Strength:

Excellent video and audio quality for the price.

Weakness:

Will not play newer DVD's and Toshiba will not honor or extend my warranty to do so!

I purchased this player after long and CAREFUL comparison shopping.I was very happy with it until very recently. In fact it was a great joy to me and my families home theater setup. As mentioned on this list, the inabilty to play the newer discs has been a GREAT disappointment to me. I too rented and returned many discs from Blockbuster, to find out from people like yourselves, that there is a problem with the software portion of my player and not the discs! I sent several emails and phone calls to Toshiba to have them tell me FINALLY, that there IS A PROBLEM with their product. But the worst part is that they say that I MUST PAY for this software upgrade including shipping to and from the facility in Atlanta, Georgia! I feel this is a terrible act towards their customers, they must have known that there was a problem with their machine and all they did was string me along for weeks. Yes the warranty is now over, but this is not what I consider to be a REPAIR. Anyone have any luck with anyone at Toshiba? A name of someone with authority would be much appreciated! By the way, I purchased a Sony DVPS-7700 to replace this unit in my home theater. While I'm happy with this unit and it's so called "reference quality", believe it or not I like the features of the Toshiba player a little better! I still want to keep the Toshiba player and place it upstairs in my bedroom when and if I get it back from Toshiba.

Lately, I'm unable to watch new DVD movies like Gladiators or The X-Men. Either the DVD format has changed or that the player is simply on it's way to obsolescence. All I've been getting is the familiar and the disc simply wouldn't load and play. However, the Chicken Run did play but only in 5.1 and not DTS-ES.

Toshiba service center advised that there'll be an estimate charge of $65.00 for the preliminary diagnosis of the unit which will take them 3-4 weeks to get the answers in. It might take them longer due to Holidays. I'd also have to pay an x-amount of fees for the actual labor cost.

I don't have any complaints about this player until the recent incidents. So to save myself some aggravation, I went ahead and decided to get a new Sony DVP-S7700. I'll just keep the obsolete unit in my room for now.

I have used this player for about 3 weeks now and compared it to the Pioneer 414 on my system. I hooked it to a Yamaha DDP-2, I found that the sound is better this way. I have been very pleased with the picture and audio with this player. The picture is crystal clear and the added features of Zoom and jog/shuttle are enjoyable and function well. The menu is easy to use as well as is the remote. The manual is clear enough although I don't like all the footnotes written in small fonts. I think that this will be a player that I will be able to enjoy for years to come. FYI- my comments on the Pioneer 414 are given under that product review

Strength:

stylish slim line design, universal remote, built in dolby digital decoder, gold plated terminals

Weakness:

remote sometimes does not respond even while pointing right at the unit.

I like this DVD player, in fact I returned the SD-3109 to get this unit.
Video and Audio where well above my expectations. Like the jog shuttle on the remote; althougth I did have some problems with the remote from time to time, the unit doesn't seem to respond occasionally. Anyway bottom line, couldn't have made a better choice for the buck. I use my audio setting in Bitstream makes a world of difference as compared to 6CH.

FANTASTIC!!!!! What you get for the price cannot be beat. The remote is a bit on the LARGE side but has everything you can ask for. Until I find a suitcase full of money this DVD player will stay.

Strength:

Best price for features ratio when I bought it in Dec 98. Great 5.1 sound through digital optical connection to my Onkyo TX-DS838 receiver.

Weakness:

Very disappointed when it did not play the Gladiator DVD I got for Christmas this year.

Getting the "Please Check Disk" message when trying to play a recent DVD? Press the "Zoom", "6", "0", "6", "Zoom" keys in sequence on your remote to display your ROM firmware version.

Mine was V1.0 before upgrading. I had experienced annoying problems navigating & selecting menus in The Matrix, The Abyss Special Edition and The Rocky Horror Picture Show DVDs.

Tried calling Toshiba customer service line, sat on hold for half an hour before giving up.

Took unit to American TV's service department, unit was out of warranty. $30 deposit for initial inspection, another $30 for ROM firmware upgrade (to V3.3) and cleaning.

Gladiator now plays. Other DVDs seem to load faster and menu navigation is more responsive.

Strength:

Great Picture

Weakness:

Too many DVD's will not play in machine!!!

Every 3rd or 4th DVD I rent will not play in machine. I bought Independence Day last week and it will not play. Mission to Mars will not play also. There is nothing worse than when you have company over and after diner everyone gathers in the home theater room and you pop in the DVD and get a "Please check disc" message. Sitting there with over $25,000 worth of equipment and there is nothing you can do but pull out a movie that you have seen several times already SUCKS!I have read about an upgrade that Toshiba has to do with the unit that takes several weeks. What a hassel!! I wish I would have bought the Sony or the Panasonic.

Strength:

Plays the older DVDs

Weakness:

The remote is inadaquate in any measurment.

I too have enjoyed the 3108 in the past, maybe because it was the first DVD player I bought. I recognized that the remote is quirky right off the bat.
I have recently noticed as many have that new DVDs do not play. Toshiba does not back up their product as they should. Not only do we have to ship this piece accross the country and wait a few weeks, but also have to pay $49 to correct their firmeware. I had a conversation about this with their tech support and the oporator was not only ignorant, but rude. I feel bad I convinced friends of mine into buying Toshiba products.....NO more.

Strength:

Great Picture - But then again, it's DVD.

Weakness:

Upgrade Process STINKS!

Even though Toshiba graciously agreed to upgrade the firmware in the unit for free, even though it's out of warranty, I had to send it to ATLANTA to get it done, and they have no idea how long it will take to get it back. I feel this upgrade option STINKS. They should have a LOCAL shop do the upgrade, why should I have to be without my unit for who knows how long. I don't beleive that other manufacturers have these "upgrade" problems, at least I have never heard of them. Every time I hear of a disc not playing in a unit, it's a TOSHIBA. For me, this is the last Toshiba product I will purchase. Perhaps they should put their engineers to work on a way to upgrade the firmware using a special DVD, and a switch somewhere on the back of the unit. I am SURE it can be done.
