Strength:
Superb CD transport and player. OK i lnow this player is now over 20 years old but quality is still quality no matter how old right? Build quality is fabulous, oozes confidence in usership. Pride of ownership is excellent, that cool drop down front panel.......mmmmm. Ok i have not used this as a DVD player but as a CD transport into my Musical fidelity DAC and also tried it on its own as a stand alone player. WOW! This player is class all the way, a real sleeper as a CD player and transport. Smooooooth and very analogue like sound. I discovered a secret when using this as a CD player with its own dac, change the Audio filter settings! Go into the menu system and change the audio filter output from Sharp to slow. I havent the foggiest idea what this changes , it must be some kind of filter but the difference is major to my ears, on sharp setting it is still a mighty fine player but on slow setting the sound becomes smoother and more full, Sony describe it in their manual and "warm and deep" Anyway iam just hoping the laser lasts out a few years at least, if you can get one of these players on the cheap don't hesitate, buy it! BTW mine is a region1 USA player in black, looks real peachy! I have had Meridian 518.24, 588, Cambridge Audio CD3 , Sony 557ES and 707ES plus many more high end players and this things knocks all their socks off. Weakness:
Getting old now and lasers only last so long...... Price Paid: £70

Strength:
The front panel looks and feels like a premium set. The price too.
Weakness:
Just after 8 years of use it got busted. The Sony Service Center in Malaysia gave me a grin and said "Parts End, prease collect your player". Sony seems to be moving into mass production, with cheap sets that can not be service/repaired. Not in a million years will they ever stand shoulder to shoulder with the Europen sets.
It was a lovely set to have, designed that lasts even today. But like all other Japanese product, they are not meant to last. Just after 8 years of use it got busted. Customer Service Excellent lip service (in Malaysia). Similar Products Used: Cambridge Audio, Pioneer, Marantz, Yamaha. |

Strength:
Solid build, amazing pictures, excellent sound reproduction and lasting design.
Weakness:
For a product born in the year 2000, non that I can think off. I have had this machine for 7 years now. It has taken all the torture it can possibly take from my kids. And since then, it had never been to the workshop. The panel still slides up and down smoothly and the tray still works effortlessly. The design and tiny little buttons are still ahead of today's competition.
Customer Service Here in Malaysia is poor. I had a problem with the Amplifier of the same range, the technicians are fresh out of colledge and did no know the nature of the problem. They almost suggested me to toss the unit in the garbage bin and get a new one. Similar Products Used: Cambridge, Yamaha, Sony, Pioneer, |

Strength:
Excellent KHS-180A optical pickup.
Weakness:
Chroma upsampling error in video.
This is a very good-to-excellent DVD player. Video performance is actually a couple of notches lower than its predecessor: the DVP-S7000. this is primarily due to the fact that its LSI Logic MPEG2 decoder does have problems with chroma upsampling. Nowhere near as bad as the C-Cube ZiVA MPEG2 decoders found in players like the Samsung DVD-611, but it is there. However, there are still only a handful of players that properly upsamples the color anyway, such as the decoder found in the Panasonic DVD-RV30 (which remains one of the very best dvd players overall, even to this day).

can be turned off
Weakness:
turns on? I bought this player based on rave reviews on this site, but atlas, I will never buy another piece of equipment without first doing a in home test (which means buying from brick and mortar stores). I already have a great DVD player, btw, the Panasonic RP82, so I did not buy this machine for the DVD but rather red book audio CD. It just plain sucks. The Panasonic RP91 is even better than it at this respect. I am going to pick up a CA70ES at a local good guy tomorrow to test. In the mean time, this thing is going on Ebay to recover cost. |

Strength:
Built like a tank, but still looks great. Picture quality is unmatched, even with today's progressive scan players. Quiet as a mouse. Quick disc access. Best remote I've ever used.
Weakness:
CD's don't sound as good as they do in my CA70ES I bought the 7700 shortly after it was introduced in Canada, and at the time it was considered one of the best DVD players on the market. Almost 5 years and a lot of use later, I can still say this unit blows me away. Although it is not progressive scan, I am not convinced it needs to be. I have used many newer players that are progressive scan, and the picture quality is, at best, ALMOST as good as the 7700. I have had no mechanical problems. The flip down face still functions smoothly. I have never had any problems with sound or video related to the unit itself. If I have any complaint, it's that CD's don't sound as good as they do out of a high end optical CD player. I have no idea why. That aside, unless something really awful happens, I hope to have this player another 5 years. Sony really hit a home run with this one. Although I paid a lot of money, there is no doubt I got my money's worth. Similar Products Used: Nothing close to this |

Build, style, performance, ..not necessarily in that order.
Weakness:
Getting a little long in tooth, but that can be a plus as long as nothing gives out. Hasn't yet! I feel I was fortunate to aquire a nice, lightly used iteration of this player. Every bit, (no pun intended), as good as the 2nd, 3rd generation Sony's. The only thing I'm concerned about is the drawer seems to be a little sluggish withdrawing. Dual lasers, should have been ES,,, but you know how Sony is. I'll take it to my grave. Similar Products Used: s500d samsung crap - NEVER BUY SAMSUNG!!!! |

Strength:
Excellent cd playback and DVD video playback.Gorgeous look. High quality contrunction and components, ont of sony best
Weakness:
limited tweaking abilities, abit long in the tooth now Bought this machine 2 year ago to replace my budget Pioneer DVD. What a pleasant change it was. It is drop dead gorgeous, especially with the drop down front panel, has excellent pictures and great sound, including almost excellent CD playback. I am in the process of upgrading for a newer model with Prog scan, DVD-Audio and obviously SACD, but very few machines will machine the sony's look and cd playback. |
