Strength:

Able to discs that my Panasonic A110 was unable to read.

Weakness:

The remote is not as user-friendly as other remotes.
Their is no optical output.

Weakness:

Noisy drive mechanism. Dinky remote

Has anyone noticed the noise associated with the drive mechanism of this player? It appears to give very good video/audio performance, however, during quiet passages you can hear it humming. What gives? With all the work I have invested to quiet AC sources, remove hum, isolate sources..to have the noisy drive mechanism is kind of a bummer. Are there any other players in the sub-$500 range that have the features and performance but are quieter?

Can't play VCDs and CDRs

I bought the Toshiba 2109 from onsale.com for $223 shipped a little over a month ago. You can probably get it for about $200 shipped now though...
This is a great DVD player for it's price and I haven't had any problems with the many movies I have watched so far. Although this is a good DVD player I regret not getting the 3109 instead for a little bit more money. Why? Because I plan on buying the PS2 when it comes out and it has pretty much all the same features as the DVD player inlcuding AC3 and DTS compatibility. With the 3109 it would at least have the capability of playing VCDs and I think CDRs over the PS2...
Oh well

Strength:

Price, good picture. Sound is good.

Weakness:

It stops while playing the disc Hercules. Also had problem shutting off the commentary on Austin Powers2. I took it back.

I'm not sure if I got a lemon. But b/c it kept getting stuck on a DVD and the commentary problem mentioned above. I took it back and am looking for another player. The store, Kroger, was out of any other players.

Strength:

DD and DTS Output, Component Out

Weakness:

Remote

Toshiba is noted for their excellent DVD players and this player is no exception. Picked one up for $239.95 at a local retailer. Many reviews call this a good, basic, entry level DVD player but what more could you want? The best value in DVD players on the market today. Absolutely no weaknesses. Color rendition(esp. with component output) and sound are superb. Keep in mind that most lockups on DVDs are software related not hardware. At least with the latest generation of players.

Strength:

Nice features at a nice price.

Weakness:

Fast-forwarding and rewinding confuse the player as to where in the movie it is.

Generally a very nice player but the fast-forward, rewind bug drives me crazy. The faster you FF or rewind the more the player gets confused about where in the movie it is when you go back to Play mode. My Panasonic A110 always picks up at the correct point in the movie.
Also, I've hit Open-Close on the remote accidentally enough times that I'd prefer it weren't on the remote or could somehow disable it.

Strength:

Price(big factor for a lot of newcomers), picture, easy to use.

Weakness:

mysterious beep, Not CD-R compatable, remote(if u use it).

A wise investment for a person looking to begin buying dvd's without forking out lots of money. It does play VCD's (mine does anyhow) The phantom beep will dissapear if you turn off the remote confimation function in your setup menu, i havent had one since. A few minor things as mentioned by other reviewers but acceptable due to the savings. I would reccomend it to anybody. The remote is not very exciting at all but can be overcome by having a universal remote for the amp that controls all.
