Strength:

Excellent Picture Quality, Built in AC-3 Decoder, Nice Remote

Weakness:

Some quirks with firmware and the remote is a battery vampire

I love my DVD player, but yes, mine too needs the latest firmware upgrade. Two movies I havent been able to play are Mission Impossible 2 and The Perfect Storm. I called Toshiba and they offered to do the upgrade for FREE. You can call and get yours fixed, too: 1-800-631-3811

Strength:

It simply ROCKS!

Weakness:

None After getting incompatibility issue fixed!

I too had this problem with the SD 3108 unit and honestly there is not a lot anyone can do about it until they standardize the DVD industry – however I was able to find a cure. I called Toshiba @ 800-631-3811 and was able to get it sent in and have it updated to allow for some of the new formats/movies to be played on it (Cool). Anyone with this unit may want to also try this. I am sending mine to the repair center and will not replace it – this is one of the best units currently out for the $ – best bang for the buck.

They may have not known at the time of your call but when I called they responded with action - good luck!

Strength:

Very good picture, built-in DD decoder

Weakness:

None anymore.

I had the same problem as many, not being able to view certain DVD's (The Abyss, Mission to Mars, The Perfect storm). The 3108 would stop loading and say "Plese Check Disk".

Although it seems to have taken Toshiba a while to 'fess up and admit that there was a firmware problem, Toshiba Canada has extended the warranty an extra year and upgraded the firmware free of charge! Future upgrades, should they be needed, are supposed to cost $35CAN. Excellent service from Toshiba! I recommend that you deal with your local Toshiba sales/service center and not an authorized independant service center.

By the way, it works fine now!
