Strength:

Video image and audio quality, relentless error tracking, HDCD, output compatibility

Weakness:

Slight delays, manual

Superior in every way to the A-110. Video is very clean even in zoom mode, enhanced black feature works well. Frame rate counter is nice for performance nuts but really, what it comes down to is performance through the layers and the 2200 doesn't flinch. Sometimes there is a delay at the onset and more than once I've lost my menu cursor but I believe now the problem is in the software. Audio through D-Digital is fanastic, very clean and as of this writing I have not tried (nor do I own) an HDCD.

Price was right through egghead.com, unit was easy to install and remote is fairly obvious....buttons are larger and more spread out, joy stick is funky but necessary, I guess. Overall, very pleased....nice to have a fourth gen. player and I think Toshiba has the right combination of features and quality.

Strength:

Dual disc option for price range of player, connection options, sound options, clear picture...

Weakness:

None to speak of yet.

Great DVD Player for the money. I was very impressed with the picture quality and all the connections and options for the price. I was debating going with a more expensive unit with a five disc changer, but the two disc is suitable for my current needs. I can not wait to upgrade my receiver now. I currently have a Denon with two towers and, two 12" subs hooked to it and that adds alot, but I still must get a surround sound receiver. The TV just does not cut it for front and center channels.

Strength:

On-board Dolby Digital Decoder, Awesome Video, Good Audio, HDCD, Price for Performance/Features

Weakness:

Remote is awkward, Dual Disc Setup

I picked up this player after returning a Zenith that I had purchased and was thoroughly dissapointed with.

I can't say the same about this player. I love it! The video playbakc of every movie I've played so far (about 15, including The Matrix) has been perfect. I love all the outputs on this player. It has enough expansion and compatability for whatever is developed in the future.

The only major drawback for me is the dual-disc system. I bought this player for the features ont the two discs. It was $50 more than the single disc Toshiba w/o optical output and dobly decoder. I think the dual disc system might be more susceptible to breaking than single disc setup. I guess Toshiba has done this with other players, and no complaints so far. So, I'm guessing this is a safe design.

The remote takes a little bit to get used to and is big. But, this is a very useful remote with no useless buttons (the Zenith remotes stink). Just takes time to get used to.

Overall, I love this player. I would buy another Toshiba product in a heartbeat (my first Toshiba). Their quality and craftsmanship is unbelievably good.

Love this player, great picture, features etc.

Weakness:

Like the fellow before me, I am having lines horizontal line problems with composite video in use. But the rest of the time picture is amasing, and much better then using s-video, goin to have to try another unit and hpoe it is not indicative of all 2200's....

Highly recommended as has best picute for the price - of course minus the line issue! a5 stars on all if problem goes away with new unit...

Strength:

Dual Tray, zoom function(s), great picture quality

Weakness:

remote joystick is horrible, slow access time, dual tray is a dubious value, bulky

This is probably one of the best dvd players with built in dolby digital decoding for its price. I really wanted the Sony dvp-560, but settled for this Toshiba 2200 because it was so cheap. However, after using this dvd player for a few months now, I am a little disappointed. When I read the review on CNET.com that the remote was excellent, I decided that this dvd player was going to be comparable to the 560. To my dismay, this wasn't the case - the joystick is very inaccurate and in all a big headache. I have also own a Sony dvp-330. The access time on the Sony is much faster than the Toshiba's. Moreover, the toshiba gets kinda tricky when you want subtitles. You have to push the subtitle button then use the joystick to get to turn it on. On the Sony, it is much more simplistic (ie push it once for on,and then again to turn it off). In all, GET SONY PRODUCTS!!

P.S. I didn't think the remote was that big of a deal at first. Now I think the ease of use of a remote control is crucial.

Strength:

DTS. Optical/S-Video/Component outputs. Dual-disc tray. Plays audio CDs very well. Remote control works well from different angles.

Weakness:

Can't switch video modes unless you stop the DVD playing. Remote isn't great, but better than a lot of others I've seen.

This is an awesome DVD player for the value. Using the optical output, the sound is incredible. Sounds VERY good playing CDs. The remote isn't great, but its not that bad. It would be better if it was backlit. DTS, DD, what else could you want?

Go get this DVD player, its awesome. Then go rent 'The Patriot' or 'The Matrix'. It is absolutely incredible! This product (combined with my HT system) truly has brought back the enjoyment in watching movies at home.

I managed to purchase this Toshiba SD-2200 from mercata.com for $206 with shipping. I had the 20% off the $245 powerbuy price at the time, so I jumped on it!

Boy am I glad I did. This player is awesome. I've thrown quite a few discs at it in the past 2 months I've had it and it's never once had a problem with any of them! Layer changes are quick (noticeable only if they happen during the movie play time) and only result in about a 1/2 second pause.

First off though, my home theatre setup is becoming more aged every day. I've had it since Dolby Pro-Logic sound first came out, including the mitsubishi VCR that costed $450 at the time that would decode that kind of audio stream. I don't have a Dolby Digital/DTS decoder on my receiver either, since that is also aged. :) What I really like is how well this player will decode Dolby Digital 5.1 into Pro-Logic. I must say it's a noticeable improvement over VCR tapes. Those of us with just a Dolby Pro-Logic receiver are most likely very happy with this setup. I don't feel at this point in time I even need to go to Dolby Digital/DTS, although I will probably make the jump sometime in the future.

The load times on the DVDs are fast, and the picture is just unbelievable. I was originally using RCA outs for about 2 weeks there and the picture was very good for what was coming out of them. I eventually switched over to S-Video because there was a slight greenish tint in real dark scenes of some movies. The S-Video cable took care of this.

I have no complaints with this DVD player at all, and there's also another neat thing it will do: Play your VCD's in one sitting. :) You can program it to play through your 1st VCD, then automatically switch to the 2nd VCD (all of which takes about 5 seconds or less to switch trays).

I have noticed some of the reviewers have said that CD-R's and CD-RW's will not play. This is not entirely true. The part about the CD-R's is true, I havn't been able to get them to work, BUT...CD-RW's DO play. I'm using Acer 74min cds if anyone is interested. They are working just fine with the player.

All I have to say though, is that for $206 this was definitely well worth the money. Much more than I had ever expected and it totally fills my expectations.

& the Toshiba SD2200 YES!!

I am blown away by my overall system. The Toshiba added the final piece of the puzzle and it fit very, very well.

So far the unit has performed flawlessy. No hitches or glitches. The remote is fine. I could have bought the SD1200 because I do not need the 5.1 out of the player--my Yammy handles that part. I heard the 2200 was somewhat more solid than the 1200 and I thought the dual tray might come in handy. That's why I went this route.

By the way, I'm using simple RCA coax cable for the bitstream and video; no problems. I originally had Monster Interlink-100, but I took it back. These cables give me the exact same picture & sound, to my eyes and ears anyway.

A Magnificent piece of Video Equipment !

If you can find this below the generally available price of $ 300, you will have done good, and will be more than happy with your choice.

A feel very lucky in that I was able to steal it off UBid on a slow nite, for $219, shipping included.

I will promise you this - At $300 US, this unit is STILL wonderful.

Buy this Toshiba and laugh at your friends with their Sony's and JVC's, etc.

Sometimes the unit bends verticle lines about an inch from the top of the black bar in 16:9 format

I have been comparing this player with several on the market in this price range. This player offers more features for its price. My only complaint is the slight bending to the right of horizontal lines where the black edge meets the top of the movie. I especially noticed this when I watched Pleasantville. It is eveident in high contrast situations and does not occur constantly. I brought the Pleasantville dvd to the store and tryed it on as many players as I could. All of them did this somewhat, except some of the higher-priced players over $800.00. The Panasonic had the least amount of picture distortion. Overall, the Panasonic RV65 had the clearest picture in this price range. However, for the $240.00 I paid for the Toshiba, I am being probably being too picky! As far as the sound goes, wow! Much better than the Panasonic! The Panasonic seems to muffle the dynamic range and impact of the surround sound. The Toshiba really adds life to dvd sound effects, making me jump in scenes due to its realistic sound. The Panasonic did not. Additionally, the Toshiba plays the 24bit/96k audiodisks much more clearly and full of life. A good bargain for the money. Too bad I could not get the picture quality of the Panasonic combined with the Audio of the Toshiba!
