Strength:

Great Picture / Sound

Weakness:

Doesn't play CDR

This is a supplement to my review below...

The noise I spoke of in the picture. That was just compression noise on that particular track of that particular disc... Should have played a few more DVDs before writing that review... sorry.

I have now put half a dozen DVDs through the machine, and can say the picture is excellent. Not one lockup either. Plays the Matrix perfectly. Layer transitions are barely noticable.

The sound remains unbelievable. I have my nice cables hooked up now, I can't say I hear or see a difference, but they look nice and thick :).

One other thing of note: My player is the SD-1200Y model, and it has an Optical digital out as well as Coaxial. The Toshiba site states it only has Coaxial out. Anyone else get an optical out they weren't expecting?

Great player for the $.

Price, Zoom, Comp. Out.

Single disk.

Purchased it open box for $ 150.00. Great price for entry level unit. Great picture and sound quality. Piece of advice upgraded your interconnets cables. I did what a difference it both sound and video quality. Picked up Ixos silver series cables from accessories4less.com for about $ 60.00. Money well spent.

For the price this is a very good unit. I've enjoyed testing this unit and would reccomend it to my friends that are in the market for an entry level DVD player.

Strength:

Sharp Picture, Half-way decent sound, ease of setup

Weakness:

Anamorphic downconversion

I bought this product because when DVD players first became
available, the Toshiba and Sony models were ranked the
best.
I am, unfortunately a tad disillusioned with this model.
Admittedly the picture is quite sharp and the sound on some
of the movies I have tried have been quite good with the bass really kicking in nice, deep and sharp. However, other
movies ("The Mummy") seem a little thin despite a review
I read that claimed just the opposite.

The one thing that really annoyed however is the anamorphic downconversion artifacts. I do not have a widescreen TV nor can I afford one at the moment so all my viewing is on a standard 4:3 TV. Watching the first Alien movie was almost painful. Luckily of the five movies I have watched it was the only one that was really bad (the other movies all displayed it as well but not as badly). Chapter 5 of the movie when they first find the dead alien in the derelict ship is a prime example of what I am talking about. As the camera pulls back to reveal the room you can see all kinds of rippling effects across the grid of the floor, across the chair of the alien and on the alien itself. It was quite bad. And this appears all throughout the movie.

I went back to the store and we tried out the movie on the Sony 570 and voila, no artifacts whatsoever. However, the picture seemed softer and I have heard a number of
negative items about SONY players so I will stay away from it I guess. The Pioneer model seems to noisy from what
I have been reading here so that just leaves the Panasonic (as only these three models handle the down-conversion correctly or so I have been told).

Price, Easy Menu, Quality Sound, Solid Quality Construction

Weakness:

Won't play Vivid DVDs (hey, it was a sample I got @ E3)

I will start by saying that this DVD player has Audio almost equivalent to my Onkyo Integra CD player, which is saying a lot. It was hard to tell the difference. I picked up this DVD player after going through two different models of Sony DVD players. Both Sonys had harsh, overly detailed and bright sound. Sony was a company well known for quality over the years, but lately their quality has really sucked. Both my Sony players went bad (one laser, the other mechanical). The Pioneer had too much mechanical noise.. The Toshiba had the warmest color (most realistic) and best sound (soft and detailed, easy on the ears). There are a lot of options, ENHANCED BLACK which makes me feel like I am in a movie theatre and it has DTS output to a compatible receiver too.. Great performance, great value, good quality.

Strength:

Everything except the remote, can be found for under $200

Weakness:

the remote - the worst one I have seen

Great inexpensive player, never had problems with 20+ rental DVDs. I paid much less than $200 at mobshop.com for it but it is worth even the $250 price tag. The zoom is a must for somebody like me with a 3:4 TV set. Make sure that the audio compression is off (forgot how Toshiba calls it), the default is "on" and it really compresses the sound, even through the digital out. The picture quality looks great to me. Recommended to anyone.

Strength:

Excellent Audio & Video Quality. Cool zoom feature normally found on higher level players. Plays CD-RWs

Weakness:

Not a very well thought out remote. Does not play CD-Rs

I had been considering replacement of my Creative Labs DXr2 Kit for some time now. I had this player for more than 2 years and not a problem!!(just wanted to move the computer out of the living room) I did a fair amount of research on 2 entry-level players: Sony S360 and the Toshiba SD1200. After hearing all the stories on how bad previous Toshiba DVD models were, I didn't know what to expect. So I started reading reviews on this new one and my doubts were soon alleviated. My first impression of the Sony on the shelf was an extremely noisy drive and the Toshiba was quite the opposite. The Sony has a softer picture when downconverting an anamorphic disk for 4:3 TV, the Toshiba was much sharper in this area. I plan on buying a widesceen TV in the next year and wanted a player that had Component Video out as well as a good picture, the Toshiba won again(the Sony does have Component though). I had a few other Sony components and really wanted to buy a Sony DVD player, however the Toshiba won hands down. I have played several movie titles and have not had any problems except one - The Abyss: SE, where I had a lockup problem with the mult-angle pseudopod sequence. I tried a few other multi-angle disks such as Rammstein: Live Aus Berlin and Metallica: Cunning Stunts and not one hiccup, so the problem must be isolated to just the Abyss disk and not mult-angle capability in general.

I did some experimenting with different CD-R's and found none of them worked(Silver, Gold, Blue/green coated). When I tried a VCD CD-RW I made recently, bango!, it read like it was real one!!

The only minor gripes I have with this unit are, of course, the remote and the slightly brighter sound it adds to CDs(through Coax. Out). I guess I can't have everything at this price.

You won't be disappointed with this unit. If you already have a DD Decoder and a primary CD player go for it! If you don't have either go for the SD2200! Paid $350 Canadian at A&B Sound. An outstanding unit for the price. I have firmware rev. 1.5 (check this by pressing Zoom 606 Zoom on the remote)

Weakness:

Jumpy Picture

I bought this thing on mobshop for under $150. I got a great deal so I can't complain too much. I have had a problem however. The picture seems really "jumpy" and also when I turn on DVD player (it vibrates ever so slightly on the screen), it interferes with my television. has anyone else had this problem. The colors, sharpness all seem good. And the sound has been great, but I am not so discriminating.

Strength:

Picture quality, sound, price, features

Weakness:

Remote buttons are a bit small, but not really an issue. The remote is well laid out.

I like it. I like a A LOT! This unit has about the best picture quality/sound quality I've ever heard from a DVD player. It can be had for an amazing $159.99 (free shipping!) from Mopshop.com---I bought 2 for that price! The unit is light (3-4 pounds), but seems pretty solid. The guy that was having clicking sounds and a problem with the lose drive tray probably had a bad unit (it actually sounds as if the two problems were related), and the two I bought were whisper quiet while playing. These guys will play DVD's, VCD's, CD's, and for the heck of it, I threw in a CD-I of Ghost----it even played that! The unit features Zoom (not very common on lower end models), adjustable black levels, and too many other features to list. The one complaint I do have is that the back skip button is a bit flakey....some times you have to give it a "double click" to skip to the last track instead of the beginning of the current one. Not a big deal (I had a Sony CD player that did the same thing), but still a tad annoying.

Strength:

Easy to use, excelent video quality

Weakness:

Cheesy remote

I like this DVD player very much, but I have had problems playing the Abyss: Special Edition.

On the second disk the player locks up when I go to the Pseudopod multiangle sequence.

Also, when moving around in menus, the player puts out a loud popping (or crackling) noise through my speakers (never happened on *any* other DVD player on the same system).

The other problem disk was Avia: Guide to Home Theater. On this disk, the menus were not properly visible. I had to guess what was selected (again, this DVD worked fine in other players, including the Apex).

These exact problems also happened on a SD-2200.

Other that that, the visual quality during movies are fantastic, especially on the Matrix (a generally dark movie).
