first post, so here is the update and more info:

SONY 530D

SERIAL NUMBERS To AVOID: 0100001 - 0119840
0800001 - 0953000

You can find the serial number on the outside of the box by locating a barcode sticker on the side of the box (usually). At the bottom of the barcode itself will be a number that starts with S01#######. The Number following the S01 will be the serial number on the back of the unit. This is also the bar code label that must be sent in to cliam the 5 free cds. To find a MANF DATE, look on top of the bax, there should be a label with a bar code and a date at the botton like: 11/12/99. This should be the date it ws shipped from the warehouse. Hope this clears things up and makes everyones DVD Xmas a Happy One. So far I have not experience any problems with my player. I had problems with a JVC playing ARMAGEDDON, but the Sony has been GREAT!

Weakness:

None so far

I absolutely love my 530-D. I've heard rumors of lip-sync problems, but I've yet to experience any. The menus are great, the remote is easy, and the picture and sound quality are second to none in this class. I can't say this is as good as Sony's higher-end models, but for the price, you can't beat it.

Strength:

Excellent picture, good menus.

Weakness:

Some lip sync problems.

Great player - I have only experienced lip sync problems a few times in over 6 months. I'm debating whether or not to have the firmware upgraded, though.

Dan - How to enter the service mode:

With power off, press TITLE then CLEAR then POWER.
I think menu option #5 will tell you what firmware you have, I believe it's the SYSCON number. Also, check out menu option #4 - interesting, tells you laser hours for CD and DVD.

well the one i got is in the 135,000 range far serial numbers ,firmware version 2.21 this has got to be the BEST dvd player on the market today!I highly recommed it to all.I have it connected to a yanaha r-v1105 so im not useing the onboard decoder but wanyed this unit for the composite video outputs, this model is sony`s cheapest player with this option,if you dont require this or a internal decoder the dvp330s would be another great choice.I have played 6 movies all the way through and have put this sony through it`s paces all it`s all working perfectly, sony seems to have fixed all the bug`s.I previewed all the model`s from 199 to 799 and for the price this has to be yhe best choice.. good hunting
