Strength:
It is a unit that allows the user to pass up the previews etc. through chapter forward. Most units will not allow this and put a slash-circle on the screen making you watch the ads. This unit would also let me go directly to the second episode in a multi episode disc like the Sopranos. Neither my Awiai, Panasonic not Sanyo will let me do this.
Weakness:
Electronic board failed at eight months (about 12 discs played), repaired in eight long weeks under warranty. Turntable failed after eighteen months (about 40 discs played) and unit was thrown out. A two disc full featured medium cost player. This unit was put in a vacation home and played very little. It was unplugged when we were not at the home. |

This product is a waste of your money I advise not getting it. The gears are almost all striped but otherwise it worked fine besides all the constant freezing. |

Strength:
Great picture quality (even with RCA video cable connection); HDCD support; can play VCDs on CDRW format (despite what the manual says ;) Very reliable as well
Weakness:
no backlit display for remote (which is no biggie though ;) Enhanced black tends to make the overall picture too dark - but again no problem - just leave it on normal ! :) I just picked up this unit a few days ago and I must say it is one of the best units out. Not only is it reliable and VERY quiet, but the picture quality is outstanding on both Svideo and RCA video connectons. Built in DTS is a plus for those who have receivers that are compatible and the two disc tray is a nice addition. HDCD is a plus as well and even got some of my home made VCDs from home videos playing on the unit on CDRW (Memorex) media (haven't tried normal CDRs yet...) The only minor grips I have with the unit is that the remote does not have an eject feature button and is not backlit, like my old Sony unit had. Also, I have had no luck playing Super Video CDs (SVCD) with the unit, but I'm more in it for the DVD ^_~. Anyway, a GREAT unit - awesome sound and picture, most definitely one of the best DVD players in this price range (and even rivals the higher end units, too!) (picked it up for $245 at mobshop.com w/ free shipping) Similar Products Used: Sony 500D |

All I have to say is THANK YOU to everyone submitting reviews. I have read each one thoroughly and found a way to get the SD1600 very very cheap. The holidays are a time of giving and 800.com really really came through with such a good deal, I couldn't refuse this. Thanks everyone. Keep in mind, do a lot of research on the net before settling for 1 price, there is always a better deal out there, you just need to look. Trust me, 800.com had this listed for 179 and i was able to get the price down to 129, not to mention the rebate from pepsi i still have coming to me which will lower this price yet another $15. |

Strength:
Film like picture quality, Parallel video outputs, 4x Zoom, clear distinctive sound and dual trays. Rock solid error correction and playback.
Weakness:
Doesn't play cd-r or cd-r/w. Split second pause on layer change (This is normal for DVD players) I have had the time and opportunity to evaluate a wide selection of mid-priced DVD players. I have been using the Proscan 8680Z for about two (2) years and have absolutely no complaints regarding picture quality and the Thompson quality error correction. I've since been in the market for a second player. Similar Products Used: Samsung 611, 711, 812, N2000, Proscan 8680Z, Sony 550, Hitachi 305, 505 |

Strength:
Excellent sound & picture. Reliable!
Weakness:
Joystick on remote can be a bit finicky. After suffering with the JVC (which turned out to be a total piece of junk) for a little over year, the Toshiba is like a breath of fresh air. It is a bit sad, but just the joy of being able to make it through an entire movie without having the player lock up or pixelize on you is very nice. Similar Products Used: JVC XV-D701BK |

Picture sharpness
Weakness:
Loading errors with new DVD`s,shimmering, remote control. I bought this unit about 2 weeks ago and I liked the picture right off the bat. After a couple days of using it,it started having problems loading brand new DVD`s.I solved the problem by using the number 2 tray. But it still had a problem of shimmering now and then. When I first started setting up the player,I noticed that the remote is (PATHETIC).This has to be one of the worst remotes I have ever used.I realize I could have got a lemon, but my experience with it made me NOT want another Toshiba product. Strength:
Have had the player for a bit less than 3 months, and so far everything is great. I'm very pleased.
Weakness:
Only what everyone is saying: the remote's a little clumsy to use. Then again, I'm pretty clumsy myself. I really Love this player. It's more than I'd hope a dvd player would be. I especially like the zoom. Similar Products Used: None |
