excellent picture quality, and remote! I did have to have it serviced for the audio drop out issue with non motorola dsp's (I have a sony 925) I works great, no problems, although it doesn't seem to play VCD's (not an issue for most people) it does have a neat zoom feature not seen in any other manufacturer's DVD.

I bought the Toshiba SD-2180 from One Call at a very attractive price, ($166 less than "Best Buy." Or is that highest buy?) Coupled with my new JVC-884, I am very happy.
At this point I have not heard any audio drop outs, but dcalled Toshiba to see if they could tell me what Serial Numbers may have the problem. No luck, but they said anyone can send their unit back to Toshiba for a Software upgrade to fix the problem. They feel the problem is in the digital interface between the 2108 and some receivers.

It seems to me they should have good manufacturing records to track which units have which versions of the software, or there may be some sequence of buttons to push to get a read out of that information.

I have to agree with the positive reviews preceeding mine, that it does it job very well. It may just sell a number of big screen TV's, but I'm going to wait for a reasonable priced HDTV display.

I give the unit 4 stars because of the lack of good customer orientation on the interface / audio drop out problem.

The SD 2108 exhibited outstanding video quality. However, my unit which was hooked up to a Yamaha RXV 992 through its coaxial connections, exhibited unacceptable audio dropout on every disc played.

Picture is great, sometimes almost looks 3 dimensional.Sound is a bit better than my Sherwood CD changer. A bit more detailed, stronger bass. Price is great $333. Remote is easy to use.

Is anyone having sucess using the 2108 with the Sony 30ES, HK AVR65, or Yamaha 795 ? How's the audio dropout issue remote capatibility and Music sound ?
Thanks for any info.

I just purchased the 2108 from One-Call. The service was great, and it arrived very quickly. I also purchased the Sony 30ES receiver along with it. The picture was fantastic, probably the best I have ever had on my TV. The DVD's in dolby digital were out of this world.........And then came the audio dropouts. First just a couple here and there, then more and more and more and more, etc. There is no way on earth I could live with this, and I have to say I am very sorry because this seems like a fantastic player. I can't believe Toshiba would ever let a product out of the factory with a problem like this. By the way I was using a coaxial cable for the digital connection. I sent it back and One-Call is sending me the new JVC 500(I think that is the model number), it has pretty much the same bells and whistles the Toshiba has. Anyone who has the Sony 30ES receiver beware. I would give this unit 5 stars for price and performance if it worked as it should, but would like to give it zero if I could for making me go through all of this just to watch a few movies.

I have had the SD-2108 for about 1 month. I have nothing but praise for this device. Video quality is perfect, and I like the enhanced black level option. I have not had even ONE audio dropout. I compared the Toshiba to the Sony players (300, 500) and I can tell you that the Toshiba is equal or better in audio and video quality, and for less money. CDs sound great, by the way.

I recently grabbed one of these players (along with a buddy of mine), and we both have been very impressed by this player. I used to own a Pioneer DVL-90 and in comparison... this player smokes it !! at a THIRD of the price ! I am running it with the Color-Stream option into a Toshiba CN32H95 direct view monitor. To say it is a knock-out would be an understatement. The famous "Diva Scene" from The Fifth Element is an absolute show stopper. The black levels, blues and whites are about as good as I would expect, and had a (rather jaded) friend of mine gushing that he couldn't believe how good it was. The audio ? first rate ! I have a very revealing audio system, and the Toshiba has proven to be excellent in playing out the dynamics and subleties of various movies.Ergonomics are great, far better than the Elite it replaced (which I think stunk from this perspective), slow motion, still, and zoom all function as they should. Only quibble ?? build quality... it is a bantam weight, and the box is nothing more than pressed aluminum, however, at this price point, I wouldn't expect a 35lb beast.
Well done Toshiba for bringing EXCELLENT performance to the real world.

I have owned this DVD player for about 5 weeks. I have had zero, no that is ZERO problems with it. The picture is great, and the audio is outstanding.I am using this both as a DVD player and as a CD Transport. I have this player connected to a B&K Ref 10 Pre-amp with a Transparent Coax cable.

Hopefully within the next couple of years I can use those Component Outputs!!!
This is a great purchase.
(If you don't want DTS go with the 2008, it can be had for under $300)

I'll save the 5th star for the higher end Meridian/Theta Digital products.

Bought this baby two weeks before Christymas, at Brandsmart, for 350 bucks. A few days later, it was sold out. Home Theater Technology magazine gave it a raving review. One friend of mine was so impressed, that bought the 2008 for himself. Now, let me give you guys my impressions: 1- The main difference of this unit and the little cheaper 2008 is the DTS capabilities and composite output. Same audio and video quality. At first, I bought the 2008 and asked the salesperson if there were differences in audio/video quality from the 2008, 2108 and the 3108. No, he said, but the 3108 has Dolby Digital in it(DTS too) and the layer change on the 2108 is better than the 2008. Tried at home and it is TRUE. Watch TOMORROW NEVER DIES. After the chopper/byke sequence, Bond and Lin are taking a shower toghether. At the end of that scene there is a fade to black and a barely visible pause on the 2008. The same scene on the 2108 is just a fade out. No pause. Totally smooth transiction from layers(same DVDs fit two layers on one side, so you dont have to flip discs, one of the major problems that doomed Laser Discs) If You dont care for on board Dolby Digital, than skip the 3108 and buy the 2108.
2- Smooth and clean audio. VERY good CD player also. Picture qualty is on par with FAR more expensive units(I saw them) Colors are not oversatureted or anything. Just plain beautiful. This palyers pass the Pluge test from the VIDEO ESSENTIALS DVD. I particulary like the ENHANCED BLACK option on this players. I now finally have true blacks on my movies(that adds depth to the image, making it look more 3-D)
3- On board DTS, when it finally catches on.
4- Only one caveat: This players are WAY TOO LIGHT.
Cant wait to buy myself a TOSHIBA big screen TV now. DVD deserves it. I friendly recommend these players. Happy new-year.

This is a good player for the price. I sent it back for these reasons, the bottom of the unit has very few flat spots for placing anti-vibration cones, even with cones I saw a *lot* of jitter when I played a video test disc on it (61" TV, good quality interconnects), it can't weigh more than five pounds. In other words it's very cheaply constructed. I'm waiting for the Sony DVP 7700.
