Strength:

For the price hard to beat quality, both music and picture

Weakness:

Not to fond of remote

There are so many good reviews of this unit that another one would just sound dull but im here to say that for a small investment this unit can sound a lot better.

I was e-mailed a month ago by a fellow audio reviewist saying that i had to chack out some products found at
(AudioNut.com) So i went to the sight and bought me one
power slab for $42 bucks and some Fast Points for $40 bucks
bothh bought for the soul purpose of cutting down vibrations in the sony 7700. We all know that weight is a major factor in removing vibrations that cut down on sound quality and these two purchases did the trick. Instantly sound quality jumped The high hats became real and the base a little more focused. I really heard a big difference and after an all down examination using 50 cds from classical to metallica i honestly have to say for a hundred buck you cant loose.

my set up:

two sony tan9000es amps (two hundred watts per channel)
sony tae 9000es ver 1.18 pre amp
sony dvp7700 player (illuminations coax cable a must)
A pair of jbl l300 speakers (older than myself)
Monster m2.2s speaker cables

products talked about can be found at Audionut.com
And no i dont work for them all though i wish i did

ps. check out ps audio power plant 300 as a line converter supposed to be awesome.!!!!

no five stars because The $12,000 wadia cd kicks sony's ass

Price...but

I would submit my thoughts but I would just reiterate all the great comments in the reviews before mine. I bought mine via this website (http://www.alphasound.com/htdocs/dvd.html) and was amazed at the price. I received this player in a sony box untouched. If you have the cash buy this DVD player today!

Strength:

Finish and build quality, smoothness of transport, video quality, plenty of hookups, great CD transport

Weakness:

No HDCD decoding? Lacks some features of the new models, No 24/96 digital output

This is the best DVD player I have ever auditioned. The picture and audio are fabulous. The transport mechanism is absolutely quiet. It makes no noise when playing a disc, and the loading tray slides out beautifully and silently. The back panel has everything you need. This unit also makes a great CD transport or player. I have been very impressed with the DAC in this unit. I do, however, wish this unit would out put a 24 bit/96 kHz signal. It downconverts them to 16/48 for both the optical and digital coax outputs.

There are some features that this player doesn't have that I wish it did. I would like to have HDCD decoding, but it's not a must. I bought this to play DVD's. The menues are simple, but very functional. I do wish it has some of the features of the 550D, but quality is more important to me.

Besides the quality, I also like the fact that this player automatically selects 5.1 on many discs that have Pro-Logic as the default. This unit also spins up discs much faster than the other players I've used. I really like the quick transport response. I think this course is well worth the price. If you are looking for a new DVD player make sure you at least look at this Sony.

Build Quality, DTS, flawless play - has played everything from DVD to CD-R's

Weakness:

None so far.

Open box buy at GG's. What a steal! Not ready for the jump to progressive scan/HD, so I figured I would go with the best alternative. After reading lots of reviews on this forum, I started looking for the best price. I kinda lucked out on this one as it was a demo model. But with 5 year extended warranty, I felt it was too good to pass up. As I said, it has played everything I've put in it. Great picture, great sound(w/ STR-DA777ES). If you're not in the market for progressive scan, look for this one!

This piece is fantastic, video detail is excellent through s-video or component out. What really impressed me was how good this player performs with cd's.I had a cd player that cost twice as much as this unit and did not sound as good. For the guy who enjoys audio as much as video this player is a must.

Strength:

Fast menu access, DAC, ease of use

Weakness:

None yet

There's not much new that I can add that hasn't been said below. The build quality is good, the DACs are great, and the quick menu access is excellent. It happens to bother me more than most people when I have to wait to access a certain chapter in a movie. The 7700 is very quick. The picture is smooth and the audio quality is outstanding. Very satisfied with the purchase.

p.s. I happen to like the jog dial remote, although it's bound to give me fits when I try to integrate it into my Pronto ..

Strength:

Weakness:

jog shuttle, motorized panel, no 24bit 96hz digital pass through

This was a major improvement over the Zenith player it replaced. The Zenith was a model that came with my video projector free so I couldn't really complain. It was a preproduction industrial model of a unit that never made it into production. In fact, when I received it there wasn't even any DVD software available for another 11 months. One interesting note is that even though it was a pre first generation model, I had no problems with The Matrix, lip synch, or dual layered discs.

After auditioning the Sony, Denon, and Pioneer, I ultimately bought the Sony, although all three players are very good units, price became the deciding factor. Getting the Sony for $644 seemed a no brainer. I see a lot of people reviewing with no regard to price, but for all us working stiffs out there it does have a major impact. I have auditioned some of the mega-buck units from boutique manufacturers and they are measurably better. At 5 to 10 times the price I would expect them to be. Unfortunately, the minor increase in performance certainly does not justify the price.

The Sony has had no problem with the 50 or so discs I have thrown at it. Resolution is superb - I have not experienced the "soft" picture others have mentioned. Color rendition is first rate, although I have always liked Sony's video products render color. What came as a pleasant bonus was the low frequency extension and resolution on both CD's and DVD's. I think that the motorized front panel while space age, is a little over done although it does hide buttons from my two year old so it currently has a very useful function. I like being able to turn off the display on the unit...nice touch. The sound presentation seems spot on and the DTS is superb, though this is most likely more a function of my processor than the DVD player.

All in all I have been very pleased. I stayed on the sidelines for quite some time waiting for all the formats to sort themselves out but finally got tired of waiting for "a player for all formats." If and when that happens this will make an excellent addition to the Master Bedroom setup.

I'm trying to find them but no luck

I waited for the price to drop and then I stole this player for $550!! I feel bad for those that had to pay full price, but after hooking this machine up, I can see why this is the "Reference" Model. It took awhile to adjust the video settings from my previous Panasonic, but once I got those component video cables and a coaxial audio cables hooked up, MAN, DOES THIS PLAYER KICK BUTT!!! The picture on my new Wega 400 is astonishing. It is like looking into a mirror. I even think the audio is better than the video. I have a Sony ES CD player, and I am comparing the two, and I am astonished to say that the 7700 wins (I know I am using two different types of cables, but geez!)It is just a more pure sound overall.
People talk about the down-conversion to 48khz whatever, but pop in Saving Private Ryan DTS, and see if your room does not explode like it is in the middle of the war.
Not everyone has the same set up, obviously, but if you have the best of everything, then you can certainly appreciate what the 21st Century has brought to Home entertainment.
My very proud set up:
Sony DVP-7700
Sony STR-777ES
Sony Wega XBR-400
B&W 603 s2 fronts
Boston Acoustics Rears
M&K VX 7 Mk2 sub
I would give the value 10 stars if I could!
