Strength:

Everything

Weakness:

I haven't found any yet

I had an old Sony DVP500 it was a great player but it couldn't play DTS. So, I decided (painfully) to trade in my old player for a new one that will replace my old Nakamichi CD player and DVP500. After much research and asking, I decided to get the expensive DVPS7700. From the moment I brought it home and played my favorite DVDs and CDs I knew I am more than pleased. The picture quality is superb! The sound is astounding! There must be better players out there but if anyone is thinking about getting this machine, go buy it and enjoy it.

Strength:

Color rendition, audio reproduction

I am posting a followup now that I have it hooked up to my video projector. I am experiencing a major problem in that it appears that it is dropping out every other scan line. Upon closer imspection at the screen surface, a solid red/maroon line exists between the scan line that is almost as wide as the scan line itself. The net effect is that of looking through a window with maroon colored blinds. I have tried isolating the power sockets, grounding directly to the projector with the DVD player, video filters, video enhancers, better cabling, using the component output, the S-Video output, and the composite output, all to no avail. When I hook up my old Zenith player the picture is very good although the colors are not as good.

When the image is of the menu still on a particular movie, the picture is fantastic. When I resume the movie it looks great for about 1/2 second and then reverts to the blind slat look. I have exchanged the player and the condition continues. Any help would be appreciated. This condition does not exist with my 36XBR400 or my Panasonic 27".

I know that this is not the forum for tech fixes, but I know more people with 7700's will read this than the tech section. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this as well.

With my projector this is the poorest picture I have seen, with the other monitors is rivals the best.

First of all did anyone else realize that the 9000ES DVD Player won't be able to read CD-R's?

OK here's another interesting question for you all ;)

I connect the S7700 to my TV using RGB SCART which is great for PAL. However I recently was told that using this connection method for NTSC raw 3.58mhz data ( ie composite ) is streamed, in which case S-Video would be better ( component ideal but next-to-no UK TV's have them ).

Does this sound correct? Do you really have to connect RGB for PAL and then S-Video for NTSC? I've never heard anything like this before and I'm convinced that my RGB->S-Video converter ( for Digibox ) can switch for NTSC OR PAL using an RGB connection and then output S-Video. If that is the case then clearly RGB is fine for NTSC.

Anyone know???

Strength:

Does everything its supposed to do very well.

Weakness:

Can't find any.

Being this is my first DVD player I thought Sonys Flagship was a good place to start and I haven't been disapointed. The picture is as clean as I've seen. And I'vre had laserdisc for 10 years. It beats it hands down. Convenience and access to the disc are first rate. The sound is also first rate with fiber optic or coaxial offering similar excellence. Being that its only 13 months old I've not had any trouble with it, as yet.

Strength:

Built Heavy Duty, Very Quiet Operation

Weakness:

None from my view

I bought this unit mainly on how it operated and haw smoothly it worked. I have a Sony 61" XBR 200 which it is coupled to and performs Very well. I have had alot of compliments on how good the picture looks. I've seen others but there are differences to be noticed like edges around things that don't show up and bad on the 7700. There are plenty to choose from out there but really for what you get with this machine is hard to beat for the Money. I did buy a separate DA converter to listen to music on because th DA converter in the Sony is okay but I purchased an MSB Link DAC III to go with it and I am very pleased with the combination. The Sony has played everything with no problems, an excellent machine.

Strength:

Excellent picture, great audio, solid build, the quality of the ES line without the ES badge

Weakness:

The on-screen menus are unattractive and awkward. I've seen better formats on lesser players. The screen saver is far beneath a player of this quality (but I'm nitpicking)

About 6 months ago I finally gave in and bought my first DVD player (the RCA 5215P). Most companies were offering 3rd generation players with most of the initial kinks gone at significantly lower prices. I purchased the RCA because I figured that for $200 if I didn't like it I could swallow the expense. No such luck I caught the bug!

Always in the back of my mind was the DVP-S7700, but I was not about to shell out the $1300 it cost when it initially came out. Now with the market crowded with 3rd generation machines and the pending launch of Sony's own DVP-S9000ES it more than I could resist when J&R began offering the machines at $650!

The DVP-7700 is silky smooth in its operation and built like a tank. Hooked directly into a 36" Proscan, the picture and sound are beyond reproach. As good as the RCA is for the money there was no comparison in performance once the Sony was hooked up. There was just more of everything! Unless you have an HDTV and can use progressive scan this, in my opinion, is the best machine you can buy especially at the discount price level.

By the way please do not discount the RCA 5215P. For $200 you get a machine that is attractive, reliable, well built, Dolby & DTS ready, S video plus component video outputs and a very well thought out menu and sceensaver display. Definitely a best buy in its price range (will not play CD-R's though).

Strength:

Picture, sound, build quality, ......nearly everything.

Weakness:

Blanks out picture and sound momentarily when going from FF or slow motion to play.

I purchased this unit to replace my DVP-S300, having wanted one since it's S700 incarnation. I have it connected to my Sony rear projector via the component video outputs, and to the new Sony STR-V555ES receiver (an awesome unit, by the way) via the digital optical output. Both the picture and sound are incredible! I can see why this player was considered the 'reference standard' for so long. I've had no problems playing CD-Rs on the 7700, but it will not play CD-RWs. My one complaint with this unit is that it cuts out both audio and video momentarily whenever it is switched from fast scan to play, or from slow motion to play. This may be something unique to my player since I haven't read of anyone else having this little glitch. Regardless, this is something that never occured with my S300, and it can be just a tiny bit annoying when trying to find a specific scene on a DVD. All in all, this is a beautiful DVD player in every respect, as well as being an ES quality CD player. I highly recommend this player; especially at the prices for which it can now be found on the net.
