Strength:

DTS & DD outputs, 4x Zoom, Nice menu,

Weakness:

Noisy Disc Tray, Bad downconversion

This is my 2nd DVD Player, and while it is an improvement over my 1st, I can't wait to buy a new progressive player. The main weakness is the bad downconversion on my 32" Sony Trinitron. Don't get me wrong, the picture is still outstanding, just not as good as Pioneers or Sonys. But, I purchased this for about $180, so I'm actually extremely happy with it. This will do until progressive players get cheaper.

Strength:

Awesome picture, Screaming crystal clear sound

Weakness:

What weaknesses? the remote is fine!

I did lots of research before buying this player, read the reviews and everyone loves it so i got it.
Now this being my first DVD player, i was absolutely blown away when i set this beast up and used it. I can't compare it to others as this is the only one i've used, but i can say that the switch from VHS to DVD is a no-contest.
The picture this player shoots out is unbelievable, sharpness, clear, bright and beautiful. The sound, well, i only have a normal 2 channel stereo to connect it to, and on that, its sounds INCREDIBLE! i never knew my stereo could sound like that, the sounds are amazing, this player is superb!
I have only played one title so far, its meant to cause problems with some players, (The Matrix) and it ran PERFECTLY on the 2109, and i am sure every other title i get will also run to perfection.

And i'm only using the composite cables that came with it and connecting it to a 2 channel stereo (with the cool virtual surround sound on), imagine s-video/component connectors, and a digital receiver, WOW!!!

People complain about the remote, get a grip! the remote is cool! its just that you try and use it with your eyes closed, i mean i've had it for 2 days i already know the buttons off by heart, and have no trouble with the remote.
Another complain, this player is noisy!???? what the hell, do you have a bionic ear on steroids or somethng? The only time you hear noise is when it loads the disc, during movie playback you could hear a pin drop!

The player plays cds back with really nice quality, i think it even sounds better than a normal cd player. The user interface is really nice and easy, it even has a nice DVD logo when you turn it on, and it loads fast too. There's simply nothing i can say is wrong with this player even if i try to think of something.. the only problem i would say, is the front panel doesn't have enough buttons, like if you lost your remote, you would barely be able to use the player.

So everyone thinking of getting this player, don't hold back. This player makes no noise so whoever said its noisy, then they simply have problems. And the remote looks nice and modern, and its fine! you get used it straight away.

Overall, Toshiba 2109, AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just Purchased the SD1200 at The New York Times Buyer's Club (http://www.accompany.com/nytimes) where buyers team up to drive the price of consumer items down by placing large orders. NYT is currently running a promotion, which allows for an additional 20% off the already discounted price. Got my unit for $152 including taxes and S&H. While on the NYT's site type "Group NYT" in the Promotion Code Box to receive your 20% discount. For shoppers looking for the value, This makes the SD1200 the best DVD value around. This offer may not run indefinetely.

The new model replacing 2109 id SD1200. This one plays vcd as well, not that it has much use for, but hey, I do get vcd from friends every now and then...

Like many others, I ma very pleased with this product. There have been no glitches whatsoever. I have it hooked up with my Harman Kardon AVR300 and mission 773 and 77c speakers. It is a starter's system and so far I am enjoying every minute of it. All I need to do now is set up a home theatre in the basement...

Strength:

Never skips, OK remote (It's not bad, so quit saying it is!) Cheap

Weakness:

None (maybe a little on the remote)

Great dvd player- got mine for 199.99. I've never had it skip, and I think the remote is OK, because it's small. I would highly recommend buying this dvd player, you'll save loads of money and they also play the same as those 1000.00 dvd players, they just have much more features. Also some word of advice: never buy a Zwnith dvd player, they rush on making them and re extremly crapy. (Except the first 10 movies).

Strength:

Amazing picture and sound, easy interface

Weakness:

Layer transitions (normal, but still a little annoying to some)

I have had this player for three months now and I love it! Everything, besides layer transitions (happens on most players), has worked perfectly and in outstanding visual and audio clarity. The best part of my Toshiba purchase was the deal I received from 800.com. I received the player, one movie from their store, and another 5 movies (that free deal you see in the electronic store advertisements) for $226.90. You can't beat that!

The only problem I have experienced, is a jumping around on "Enemy of the State." However, this was a rental disc and may have been defective and/or dirty. Who knows...

I recommend this player, now I think its called the SD-1200 or something like that.

Strength:

Incredible value - Zoom Feature, Easy to use

Weakness:

Placement of buttons on remote - no optical out

I bought the SD-1200 model which replaces the 2109. There are a ton of refurbished 2109's which is the same as the 1200, a non refurbished 2109 has some kind of chip problem with it. I paid $199.00 at Sound Advice in FL and I can't be more happy. I researched extensively and there is nothing better in this price range. ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM. This is the feature that puts it over the top. You can enlarge the screen, most players is this range do not have this. I have a 60" screen and no players will will the screen even in a 16X9 format. You can zoom up 1 click on the toshiba, loose a little quality and almost fill a 60" screen. I always use S-video out and the picture is awesome. There is no optical out but the coax out is digital and supposed to be better sounding than fiber optic. Idon;t think you can tell the difference. Make sure you receiver has a coax in otherwise you will have to use the rca outs and you will oly decode pro-logic. The displayy is easy to use, I never read the manual and I can do everything. The remote buttons are in the wrong place. The setup button is on the top, stop and play on the bottom and the disc part in the middle. This is my only complaint. Buy this DVD ot pay more for another Toshiba!

Strength:

Fairly quick for switching between tracks, Component Video output (which is pretty standard nowadays).

Weakness:

No optical digital out, can't read CDR's, very loud spinning noise anytime a disc is playing

As has been said several times, this unit is fantastic for the price. This unit would serve anybody just getting into home theater very nicely.

The picture quality is very good, even using the RCA video output. And even more exceptional is the sound, though this has probably more to do with the quality of the receiver and speakers being used.

I would stronly urge people away from buying this drive if they plan to use it for music (i.e. audio CD's). The spinning sound made when a disc is being read is very noticeable during anything soft (same goes for quiet dialogues during movie playback). As a fan of softer music such as jazz and early classical, I've found that I can no longer bring myself to listen to music with this drive. However, I have noticed that this spinning sound exists on nearly all "budget" DVD players (including the Pioneer DV525 and Panasonic AU-120.

The lack of ability to read CDR's also frustrates me. For those needing to read CDR's, go with the Pioneer DV525 (which is pretty much the same player, except for slower reading times).

I'm giving the drive 5 stars for rating (it can be gotten for under $200 now), and a 3 overall, because overall means to me that it should be compared to all DVD players.

Strength:

Excellent price. Made in Japan quality. Slim remote. Nice picture quality. Full size cabinet. Lots of features and adjustments (i.e color stream, multiple fast forward and rewind speeds, picture zoom, bitstream indicator, time remaining display, etc.)

Weakness:

Remote buttons are small and hard to read. No optical out.

This was my second DVD player in a month as I was dissapointed with my first DVD player from another manufacturer. This unit will not dissapoint. It is loaded with features and build quality is second to none. The digital coaxial cable works just fine.

Strength:

Performance, Value, Zoom

Weakness:

What else...the remote bites

Looks and sounds great. Plays everything I throw at it. Great entry level unit. I programmed my Marantz remote to control it now and tossed the original remote in the drawer.
I waffled about getting the Panasonic 120 but decided I liked to use the zoom occasionally for some movies. When I upgrade in a couple of years this will serve me well to use on the other TV.
