I've had this player for about 2 months now, but since I wasn't through upgrading my system, I couldn't give it a fair review. Now my system has been hooked up and I am finally enjoying this piece of work. The picture is good if you only use the composite it came with the box, however, do yourself a big favor and go buy a s-video cable and the picture is amazing!!! The receiver I'm using is Yamaha RXV-995 and I'm currently running optical cable to get Dolby Digital, I tried gold-plated co-axial but found the optical to produce a better sound IMHO. However, there is a problem and I still don't know if this is a problem with the player or with the receiver, my player doesn't play any Tri-Star DVD's in Dolby Digital, the receiver only detects Dolby Pro-Logic signals coming from the player and refuse to acknowledge it's Dolby-Digital. At first I was so frustrated because I knew the difference was big between the two, but I tried several other DVD's I own, and none had the problem. The Tri-Star DVDs I own that doesn't run in Dolby-Digital are "Jerry Maguire", "Godzilla" and "The Mask of Zorro", the others were from different companies like Miramax and Disney. I would appreciate it if anyone had the same situation happen to them and would love some feedback, overall I think this player is terrific. |

I have had my SD-3108 for about 4 months now. At first I had it running with my 2-channel Kenwood VR-1060 and it did pretty good with the spatializer. I now have it hooked into a Yamaha RX-V2095 with Klipsch KLF-20 fronts, KSF 10.5 rears, KLF-C7 center and KSW-300 sub and WOW it is very impressive. I have some DTS music CD's (Bonnie Raitt and Steeley Dan) that sound very good, the normal 2-channel audio CD's are very good as well. For movies, I am using the Color Stream component video hookup into my Toshiba TP55H95 television and the colors are very rich (better then S-Video hookup) My only gripe for making this less then perfect is the inability to play CD-Rs (which is like most of the DVD players out there) |

I am truely enjoying my DVD player.....the visual image is great and it soundsexcellent in pro-logic and dolby digital. The only problem I have with it is the unit does not respond well when given commands from the remote control (at times). And I could not play the "Tekken" movie (Japanese Animation). Other than that....this is an excellent piece and it is a nice addition to my home theater. |

Weakness:
DOESN'T PLAY NEW DISCS!!! Toshiba wants $50 to fix design flaw this player DOESN'T PLAY NEW DISCS!!! As many others here have mentioned this player has a firmware design flaw that keeps it from playing newer discs. Toshiba insists on $50 to upgrade the player if your out of the 1 year waranty window. I say trash it buy a new player and avoid Toshiba products at all costs in the future. I'm not accustomed to $500 items failing to opperate after 2 years of service. |

Very easy to use and setup. Has great audio and video. At the time that I bought this player it was one of the best players on the market.
Weakness:
Will not play newer titles like Gladiator, Titan AE, MI2, Mission to Mars or any disc encoded with PC friendly. First I would like to say that DVD has been great for 2 years and I NEVER had a problem until 2months ago when the above title came out. I was shocked when this happen because I knew friends that had non Toshiba DVD players that couldn't play Matrix, Enemy of the State and T2. My player played them perfectly. After I found that the above DVD's would not play I did some research and found that all of the above DVD'd are encoded with "PC Friendly" but for some reason my player is not compatiable and get just displays "PLEASE CHECK DISC". I called Toshiba and they gave me the address and cost about ($50). I will send in my play in a few days for the upgrade. To be honest this is the first problem that I've had with this player. The $50 is also cheaper than spending another $385 for new player. If it wasn't for the 2 years of flawless performance I would have rated this product 1's. But since DVD technology is new and changing will stick with Toshiba. Similar Products Used: Sony, Pioneer Elite and Panasonic. |
