Just received this player for christmas. Audio/Video portions of this unit are excellent. I have heard of certain problems ie. audio dropouts, but have not experienced any. For the price this is a great unit.

I read up on all the sub-$400 DVD players and this one won my heart. It has a great feature list, and received an excellent review in the November '98 Home Theater Magazine. Unfortunately, it seems that all the DVD players in this price range have at least one small flaw experienced by some, so I had to weigh that into the equation. This player's flaw is the now-famed audio dropout in AC3 on some receivers. But Toshiba will fix it at their expense, so I bought the unit with full knowledge of this. Other than that, it is the best piece of equipment I've put in my rack in a long while! Great picture, great sound, easy to use, tons of great features (true black, zoom, a-b repeat, wide array of outputs including component video and DTS). All in all I am very impressed with this product and would highly recommend it to anyone willing to deal with the fact that they may have to send it to Toshiba if they encounter the dropout problem. If it weren't for this issue, I'd give it 5 stars.

System: Denon AVR-3200, 4 NHT SuperOne XUs, NHT Audio Center 1, NHT SW2pi,Toshiba SD2108 DVD, Denon DP26 record player, Older RCA VHS deck, with
Monster cable/connectors and optical Toslink/SVideo for the DVD.

This is my first "mini" system and I researched it both in person and on the
web. For the Toshiba, am using the optical toslink and SVideo for audio/video. The Denon has all the jacks and I highly recommend this receiver. Plus this combo is supposed to be DTS ready, if this medium ever shows up. Have had absolutely no problems with the "drop outs" mentioned in other reviews. Perhaps this is a function of the type of hook up or perhaps the receiver. Absolutely no hint of dropouts, period. Crystal clear on both DVD and regular cd audio. Very easy to use remote. Also, right now Toshiba/Warner Home Video is offering 5 free movies and a handful of web rentals with the purchase of this unit. Get the coupon from your dealer, as they do not accept copies. A great little unit which makes dvd live up to all the advance billing.

PS: Purchased the whole system from Greg at The Sound Approach. Factory authorized dealer (including Denon & Toshiba), great prices and perfect follow thru/delivery! Highly recommended!!

Have watched about 10 movies on the 2108 ,everyone of them has some audio dropout. I'm using it with a Sony str-DA30es and audio is thru a fiber optic cable. Viedo is great and music cd's play without any problems .I will return it to the dealer to get dropout fix or replace with a different model. It could be a five star product if not for the dropout.

I bought this player last September. I experienced the audio drop-out problem on most of the movies I watched. I called Toshiba about it and they said they could not do anything for me because they did not have any other record of such a problem. I kept the player and found out later that many other people were having the same problem. I called Toshiba to be told that they now recognized a problem and they would send me a refurbished one if I sent mine back to them. I really just wanted mine repaired but they said that was not possible. So I sent mine back and three weeks later they sent me a refurbished player. Now, I have a player that has more problems than the one that I sent them. It has the audio drop-out problem and widescreen movies fit up my 4:3 screen because the video is stretched vertically. I called Toshiba and told them that I wanted a new player because of all the hassle they have caused. They told me no way. They could only send me a refurbished product, that is company policy. Toshiba definitely needs to improve its quality control processes. They should not send a product to market that is not compatible with many products already in the marketplace. My first player performed well with the exception of the audio drop-out. But after my problems with customer service I have a hard time recommending this player or any Toshiba product.

I just got the SD-2108 DVD for Christmas and have mated it to my Rotel RSX-965 receiver using the coaxial digital connect. So far I have not experienced any of the problems that I have heard about: no audio dropouts, no problems with A-B repeat, and finally no problems with the DVD locking up the receiver's ability to switch to the tuner, VCR, etc.
Overall I have been pretty happy with it. Video is very good and I like the fact that it is upgrade ready with its component video outputs and the DD/DTS signal output capability. Because I am using the digital audio link, I am using the Rotel's D-A converter when playing CDs which I imagine is better than what is in the Toshiba.

Please Beware:
Do not purchase a Toshiba SD-2108! I have one, and I have been lucky because I have had no problems with it (I have a Yamaha receiver). But a friend of mine who has a Sony str50es is having the same problems as everyone else. It is definitely safer to buy any of the other brands that have DTS and DD. At least for now.

I have had every possible problem with this player and warn anyone who thinks of buying it. I bought it in early novemeber and it has been hell since then. I had the famous "audio drop-outs". I called in mid december to find out what was wrong and I was instructed to ship it back to Toshiba but had to wait til after the new year. It took Toshiba about 2 weeks to get it back to me. The one they sent was a refurbished model and the remote was scratched all over and pieces were rattling inside of it. I was then told to ship it back for a brand new model. This time I was sent back a 3006. One of Toshiba's original models. This of course didn't pass a DTS signal and had no optical output. I was told the manager in charge of this (Dana W) hit the wrong button. So now I have to wait til i get a call tag to send my player back and now Toshiba is closed for inventory so it will be at least a week til I get a DVD player. My DVD has spent more time in a FedEx truck then it has in my apartment. I have asked Toshiba to simply refund my money so I can buy aplayer that will work and have competent employees. Buy at your own risk, becuase if anything ever goes wrong it is going to be a lot of fun to get it resolved.

I purchased the 2108 from OneCall for $340. Out of all the players in this price range, I think the Toshiba has the most drop dead beautiful picture on my Sony 46 inch rear projector that I have ever seen. I own a DSS and the picture was clearly a step ahead especially in low light scenes. Unfortunately, I noticed a few negatives. This player does the dual layer change on a disc with an abrupt pause. Go to the end of Chapter 13 in Armageddon and it will pause briefly when Chapter 14 starts w. the cosmonaut. Other problems are digital artifacts in the lower letterbox area when watching anamorphic widescreens. These artifacts look as though subtitles are going to pop up in the black area and are brief but distracting. Check it out with the The 5th Element. In the Nucleolab chapter and the Diva chapter 26, one can see these artifacts. This is due to the conversion of the anamorphic image to a 4:3 tv. I thought the sound was outstanding in dolby surround over my Kenwood THX receiver. I like the remote although backlighting will help. I tested against the Pioneer DV 414 and RCA Divx 5301 (not mine, my friend bought it). The Toshiba works flawlessly on plain widescreens and pan and scan movies. If you don't watch widescreens this is the player of your dreams. As for me, I sent it back and will wait for the Toshiba 3109 to come in. Overall 3 1/2 stars.

I have had the 2108 for about 2 months without any problems. I am using an Onkyo TXDS 555S reciever with the new motorola chip which is probably why I havent had any drop out problems. DVD play picture quality is immaculate. Regular CD's play very clean, I think even better than my Onkyo D220 6 disc changer. For about $300 plus shipping I couldn't be any happier, I'm just praying that I don't have any of the problems everyone has been talking about.
