Strength:

internal DD decoder (5.1)
slim line
digital video enhancer
easy to use menu

Weakness:

no CDR/CDRW
no internal DTS decoder (5.1)
no zoom function

I have a 5.1 ready amplifier, so I needed a DVD player with a built in decoder.
I wanted to buy the 525, but it had just been replaced with the 535.
The internal 5.1 DD decoder sounds fine, much better than regular dolby surround.
I played about 30 DVD´s on it (including the Matrix), and no problems so far...

Strength:

- Built in AC-3 Decoder
- Easy to use

Weakness:

- Struggles with some scratched DVDs
- Hard to make Multiregion

I have had this player now for about 14 months and have played quite a lot of discs on it. I have had some problems with movies that I have rented from Blockbuster, which were scratched (what do you expect from Blockbuster?), the picture will skip or jump chapters. Otherwise on the whole its good. I have this hooked up to a Yamaha RX-V592RDS Reciever (using the 6ch output), a pair of Eltax Century 200 front speakers and two pairs of JBL Control 1G's for centre and surround. My neighbours tend to complain when I turn it up more than 30%!

Strength:

Great sound/Pic quality, easy to use, plenty of features, very slim + compact...

Weakness:

build quiality-feels a bit thin,s-video lead supplied is CRAP, nothing else.

I was going to go for a more expensive player (dvp-735) but after some carefull consideration decided that it wasnt worth the extra money... .This player is great...no probs at all ... there are plenty of features to keep even the most dmanding of us happy !! .. I plan to use this as the base for my system... music quality is also top !! This is suitable for those who want a class player at a very resonable price. I cant find fqault other than I think the build quality feels a bit thin... although for the money what can I expect !! Any queries please contact me !!!

Strength:

Great picture and video enhancement for the time the laser lasts. SONY will repair your player for more than you paid for it originally

Weakness:

You spend some extra time looking for a new DVD player

A very good player if you want a machine that will last just long enough for the warrantee to expire. My player's laser only lasted 700 hours, the nice thing is that this information is saved so you can estimate the cost per hour ($0.50/hour) after the player kicks the bucket. This is my second sony player. The first one (SONY 335) also suffered for SPD (sudden player death) syndrome as well. Of course the player comes with the patented SONY anti-consumer devices preventing region code switching and recording personal movies to tape.

Strength:

Good when working

Weakness:

Doesn't work

I've had my player for 14 months and about 3 months ago it started skipping, freezing and the dreaded C:13 (no disk) error. This player is certainly not immune to the problems of the S560D and similar players so don't think it won't happen. I've called Sony (New Zealand) and they've said they'll fix it even though it's out of warranty, but if it's only a temporary fix - what's the point.

It's time to start saving for a non-Sony DVD.

Strength:

Sound, Picture, blue light indicating disk in Dobly Digital

Weakness:

Doesn't like even slightly scratched disks tends to jump chapters even backwards. Doesn't support all types of media.

I like this player, looks good and has nice on screen menu system. No component video output though. No DTS either. Major drawback for me is it won't play back VCD's on CD-R only on CD-RW. Also won't play SVCD's .. but it doesn't claim to either. Overall I am happy with it playing DVD's but would give it more like a rating of 3.5 for overall functionality

Weakness:

no DTS decoder (but what can you expect at this price)
Won't take to damaged disc's

I had an order standing for this one because I heared that it would be a good player and Steenweg didn't sold me nothing. This Player is in my opinion The best there is at this price range. The Picture quality is stunning and the sound isn't less than that.

Another thing that amazed was was it's weight. It weights absolutly nothing while the construction is solid.

I had a doubt that it would beat the Pioneer player because that one is a very good player too. It's what brand you prefer in that matter.

The only downside I could really think off was that it doesn't like DVD's with some scratches. I don't know if they fixed that in later batches, but mine doesn't like damaged DVD's. Other DVD players seem to have less trouble with them.

A real winner for this price range.
