Strong build and construction. Dual lasers

Weakness:

Sony makes you pay for a good product

At a time when prices for DVD players are falling
(Pioneer DV-525) the Sony 7700 still sits at $795.00. I upgraded to this unit and replaced the Sony 7000 and
there is not much difference between the two players with the major exception being that the 7700 is DTS capable. This is not why we pay a high price for this player. We
pay a high price because we pit this model against other companies best player. This is why the 7700 is still the king. Here are other reasons:
1. People pay $795.00 for the Pioneer Elite DV-05 DVD player and when they get it they are dissapointed because
it is very light (slightly heavier than the DV-525.)
What is that? Those of us who own the 7700 do not worry about this problem as our unit weighs about 20 pounds.
2. For those who got a good deal on $250 players, the noise you hear when the disc spins is the price you pay. You do
not hear any of that with the 7700. That front sliding door keeps the noise OUT! Solid construction people. No more
having to buy a $125.00+ cabinet with glass doors because your DV-525 makes too much noise.
3. Lip sinc problems? Not with this player. Once again,
$795.00 may be too much for today, but if it can buy you quality why not go for it.
4. Did I mention the fact that this player sounds better than my dedicated 1994 Sony 5cd changer. I know, Duh.
5. The real reason why this is a good investment is when
the DVD Audio players come out in 3 years you can use the 7700 as a CD only transport since it has a dedicated CD laser. This player is ES quality without the ES stamp.
HDCD, Progressive Component, why worry about that? If you
do not own a Toshiba HDTV whats the point?

Take a look at the picture and you'll know how good DVD can be. The big surprise for me was when I gave it a real good listen. This is one of the best sounding CD players I have ever herd. Don't just put it up on the video rack give it a listen too.

Strength:

Well bulit. Looks nice.

Weakness:

No progressive scan. No hdcd.

No progressive scan so unit is already outdated. Also no hdcd. So with the ever changing technology even though this is a well built good performing piece it is just to far behind the Toshibas. So in hindsight should of bought a Toshiba. But my guess is the 7700 will be discontinued soon to be replaced by a progressive scan/hdcd unit.
So 5 stars for when I bought it but 1 star for being outdated now.

Strength:

Excellent picture quality.

Weakness:

Price, possible production quality control.

I've auditiond most of the better players before I bought the Sony. While some had sharper pictures of better sound, the DVP-S7700 was the best overall. The one weakness that all of the other players I auditioned that was mostly absent from the Sony was freedom from artifacts. The Denon in particular was so artifact ridden that I considered it totally unwatchable. My second choice would have been the Dvl09. While it had more digital artifacts than the Sony, the picture was noticibly sharper.

The one concern I had with this unit was quality control. I don't know if this is widespread, But I went through THREE exchanges to get a non defective unit!! Assuming the unit functions correctly I rate it highly.

Strength:

Best video quality avalible, and make for a decent transport.

Marvin's either kidding or a loyal Panosonic or Toshiba employee.

Now about this player, It is not the most detailed player available. Other players such as Denon's DVD 5000 are definitely more detailed. Pioneer's DVL09 has better color.
Faroudja's $5000 player(Souped up Toshiba) is a joke at their asking price.

So what, By a large margin this Sony is the best player available due to one strength. LACK OF DIGITAL ARTIFACTS!!!

Lines on the Toshiba SD 9100 are so jagged when viewed on an 100" screen that the picture is unwatchable. The same is true of the Denon. Pioneer's Dvl09 is slightly better in this regard but still flawed.

If you watching on a crappy 32 inch Wega or other such ilk, then you probably don't notice or can live with such flaws. On a 100" screen the sawtooth pattern of the jagged lines is a full 2 inches in width!

I'll happily live with the Sony until good HDTV players and software become available.

Strength:

excellent video and audio playback, built like a tank, new and improved lower price!!!!

Weakness:

No zoom or gimicky features, lousy control for s;ow motion or fast motion.

Bought this player to replace my Toshiba player that will not play the newer dvd's on my HT setup. Overall I like the features on the Toshiba a little better, but the picture and audio playback on the Sony is better. Did I mention that the new and improved price was a major factor in its purchase? I bought from Onecall.com (please mention my name and speak with Thomas) They matched the best price from another dealer. (Onecall is also an authorized internet Sony dealer, so you know you're getting a new and not refurbished product)I like the fit and finish on this machine, it has weight and substance and looks better than most players out there. The new 9000ES Sony machine is nice, but a bit pricey for me at this time. The 7700 is indeed a worthy piece for any HT setup I'm sure anyone would be happy with this unit.

Had some minor problems playing MATRIX

Excelent DVD no question about that but I had two minor audio skips ( very short skips, about 1/4 a second ) when I played "Matrix".I returned movie and got a replacement but I had the same problems at the exact part of the movie. I was told that this player might have problems playing the newer DVDs ( golden color disk that says DUAL-Layer Format). Anyone have this problem? This is the only movie with a minor problem. Need help, anyone?

I MADE MY DECISION BASED ON MUCH RESEARCH AT THIS SITE.
IT SEEMS ALL OTHER PLAYERS HAVE PROBLEMS IN ONE AREA OR ANOTHER.SYNC PROBLEMS,PICTURE PROBLEMS,FLIMSY BUILD,ETC.
I HAVE MUCH MONEY INVESTED IN MY SYSTEM.I WON'T COMPROMISE
BASED ON PRICE ONLY.AFTER DOING MY HOMEWORK,I PAID $689 FOR
THIS PLAYER.ALTHOUGH,THIS IS MORE THAN THE AVERAGE STREET PRICE OF THE "PROBLEM"PLAYERS,IT IS NOT OUT OF REACH BY MOST.

AS FAR AS THIS UNIT...IT'S ALL BEEN SAID ALREADY...PERFECT IN EVERY ASPECT.AND I HAVE FED IT EVERY TROUBLESOME DVD,CD I COULD FIND.PICTURE IS PERFECT...SOUND IS EVEN BETTER.
SO IF YOU READ THE REVIEWS OF THE OTHERS(INCLUDING SONY)
THE ONLY LOGICAL THING TO DO IS BUY THE 7700 PERIOD

Strength:

Dual descrete pickups, build quality, audio/video reproduction. Cool front pannel.

Weakness:

Cool front pannel annoying at times, decent remote.

This is an excellent player for the current sale price at crutchfield. I wouldn't have bought it for the full $1200 msrp, but at this price it's an excellent value! The player is very fast and it's operations are smooth every step of the way. The picture it provides is excellent and the soundtracks are even better! The one thing that sony can't seem to get right is remotes, the remote for this unit is large and rather clumsy, but I guess I didn't purchase this product for the remote. The sound quality on dolby digital tracks through my sony reciever is nothing short of stunning and as long as you don't plan on getting a progressive tv anytime soon I'd say this is an excellent purchase. I have experienced none of the problems I have read about in prior reviews up to this point and have used the player with a variety of rented titles!

Besides DVD capabilities the Player is also an excellent CD player if not a little revealing. The build quality on this player is simply great the disc drawer is firm and slides in and out of it's compartment smoothly, the only other players I've seen this type of build quality used on are the $1500 and up players such as sony's newest model the ES 9000.

At this price DVD doesn't get much better, check out crutchfield if you are interested.

My system consists of:

Sony STR-745 DD reciever
Energy Take 5 speakers
Energy E:xl-8 sub
Zenith Televison
Monster cable interconnects

For the price it better be a good player.I didn`t notice a big differance between it and there cheaper models.I personally would rather put my extra money in better speakers or seperate amps or a good processer.Anyone who puts 2800.00 on a receiver and considers themselves highend buyers are a joke.put your money on clean power and good speakers.
