I have been nothing but very satisfied with the audio and video performance of this model. I have just learned a painful lesson though, it doesn't play my CD-r's. I took one of my CDr's into the dealer where I purchased this player and the disk played just fine on their display model. They have said they will exchange it, but since the problem seems to depend on which 7700 I play the disk on I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

Strength:

Build quality and the no BS approach

Weakness:

None really

I recently sold my beloved S7000 and purchased the S7700 for about $700 new through the web. When I got the unit, the box it was in was beat up pretty badly and I was afraid the unit would be a mess. luckily it was perfect. I opened the unit to check out the inards and this beast is built like a brick! Everything is smooth as silk the CD audio is to die for. Even DAD's play great (especially through the analog outs). As for the units downconverting 96/24 to 48/16, well I for one can live with that because my Sony Receiver only processes at that rate anyway. The Picture IS sharper than the S7000. Skin tones and colors in general are excellent (my S7000 had very good colors). Everything is good enough to justify the upgrade from the S7000 to the S7700. Let's face it, DVD reproduction ain't cheap. This IS the most reliable player (at least for it's price) on the market today IMHO.

Strength:

Excellent combo of Reference DVD & extremely good ( especially for a DVD player ) CD Transport

Weakness:

Lack of Multichannel (AC3/DTS) decoding perhaps, but its soulmate is the E9000ES / N9000ES Combo. Who would pair this DVD player with a Pro-Logic / Stereo amp?

After my first S7700 died my dealer let me go for a Techtronics Multimod S7700 which is even better w/ the FBI skip and Auto-Region ( w/ manual switching backup ). The player itself it pure class when used as a transport, I haven't used the DAC/Phono out stage so no comments, but when paired with the E9000ES ( 1.18c ) & 2 N9000ES power amps prepare to be FLOORED.
I believe it might have been me who reccomended the Powerslab to Jeff, so you may already have realised that I think it's great ;0
The Powerslab is a PERFECT fit for the S7700 and is essential to really get the most out of it ( as is decent isolation beneath it, I use CFI's but anything is better than nothing ;-) ).
I'm extremely happy with the Sony killer-combo..... you will/would be too!

Strength:

Great ergonomics, Beautiful Finish
Fancy but useful gadgetry

Weakness:

FF and Rew times 2 only.
Remote backlight is laughable

I finally decided to get the dvd player I wanted and I wasn't disappointed with my purchase. This is truly a work of art.
Sound quality is superb and the picture is something to behold. The player operates seamlessly and is really a good looking piece of equipment. I haven't had any problem playing any of my dvd's including dts encoded discs. (Just be sure to turn dts "on" in setup prior to playing. I got all worked up over nothing until I decided to read the manual to discover dts is off by default)
My system:

Denon 3600dts Receiver
Sony 7700 dvd player
Denon DMD1000 Mini disc
NHT VS-2 center channel
Kef coda 7 rears
Kef C35 fronts
Energy ES8 sub
Panasonic TV

Awesome system, awesome player!!

Strength:

Crystal-clear video & Full, sharp audio. Well built.

Weakness:

On-screen menus look a little dated. Remote slightly difficult to use and doesn't light-up in dark (glow-in-the-dark keys are ineffective).

If you have the money to spend, I highly recommend this DVD Player as the audio and video quality goes unmatched. There are zero gimmicky features in this solidly built player.

Strength:

Video, Audio, Build.

Weakness:

Remote is hard to get used to. Price is a little high when I purchased it.

I've had the Sony S7700 for over a few months by now. No complaints other than the remote. The picture quality is superb. Other than DVD, I've played VCD, CD, and CD-R on it with no problem what so ever. I agree with others that it is a little expansive but if you are looking for the best, you certainly won't be disappointed.

Strength:

Natural colors, fine picture, quality built, nice finish, cd-r, very good remote

Weakness:

no 24/96 digital throughput, no detachable power cord

At the new low price, thid dvd-player is a good value. The picture is what i expected from Sony, nice and natural. The sound on dvds is also better than most dvd players.

For cd-playback, the sound is very good for a dvd player but not comparable to high end cd player. The meridian 506.24 i sold last week was much better and much more refined. So can be said about my Kinergetics kdc-40 (10 years old) wich sounds also noticably better. But here, we are comparing a dvd player to dedicated geat cd players.

Amound dvd players, there are not many that can be used as audiophile cd player. The only one i can see is the Sony dvp-s9000es dvd/sacd player. But the dvp-s9000es is about twice the price, so the dvp-s7700 is a good temporary alternative. I also consider the Denon dvm-3700 to be a highly competitive alternative.

This DVD player just arrived last week at my doorstep. I paid $868 for this unit that goes on sale for $1100 at my local HIFI store. (Go to www.video-direct.com). If you call them and their phone is NOT busy- thank your lucky stars. It's the real deal and I am VERY HAPPY.
It makes my CD's sound better than my DENON DCD-1560 Reference Player did (so now I am selling that for <$50 on EBAY (Item # 89891319). Along side my new Yamaha DSP A1- and my 7 speaker surround, I've turned my 1952 suburban ranch into kickass concert arena and IMAX movie theater. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! This DVD player is awesome in every way.

I have never owned any other DVD player so I don't know what a lousy player looks like- I just know that this one is more than I expected. The weakest link in my HT system now is the TV. I have an old Philips with a burned out tuner (which forced me to change channels with the VCR remote). But, when I switch the input on the TV from composite video to S-video (cause I have them hooked up both ways), the difference in video quality is really stunning.

A tip on showing off your system - go to EBAY and get those DTS Demo Disc's (like disc #3) with vignettes of the Eagles, Daylight, Titanic, Dragonheart, etc. They really are impressive.

I just got mine!! I paid only $589 at http://go.to/etronicsonline WOW!!! I'm surprised how much everyone else here overpaid. I can't compare this player to too many others but I can say that for the price, this is a beautiful piece. It is fairly solid (not like the Denon 5000 or some more exotic stuff)but what do you expect for the price?
The video and audio side of this player are excellent (I'm not using the component outputs yet). Picture and sound a clean and clear. I would buy it again.
