Toshiba SD2300 DVD player has a new feature called NUON compatibility. We are starting to see the game consoles and DVD players merge. PS2 plays DVD discs, but now DVD players starting to be able to allow you to play games.

SD2300 is very similar to SD1600 in terms of basic features.

Toshiba is well-known for excellent DVD players that produce very good picture and sound. SD2300 is no exception in this department.

SD2300 has the composite, S-video outputs and ColorStream component jacks. The best way to connect DVD player to TV is to use component-video outputs but even S-video output looks great on this player.

“Parallel Vidoe Output” allows you to watch the movie on several TVs/Monitors at once by connecting to them using S-Video, component (ColorStream) and composite outs.

As other Toshiba models, the player features the onscreen bit-rate meter, which fluctuates from less than 1 to 10, and although it's useless, it's nice to look at it once in a while.

PLUGE allows the player to pass “blacker-than-black” signals to your TV than needed, eliminating the gray color in places where the black color should be. All Toshiba DVD players have a video black-level enhancement mode that you can access from the menu.

The SD2300 is Dolby Digital and Digital Theater Sound (DTS) compatible. The player has other “standard” features, present on virtually all DVD players today: parental control, CD-audio playback, camera angle select, multi-language and multi-subtitle select, Spatializer N-2-2 Virtual Surround Sound.

It also has some advanced features (“trick play”): x2 playback, 1/8x, 1/4x, 1/2x, x2, x8, x20 Forward and Reverse scan, 16-Power Picture Zoom, Time Search, Strobe.

In addition, the player features HDCD® Decoding and Precision Filtering – the ability to play HDCD-enhanced (20-bit) CDs. HDCD feature more detailed and realistic sound.

“Virtual Light Machine” can be activated during CD-Audio playback and displays up to 100 unique patterns that pulse and change in sync with the music. If you ever used WinAmp MP3 player on your computer with visualization plug-ins, you know what I mean.

NUON

The SD2300 has a 128-bit Nuon media processor that allows it to perform slow motion in forward and reverse direction in “fluid motion” (not as a series of “still frames”). You cannot find another player in this price range to be able to do this.
Note: Samsung DVDN2000 DVD player also features NUON support.

And in future you should be able to access interactive games and other interactive features (you have to use the NUON-compatible discs, which, as Toshiba promises, will soon be produced by Hollywood studios).

The front panel of the player has jacks for special NUON game controllers in anticipation of NUON-based games (existing games will be converted to NUON).

The onscreen context menus and virtual remote significantly simplify operation.

The remote size is OK, but you have to point the remote directly to the player for it to work. The button layout is good - Left/Right and Up/Down buttons are centrally placed, with the Enter button in the middle.

For $269.95 at YourInsider.com, SD2300 is a bargain, according to what it can do for the money. The NUON is something new and very useful. If you want these features you can either get SD2300 or pay much more for another model.

Strength:

NUON-capable (never tried it), Background Capture function

Weakness:

Everything (this player is junk)

I bought this DVD player because it was new, top of the line, and a Toshiba, which all my friends told me was the best brand (I had been opting for Sony). When i saw the SD-2300 had all those awesome extra features and was NUON-capable, I bit on February first. Unfortunately, I didn't discover this website until February 17th. Well, using this machine during the majority of February, I experienced lengthy pauses at layer changes, pixellation, lock-ups, mysterious video noise on hi-definition digitally filmed movies, and numerous other problems. Something bad always had to happen with every DVD I played. Finally I found this site and I read other reviews on this product and realized I'd bought a lemon. EVERYONE was having these same problems! The next day, I took it back to Best Buy and exchanged it for a Panasonic RV-30 that was $100 cheaper and has a lot less extra bells and whistles, but so far it's been doing me no wrong. Great picture, great sound...it's just great. Whatever you do, do not buy a Toshiba...oh, an interesting sidenote: when I was at Best Buy returning my 2300, I saw four other people standing in line with various other models of Toshiba DVD players waiting to return them. I just sighed and rolled my eyes. "Yep, Toshiba's are really the best," my friends said...how wrong they were...

Strength:

Great picture quality

Weakness:

Occasional pixilation on imported "rented" DVDs.

So far I am quite satisfied with this DVD player. I bought this last December and so far I have not experienced any of the numerous problems listed here by others. I admit have seen some pixilation on some rented DVDs but these could have been due to scratches. Also, I had problems viewing a track of Das Boot. But here, again, the DVD was scratched. I just skipped the chapter and was able to resume watching the DVD. Similarly, a few other foreign DVDs had similar, albeit minor, problems. This is annoying and I have attributed this to dirty disks. So far I have watched about 20-30 DVDs and I cannot say that I am dissatisfied with this unit. Incidentally, my unit was one of those that needed a software upgrade. I did not notice nuch difference after the upgrade but I was later told that the upgrade had to do with the NUON part of the DVD player.
The NUON feature is questionable. I have not been able to use it extensively. The free Tetris game is nothing to brag about. Hopefully, some better games might be available sometime, but I am not holding my breath. Also, the virtual light machine feature is not my cup of tea and I do not use it. I suppose if one likes those features they might enjoy it?
The picture quality is gorgeous and the transition to the different chapters while playing DVDs is nothing bad or attrotious like what other have pointed out in this forum. I have not yet experienced and bad or problematic transitions.
I wish this DVD palyer had an optical out. It was very short-sighted, or cheap, of Toshiba not to have included it.
Overall I am quite satisfied with this unit, but this is my first DVD player, and I do not have too much experience with other DVD players. Compared to the few comparibly priced DVD players that I have watched (Sony, Panasonic, JVC) this unit is pretty good, if not better. Also, the player boots up faster that any other I have seen and is very quiet in its operation.
I would recommend purchasing it based on my experience thus far.

Weakness:

Audio CDs drop out, freeze; DVD pixellation

This is my third DVD player, & third lemon. The Sony was junk: wouldn't play older audio CDs. The Panasonic was really junk: played audio CDs, but progressively lost it with DVDS.

The Toshiba randomly hiccups (jumping back about 5 seconds) on audio CDs. It does this about once every two discs. It cannot be duplicated. Sometimes it freezes, making a nasty sound.

I have noticed the pixellation on DVDs as well, but seems to play them better than audio CDs. Mine is not among the "bad" serial #s.

Has some nice features, but can't do the basics. Junk.

Well let me start by saying JVC sucks. Sony was alright but the whenever I played cd/dvd in it it sounded like it was going to take off. Returned the sony got the sd-2150. Simply didn't like it. Menus were slow and dvds took forever load. Transport didn't work like I thought it should. Returned it and got the sd-1600. transport was kinda loud and layer changes were more than noticable. sometimes I would have to try a dvd 3 times for it to load. returned it and picked up the sd-2300. I love it. image is much much sharper. image is better all around. Sound is a step above all the rest of em too. I have not noticed any pixelation to speak of. layer changes are not noticable at all. also, I can't even hear the cd/dvd spinning with my ear on the player. Maybe I just got lucky? This dvd player is great and best buy evenly exchanged it for the sd-1600 because of the hassle I've had.
I'll update again when I get done with all my movies.

Strength:

You can turn it off and return it. Also it burns rather easily if you decide to ignite it like I did.

Weakness:

More flaws then the Russian economy.

This is by far one of the worst dvd players on the market. I have been with DVD since it first came out and this is ridiculus for a 4th generation model. The pixelation is horrid. It fills up the whole screen with green boxes and sometimes only parts of the screen with black or white squares. Truly a piece of junk. If you gave this to a bum he would throw it back at you. I was more impressed with the cardboard box it came in then the dvd player itself.

Strength:

Cool remoth and 16x zoom

Weakness:

EVERYTHING. Image pixelated and had millions of artifacts. The whole screen would pixelate like 3 times per a movie. Slow loading the menus on dvds. Layer changes take forever and many more weaknesses. And stupid Nuon only features that are not worth the extra money.

Do not buy this dvd player. The image pixelates in every dvd you put in it. I thought mine was defective but the one I exchanged it with did the same thing. This thing also takes forever to load menus and to do layer changes. The Nuon feature is a waste of $$$ and the games for it suck. Get the Pioneer 333 or if you must get a Toshiba dvd player get the SD-1600 its 100 bucks less and has better image quality and it doesnt pixelate. If you buy this dvd player after reading this review and have the same problems I had dont say I didnt warn you.

Strength:

Great features

Weakness:

Well...

The player seems to be well built and has excellent effects, along with a good mix of fast forward/reverse/slow-mo speeds. But, of the 20 or so mint-condition discs played, 4 of them brought out the ugliness of this machine. On occasion, the player would freeze- the audio and video would just stop. Other times, the video would freeze, and the audio would play for a few more seconds, then stop. In one instance, Titanic locked up in the middle of a scene, and my only option was to shut off the unit. Haven't had a chance to try out any of the nuon features.
In my opinion, Toshiba makes fantastic products in all price ranges, and my experiences with this machine were a surprise to me. Maybe I just got a dud.

I plan to return this unit shortly and try a little higher up the Toshiba ladder.

Strength:

Very nice NUON Effects. Good remote and options on DVD Player.

Weakness:

Will not play at least 1 movie so far. The Layer change on any movie produces and pause.

The SD2300 is a very nice DVD Player...except for a couple things. It will not play Mission to Mars at all. I Rented 2 copies of this movie to watch...and it just tells me the "Disc is Loading" and never actually plays. The second problem I have with it is at every layer change there is a noticeable PAUSE...and then it moves on. Just an annoyance really. Besides these problems I love this DVD player. With the high color overlayed menu's and all the extra-special features it has...It's a very good choice!

Strength:

Digital Filtered Zoom, smooth special effects.

Weakness:

What good is the ZOOM & effects when you cant watch a single dvd w/o experiencing problems?

Its not the nuon technology that sucks...its TOSHIBA...Period! I decided to try this unit given the fact that the models serial #s werent included in the firmware upgrade. But guess what? It STILL gave me problems! Its the same exact problems the MAJORITY of Toshibas have...Pixelation, freezing. Mine gave me something new...picture freeze while the audio was still going! THE HELL with firmware upgrades! Nothing this new should require that when other units out there DONT! EVERY SINGLE DVD I threw at it over the weekend had something go wrong! The MATRIX-pixeld, Meet the Parents-pixeld, The Contender-pixeld, & froze...The Bodyguard-pixeld...etc, I was very upset because the zoom allowed to reduce the black bars...but to what end? I'd rather have a thick as hell letterbox movie than one that "glitches". I took this piece of crap back to BEST BUY and the idiot hooks the unit up, puts in a disc for approx ONE MINUTE!... and says, "I dont see anything wrong"...So I invited him to spend the weekend with me viewing about 10 movies, but he said he couldnt do that...then I said..."Then dont make idiot statements just because you put in a movie for a big whopping minute!" (Straight out of high school and they think they're "techs" cause they work behind a counter and can figure out how to plug somthing into a wall...)So I went to get the Pansonic RV30 (based on very good long term reviews) guess what? They're being discontinued! All thats on the shelf are crappy sonys & TOSHIBAS! ARGHHHHHHHH!!!! Then I saw the Pioneer DVC503 (5disc changer) My butt clenched because I DIDNT read ANY REVIEWS on this! I took it home last night...hooked it up, and played THE MATRIX...SMOOTH all the way through (The picture was better as well. The Toshibas had a dark image..EVEN with the settings OFF!) Then this morning I came to work, logged on, held my breath for the reviews and score on the Pioneer and was pleasently surprised! 4.21 out of 5! My fingers are crossed that this will hold up....I mean what the hell, I had a PHILLIPS for a YEAR before any problems surfaced! RUN from a TOSHIBA!!! the few good ones out there dont make up for the MANY LEMONS! How could a company (Toshiba) who was in on the dvd technology consistently SCREW up? Since PIONEER "pioneered" Laser discs in the 70's I'm hoping on the DVD...will keep ya posted.
