Strength:

Film-like picture quality, excellent sound, comprable, if not better, to many stand-alone CD players

Weakness:

Price, until now

You must get one of these while the price is so low. It used to retail for around $1200, now you can pick one up for about $500. This is a wonderful CD player that just happens to play DVD's. Its dual laser pick-up does double duty without scimping on either format. The perfect all-in-one unit.

Strength:

Separate lasers for DVD and CD disks for optimum tracking of each source; extremely quiet operation; easy setup; clear instructions; large remote with glow-in-the-dark buttons; clear on-screen menus; price-performance ratio;

Weakness:

none

This system was plug-and-play for me. If I had needed help, however, the instruction booklet comes with many pictures and diagrams.

I have a high-quality, basic audio-video stereo system, so I had no need for the frills of higher-end DVD players:

Kenwood KA-880SD integrated amplifier: 105-watt/channel into 8 ohms, 210-watt/channel into 4-ohms, 0.005% THD

Advent Speakers: 25 to 40K Hz, + or - 3 DB

27" ProScan TV with S-video input

On the above system, music CDs and DVDs play beautifully. I have not experienced a single problem with their playback.

Strength:

Nice-looking, quality build, great picture and sound!

DTS!

Weakness:

None that I can find.

Well, I am not going to repeat all the good thing that others have said about this unit; just wanted to add that now 7700 is the player of choice for an MSB upgrade.
It is a bit pricey, though: $1,395. For that they will upgrade the unit to handle eight different resolutions from 480p to 1200p. So, when those HD DVD disks start rolling out in about two years, this unit will be ready for them. One thing I don't know, however, is how they get away with using the original laser. I thought that for HD DVD material to be reproduced a player must have a different laser. Just some food for thought.

Strength:

Build quality. Great looks. Superb audio and video performance. Ease of operation.

Weakness:

None.

I have owned this player for 18 months and have never even thought about upgrading until now. Having looked around at what is available I find it impossible to replace without spending $1500 or more. This shows what a great player it is. It is faultless on video, plays cd's (inc cd-r's) with amazing clarity and is a joy to use. I believe that they can be had for around $500 now. My advice? get one whilst you still can!

CD Tray

After using it for 3 years now, I'd say is one heck of a machine. When I'm at work, my kids torture it will all kinds of cheap CD's & VCD's. Picture remained superb, sounds great and still working. With a small exception, the CD tray needs some oil.

Strength:

CD and DVD sound quality, excellent construction.

Weakness:

Menus and remote are more complicated than necessary.

Not having owned a DVD player previously, I don't feel qualified to comment on the picture quality... it looks excellent to me on my 27" Wega through the component outputs, but I don't know what I might be missing.

The reason I bought this player, and where it shines, is the audio quality. I listen to classical music and demand a lot from CD players. And I wanted to replace my CD player with a DVD player due to lack of space. Of all the DVD players I auditioned, this one and the S9000 were the only ones that even came close to my Sony ES CD player.

The unbelievable part: both of the high-end Sony players sound *better* playing audio CDs than any of my CD players have. But with the S7700 at $429 and the S9000 at $1500, there was no question of which to buy. Sound is clean, natural, noise-free and even throughout the frequency range.

I have not had any trouble playing CD-Rs (have not tried CD-RWs). I highly recommend this unit to anyone in search of a DVD player that *really* plays CDs.

This value rating is only if the player is under $500...

Strength:

Great picture, great sound, great build quality. What more can one ask for?

Weakness:

Nothing

This is one hell of a DVD player. Much muhch better than most of the players i've tried. And i could not understand what the reviewer below meant when he said that having no progressive scan for DVD audio. I mean , progressive scan for DVD Audio??????????? Hmm...i must be missing something here.
I dunno how ppl can find faults with this player saying that it doesn't play DVD Audio or is not a progressive scan player. The thing is this is not meant to be one such player! If you want progressive scan , buy something else. And you'll never find sony making a dvd audio player even if hell freezes over!
Over all this is a great player. No complaints whatsoever. Never missed out on reading any disc, no matter how scratched it was. I'm looking for sony to come out with a dvd player that plays SACD and CDRs...unlike the 9000ES. If it comes out, i'll be amongst the first to buy it.

I just got a real sweetheart deal on this thing, and I must say it works beautifully. I have not even played a cd yet but on movies it has a real film like quality (thru the component source) that I have not encountered before. A lot of people don't seem to like the front motorized door ,but I think it pretty cool besides it does serve a purpose. I have had six players since the format hit and this is by far the best player that I have owned. I did have a top of the line kenwood a couple of years ago (silver kenwood 2070 player has a drop down door as well, and this was a exellent unit.) but the sony blows that unit away. I have not had it very long but what I have seen its VERY NICE PLAYER. I have to listen to a cd since everyone says how good it sounds. If you can still get one buy it you wont be dissipointed.
