I used the reviews to help me pick this unit. The sales person at BB also led me to believe it was a good one. It was great for the first four months, then it would no longer load any disc. I have the extended warranty from BB so it will be fixed free.GOOD!! BAD *!&#* It will take up to 3 weeks to fix. I have purchased 3 computers with dvd's more than 2 years ago no problems. VCR's lasted more than 2 years before any issue.Whats up ?? The tech at the counter tell me that this is common for this unit.5 unit this week. Please check with the people who gave it a good review and see if that is still true. My brother has had a Sony for more than 2 years without any issue. I now believe this were made cheaply and both BB and Toshiba knows it. Also beware of the warranty it may get fixed but the amount of time it takes is not acceptable BUYERS BEWARE of this unit and BESTBUY

Weakness:

Noisy

Although the price is now higher than when I purchased my unit 5 months ago, it still represents a good value.

DVD's play flawlessly, particularly if you hit play and nothing else. The remote is not made to be used by adult human hands. Also, the unit does not always default to 5.1 channel play, which I have on my Rotel/B&W System.

Audio CD's have much better soundstage when hooked up via the analog RCA outputs than the digital coaxial line. Some CD's make a clicking sound as they rotate; I have two Toshiba units that make this clicking sound, so it must be a design flaw rather than a product defect.

Strength:

Pretty Good Player. Toshiba has indeed learned from their mistakes in previous series.

Weakness:

Blacker than Black Effect - cannot compare to Sony 7700 or Pioneer DVL-700 models.

I was hesitant about purchasing the 1200 Model, due to Toshiba having major compatibility issues with previous series DVD Players. After purchasing this player, I've played every mainstream movie that indeed has issues with other players, no problems found. The movies I used for testing: Three Kings, The Matrix, Dragon's Lair, Enemy of The State and Austin Powers - Plays these movies with NO problems.

One enhancement is offers: Blacker than Black Emulation. The emulation helps out, but cannot compare to Sony 7700 or Pioneer DVL-700 Players, don't even try to compare picture quality. =)

What is Blacker than Black Effect? Dedicated IC to provide "BLACK" Color, unlike all new players Emulate BLACK with very-very dark shades of grey to look black. This feature is why the Sony 7700 and Pioneer DVL-700/Elite Series co$t over $1000 --- It's awesome!

ANYWAY, Toshiba has learned (slowly) from their mistakes from previous generation DVD Players. This player is a very good player for the money...don't hesitate.

Strength:

Great all-around DVD-player.

Weakness:

CD-R capability.

Had it about a month; very happy with it. Came highly recommended from a guy at work, and also from this site. I don't think you can compete with this model without spending at least a hundred or so more than I did.

Terrific deal at Buy.com!

Strength:

First DVD player.....thought it was great...at first.

Weakness:

See below.

Froze on "Three Kings" and wouldn't play "Waterworld" at all....."disc error"....ya right....player error.
Took it back to Sears and traded it for a JVC XV-525.
"Waterworld" played just fine on the JVC.
Quite disappointed in my experience with the Toshiba, but DVD sure beats VHS....

Strength:

Picture Quality.
Stylish Design.
DD/DTS compatibility.
CD text compatibility
VCD playback.

Weakness:

No optical output for DD/DTS.

This is an awesome player for the money I have put into it. Have used the older version SD 2109 for quite some time before this. This is the most complete and minimal price combination from my research.
I did not want the decoder to be inside the player because that would limit my flexibility of selecting my own receiver. Hence no inbuilt receiver is not at all a downside to me. Plays Dts DVDs to deliver awesome surrond sound through my receiver Pioneer VSXD608. Picture quality is much better than the JVC.
Only downside I could think of is to not have an optical output to connect to my receiver.
Remote is little weak and smaller in size. Have to point direct to the player for operation. I use the multi function remote that came with my receiver to operate my DVD player and hence this does not bother me either.
I suggest this player to anyone who is looking for a best quality for a reasonable price.

Strength:

Excellent Picture, Zoom Capability, Price, Dynamic Range of Sound

Weakness:

Background Hiss

What's with this thing ? Isnt it digital ? Why is it then that I can hear a constant hiss while playing DVD's even though I'm using the digital co-ax output - and a high quality IXOS cable ($130 cable)? The hiss is especially noticeable during quiet passages of the movie. Unless there is background music or sound effects the hiss is quite annoying. I thought digital sound processing would result in TOTAL SILENCE unless there was sound source on the movie. Very disappointing.

Otherwise the picture is fantastic. The ability to zoom if the black bars are too wide is great and the overall sound clarity and dynamics are unbelievable. Too bad about the hiss.

Strength:

DVD rocks

Weakness:

It flips

PROS:
I like DVD. Watchin movies is a blast! I have my DVD player to my 32" TV which outputs to my stereo. The sound and video are awesome. I like the fact that you can pause a movie and not have those lines across the middle. And the subtitles are better than using closed captioning. And I dont know why everyone's complaining about the remote. The buttons you really need are on the bottom. I memorized where play and pause are (very easily) and know where pretty much every other button is. So, bring the dark and gimme the remote.

CON:
I dont know about anyone else but I have not been able to watch 1 single DVD without having the video flip. Anyone know what causes that? It's not my TV and I have cleaned the DVD (using a cleaning disc).

Strength:

Everything!

Weakness:

None, I even like the controller!

Amazing! Just got the player today, easy to hookup. Plays DVDs awesome, I love it! Right now I have it connected to my VCR via the composite cables it comes with, then my VCR is connected to my sound system via composite, and the vcr is connected to my TV via standard cable, not the best configuration, but the video quality is amazing, I can't wait until I rewire everything tomorrow! Also, for those who say it's a noisy player, maybe you have a faulty machine, I was playing a movie, I turned the sound system on mute, put my head against the DVD player and couldn't even hear it running, it's amazingly quiet. And for those who hate the beep it makes when you go through menus, read the manual, you can turn it off by setting the "Remote Confirmation" to Off. I'm so happy I purchased this player, and for $135 it was a steal!
