    Strength:

Good sound and picture- Excellent built and finish

    Weakness:

    Video can be better

Ok, I read so many get this guy to play CD. That I agree it does well. Does it sound like a more expensive CD player? May be. But I feel from a audiofile stand point the overall character of the sound is a bit upfront with ever so slightly exagerated midrange. I enjoy this unit a whole lot. However I always feel that one day it breaks in that midrange and get things a sweeter ballance. But that is me- If you want ultra resolution and clity look no further.
Videowise, I have to say this unit while performs with exceptional detail and color it has some problem that hope Sony will address soon. I have used this unit with a 100" FP and it shows a slight edge enhancement. However, it should not be a problem with smaller screen size. The so called chroma upsampling issue has not been a real problem with my sample and I have not seen it with this one. The tweaked Genesis chipset has worked well and I have only seen combing once in some twenty DVDs. I feel Sony could have done a better job with remote as it is a fine but not best remote. The power up is slow for my taste (slower than my HTPC to boot) and menu system is outdated but functional. Overall, it is amoung the best for the price bracket.

    Strength:

Excellent transparency and detail across the freq. range. Excellent with SACD's and regular CD's. Solid build, cool blue light, 2 sets of rca outs good for interconnecting cables a/b comparisons

    Weakness:

Difficult to read the front panel. The color black.

For the money, it would be very difficult to beat. My intention is to have SuperMods alter it and provide an even better sound for $250. Rumor has it that the sound quality can be increased perhaps up to 40%.

Play your music with the audio direct button engaged, thereby shutting down the video and digital processing, and your sound quality is taken up a good notch.

    Strength:

    Build,Warranty,picture,SACD

    Weakness:

Zoom(lack of)if you want to call it a weakness, no headphone jack.

I purchased this unit to replace my 16+ year old Denon CD player(2nd generation I believe)since I wanted to make as significant an upgrade to my 2 channel system as possible without actually taking up more space or electrical outlets.(I had at first considered a subwoofer to add to my new set of Martin Logan AeriusI speakers but space/WAF/elctrical upgrades made it unfeasable at this time). After reading about this unit here and in other publications, I decided to give this puppy a try. Considering I will probably never get the chance to put a multi-channel reciever with another 4 or 5 speakers in my living/listening room, this unit seemed to make sense. I am by no means disappointed. The CD playback without break-in is better than my old Denon unit. SACD sounds amazing plus I get a DVD player to boot! I may not get to fully appreciate its progressive scan feature since I dont plan to upgrade my TV anytime soon, even still, the picture on my 27" 7 yr old Sony keeps me happy. I see no point in other reviewers trashing this product, as it is quite good. As others have stated here, it may not be the best CD player or even the best DVD player available but for the money it does alot of things very well. Granted, if you have the financial means and the space for a multichannel SACD player and separate DVD player you can probably do better and get an nth degree closer to audio/video perfection at a significantly greater cost. If on the other hand, you wish to upgrade an aging system and are looking for a relatively inexpensive way to do it, I would recommend you give this unit an audition.

    Strength:

Absolutely the best DVD picture quality available! Superb 2 channel SACD capability which is the way music is supposed to be played.

    Weakness:

No feedback from the component (ie. track number, etc..)

Many of the reviews I aggree with, so why repeat them again? The looks are not as appealing to me as the output on my screen. The 6 or 7 available buttons on the equipment hardly move, so to get a reaction you really need a good push. Pushing them also leaves fingerprints on the front panel, however, since most actions take place with the remote this is not as important but a disappointment in a an 'ES' component. The loading drawer is smooth and elegant but shallow to the point of not being sure the disc is in place.

The picture is nothing short of mesmerizing. The inclusion of separate memories for color, tint, bright, black level, sharp, gamma (the most extensive video equalizer ever) on a non-professional unit, and noise reduction is remarkable and can be memorized for up to 300 movies so that when you play them back a second time the machine remembers all these "tweaks" you made - a home run for Sony.

CD sound is very good considering it is not built to play cds, BUT the SACD sound is absolutely fantastic. Even non audio enthusiasts NOTICE the difference! I have also successfully played cd-r's without incident.

    Strength:

    Film like quality

    Weakness:

    CDR/W compatibilty

I have been happy with the video playing quality on my SONY 65", I liked 7000 and 7700 before, that's the reason bought 9000ES, will upgrade to 9900 when it comes out. No question about this. There are already plentful praises about product. So not to repeat here, it beats some low-end movie house!

But I begin to find lack of CDR/W compatibilty annoying, especially nowaday, you have got digital camera/camcorder. I am unable to playing all the family photoshow movies on CDR/W, but take discs to a neigbour's low end DVD player, discs do play well, my wife to tease on everytime.

I know some user say it works on some CDR or buners, or speed. Anyone had luck please email me advise on burner brand, recording speed, media type, recording software asap before my wife forcing me to dump this babe for a low end Apex.

    Thanks a lot!

    Strength:

To say "Ultra fantastic picture quality" would be an understatement. Couple this with extremely accurate audio reproduction, great design, beautiful appearance, add in true quality and the ultimate in workmanship...You've got a DVP-S900es!

    Weakness:

No zoom (not good for those of us who own HD Widescreens), Won't play CDR discs (Good point though, read below)

I can't say enough about the picture quality! The only way to get better picture quality is to see your optometrist and have your eyes checked! It blows the competition out of the water! If I had to do it all over again I would be the first in line to buy a 9000ES!!!

Not all dvd movies are created equal though! Even "Star Wars Episode 1" was recorded in very poor quality! Try renting, or purchasing Walt Disney's Dinosaur. It has without a doubt the best picture quality of any DVD movie I've seen.

My monitor is a Pioneer SD-582HD5 58" High definition Widescreen connected to my 9000ES with Monster Cable component cables.

Picture clarity is so great that you'll see things the director didn't really intend to be seen. things like thin suspension strings and wires can be seen sometimes. These are things the directors didn't worry about, because almost all DVD players on the market aren't capable of the quality needed to make them visible on screen.

With the movie Dinosaur you feel as though you could reach into the screen. When water is splashed you almost feel like you need to put something in front of the monitor to keep the carpet dry! My friends and family even tell others how great the picture on my system is, and that says a lot to me! Yes, we have a very good alarm system!

As far as the inability to play CDR discs...Would you really be happy with the quality of them? This player has advanced SACD circuitry and reproduces sound in extremely accurate detail. Most Audiophiles who own this player have invested a countless hours in research and set up, as well as a small mountain of dollars purchasing their systems. Would it make much since then to go out and throw CDs into it that were made on $75 burners with inferior lasers, substandard circuitry and software, then burned onto whatever discs K-Mart had for the cheapest price that week? Your bad experience listening to the result would probably then be blamed on the Sony player. Sony opted out of that mess! Good for them!

I'm not going to say how much money I've got tied in my system(You wouldn't believe it anyway!), but my choice is factory discs recorded on state of the art equipment that only the audio industry can afford.

    Strength:

Best DVD,SACD,CD and CDR Player on the Market

    Weakness:

    None

This product is fantastic. The video and audio quality are second to none. I have not tried SACD yet.

I have a very extensive DVD collection and this player really shows up the difference between video production quality. You can fine tune the picture quality with this player which is a very nice feature if you have some poor production quality DVD's. I am playing it through a Sony KDP65XBR2 which is also superb.

CD material is also very good, much much better than my Technics unit.

One important issue about the 9000ES is that it does not play CDR's, well this is NOT true. The fix is to make sure you burn your CDR's on a Sony burner. I had an HP burner before and it would not play anything. My brother has another Sony DVD and his plays CDR's with no problems. His burner is also a Sony.

I have just finished installing a CRX175A1 and it works a treat, no problems at all.

I highly recommend this DVD/CD/SACD/CDR Player. Good Job Sony!

    Thx Ben

    Strength:

Picture Quality, Ease of Use, Audio Quality

    Weakness:

Very few buttons on face of unit

I have had this unit for over a year now. It has performed flawlessly. I am sometimes embarrassed when friends come over and see a Sony piece in my rack with the other components. I justify it by putting on a DVD and they begin to understand. The Sony is the least expensive piece in my rack, including my cables and it does a wonderful job. I also use it as a transport for a Pass Labs D1. The mechanism is sturdy and the sound is great. For SACD, it can't go through the D1, but sound is still outstanding. Three people that have seen my 9000es in action have purchased their own. They are as happy as I am. That says something. While I can not say it is the best CD (or SACD) player or maybe even DVD player, I can easily say that there is nothing in its price range that can touch it as a DVD player or 2 channel SACD player.

    Strength:

    Unfortunately haven't realized any yet.

    Weakness:

    Picture.

I have been shopping for a hi-end progressive scan dvd player to replace my Sony DVP-s550d for a couple of months and I narrowed the finalists down to 3 players: Denon 2800, Toshiba 9200 and the Sony 9000es. I wound up choosing the Sony to use with my HDTV-ready 36XBR450 TV.

I was very exciting about receiving the new player and was anxiously awaiting the to see the 'wonderful world of progressive scan'. However after spending much of the weeking trying to calibrate what is now a very poor picture, I must say I am VERY ...VERY ... disappointed.

I connected the player directly to my xbr using monster 3 component video cables and digital coax to my sony strv444es receiver for 5.1 sound. I set the xbr to 16:9/4:3 widescreen mode and the player to progressive output. When I first turned the player on, I was underwhelmed to say the least. The piture was dark and I noticed absolutely no picture clarity improvement over that of my old player (Sony DVP-S550d) which I have been using for the last 2.5 years. In fact I starting watching Saving Private Ryan last night on the 9000es, it it was so difficult to see, I wound up finishing the movie on the 550d.

I spent much of the weekend trying to improve the picture on the 9000es by calibrating my tv using Avia. The picture still is not as good as that of the 550d.

Having read all of the rave reviews about the 9000es' picture on this board, I figure my problem must be one of 2 things: 1) I am missing something in the setup; or 2) I have a lemon.

I haven't given up on the player yet, but I would really appreciate any insight on what the problem may be.
