To the people who emailed me concerning the 24/96 output.
The sony DOES have 24bit/96khz digital analogue converters, but downsamples this output through its fibre optical and caoxial digital outputs. They do this to try to prevent piracy, so I am told.
www.msbtech.com do the modification to enable 24/96 output.
The sony does output 24/96 signals through its analogue outputs, so if you are not using an external Digital analogue converter, this is not a problem.

You can't find much better than this high quality and all around phenomenal machine. The picture quality is outstanding, and the best I've seen yet - no artifacting - very vibrant and detailed colors. Very easy to setup, and the player boasts extremely fast disc access. The sound is also terrific. Although its a bit on the pricey side, those that demand the highest in video and audio performance of a dvd player need not look farther than this machine.

Strength:

Ease of setup; Beautiful pictures - amazing sound!

Weakness:

The shuttle wheel on the remote! non-backlit remote; no zoom.

Let me start by thanking my digital friends for helping us make a great decision. We would have been nowhere without this site.

It's our first DVD, and I can't believe we waited this long. We are in the process of doing the whole HT: Sony DA555ES ($609 through buyingedge.com (you've got to try this site!)); this DVD ($698 from Supremevideo.com); B&W 603s2, ASW-500 (I know!); WP-1 monitors (using them inside and outside) and the LRC6.

I gotten about half of it set up so far, and everyone in the family is blown away.

The DVD feels and looks solid. No twitches or hang ups in moving around a disc.

Will post more after the whole thing is put together. Thanks again.

Strength:

Very good picture and sound. Can set up to automatically select PCM or bitstream.

Weakness:

Need to go thru setup to dim the display instead of a toggle switch from other manufactures. It has it's own S-control rather than a standard 12V dc to control power of other eqipment. Pay a lot more to have the gain of performance.

The performance of the unit is very very good. Would like to have the above weaknesses corrected though.

Wow - The weight and copper back plate realy gives a good impression (but does it matter ?).

I was in no doubt that I only had to try this DVD. For the rest of my hifi set, I purchased all within 2 weeks, 30 shop visits and many "try it home buys" of speakers, cables, MD and Rei.

My final set-up:

So my final set-up was:

Sony STR-DA50ES, Sony DVP S7700, Sony MDS JA20ES
Speakers: B&W Nautilus HTM1 + DM602S2, Whaferdale Topaz 15'' + Modus one.

Weakness:

numerous refer below

First off the instructions that come with the thing are annoying, it keeps refering you back and forth. Second the front panel is a waste. It looks cut but seems to have no purpose other than wasteing money on development. The remote is huge with the buttons places in ackward places.
My biggest complain is that the dang thing has frozen on two out of three dvd's I've played on it. about midway through both dvd's it freezes and if i don'tpress stop and then play again it automatically jumbs to the next chapter. VERY UNACCEPTABLE. possibly it's a problem with the dvd's themselves(Glatiator and Meet the parents)but i doupt that being that they are fresh out of the wrapping.
I really hated to write this review but I had high hopes for this high priced piece of equiptment. I based my home theater purchases on this web site. Guess I got a lemon.
My system:
Sony KV-36FS12 Wega television
Sony DVP-S7700 DVD player
Sony STR-DE845 A/V reciever
Energy Loudspeaker Take5 speaker system
BetterCables connections
**all my equiptment is less than two weeks old if anyone can help me reference to my dvd player problems it would be much appreciated. email me at peanutking15@hotmail.com **

Strength:

The picture of course. Audio is better than anyone should expect from a DVD unit, especially on CDs' and a select CD-R see below for more on that.

Weakness:

Only plays limited selected brand CD-rs' and no CD-rw playback.

I hate to write repeat entries too, but because some folks may purchase this unit as their sole digital source for playback A/V. I should note that if you should come across a CD-r to play, the Sony may have a tough time playing it. My Kodak with DATAguard won't play,my Memorex Gold,or my Taiyo Yuden CD-rs'. As I said ealier, don't even bother with the CD-rws'. My Imation CD-r DA discs play in them though. Though if the track spacing is a bit narrow, the Sony may clip off the first 1/2 second or so. On some of my other Imation recording projects, the Sony is terrific. So if
CD-r discs are going to be heavily in your future, consider the 7700, but with the notion that limited type of discs will only play in it. Consider getting a good quality bargain CD player or recorder. They are cheap enough, and versatile too. A computer burner is good too if you integrate you computer with the rest of your multi-media system. Hope this helps all those frustrated CD-R fans out there.Though with this above limitation, the Sony still amazes me in its' performance. V.C.
