Strength:

Plays CD and DVD exceptionaly fine , dependable no problems ,remote is very handy after you learn to use it. Also pays my CD-R very well.

Weakness:

Not progessive scan for DVD Audio

This unit works just fine for me and my family , used for aprox 1 year with no problems. took about 6 months to learn how to use the remote properly. I use it for music and my kids use it for movies. It work fine with my Sony XBR400 36" ,Pioneer VSX-36TX ,Adcom GFA-6000, Just need more power for my 7 Polk speakers RT2000,RT55,RT35 and CS400.

Just a review from the last one. It seems funny how one can get a lemon. I have had mine over a year and never have had a problem and it gets used-Everyday from the kids using it and I first used it playing alot of music until i got SCD-777ES SACD player. I think it stinks when one gets a problem unit and the company does't buck-up to take care of it-they think you have $1200 to go out and replace it with a new one. Anyways just my two bits.

Strength:

Good video quality. Was originally state of the art video quality.

Weakness:

Has spent more time in the shop than I have used it. Sound quality.

Be very cautious in buying one of these machines. I bought mine in 1999. 3 months after I bought it, it broke down and spent weeks in the shop. In January 2001, it broke down again and it has been in the shop since then (it's now May 2001). The parts are on backorder and it isn't expected to be fixed until June at the earliest. It seems to break down after about every 10 hours of use. I haven't watched all my DVDs. About every 5 viewings, it breaks down. The local repair shop says the problems I have been having are common with these units.

Sony has not responded to my letters.

If you are foolish enough to buy one of these units, MAKE SURE YOU BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH IT.

I've considered the Sony DVP-S7700 is a must buy DVD of the year.
I've killed many quality hours at local video shops and settled for the Sony DVP-S7700.
I'm not a Videophile and I do not own a WIDE SCREEN TV. But
having the Sony DVP-S7700 in my system is like upgraded a receiver to a quality intergrated amp.
I guessed some people just not lucky.
A bargain buy for $500.00

Had a chance to test this out and was very impressed. As usual, Sony has come up with an outstanding product. With DTS AND Dolby Digital, the 7700 is an outstanding piece.
In comparing it to the Denon DVD5000THX DVD/CD and the Pioneer Elite DVL-91 LD/DVD/CD, the 2 players I own, it is among the best. The sound and picture of the D5000 is better than the 7700. As far as CD goes, there is no comaprison. The D5000 is better. I find the gap pretty significant. Video too. The D5000 was significantly better. However, I find the 7700 to have about the same sound as my DVL-91 for both DVD and CD with a comparable picture. I could not hear or see any difference.

The 7700 is in thet upper tier of DVD/CD players for sure. My strong recommendation is that if you want the best for under $1800, go with the 7700. However, for the best overall DVD and CD performance for under $5500, the Denon D5000 is tops (it sells for a prettty high $2500). If I had the 7700 and not the D5000 Denon, I'd be very content. I just insist having the best I can afford to get.

The 7700 is a 5 star top notch product.

I didn't spend alot of time checking out DVD players so I can't compare it to others. I can compare it to the video we produce at my production company. The component out rocks! I purchased the Sony Vega 32" just for that reason. Component at home! The DAC for audio is great! I would buy it again. The sliding front panel is a nice touch also. I have it connected to a B&K ref20. Nice combo. Good remote...

I just recently purchased a 7700. The picture detail is just stunning, but probably not much better than units costing much less. What really peaked my interest in this unit was the antipcipation that the performance and build quality would be up to the level of my CDP XA7ES CD player. It isn't even close, but then again it is less than half the price of the XA7ES.
In any case, I am quite pleased with the performance of the unit. Yes, I could have spent less, but pride of ownership counts for something, and although I haven't seen a test report, maybe the DAC's will be close to those in the XA7ES.

no pluge, no 0 black level, no 24/94 digital, bad video convertion, too bad Sony cheaped out and didin't give us what was already on the 7000 and the new features Pioneer & Toshiba is putting on the players. Too much for too little.

I receantly purchased the dvps7000, and was very pleased with that unit. It had everything I was looking for in a dvd machine. I was then checking out sony's web site and looked up authorized dealers, just out of curiosity, i began calling the dealers in my area to see if in fact i got the best possible deal, since Bryn Mahr stereo claims to match any price. I found a dealer certified store, selling the dvps7700 for 899.00 while the store where I purchased the 7000 sold the 7700 for 1200.00. I called them up and asked them to match the price, they did not believe that the store that i found was dealer certified. So i now own the 7700, and i will be returning the 7000 and the store will be loosing my business.I do like the on-screen displays better on the 7000, they didn't stand out as much and didn't take away from the movie. But the 7700 is a much more advanced machine, with dts. Not that i believe it is going anywhere, but it is a bit more furure proof. Bottom line this machine is great. If you want a solid piece of uquipment this is the unit for you. It is made like a brick shit house. well thought out and great features..buy it.
