Got this in March. I love it: wonderful picture and sound quality. I am usingthe S-video output. I like the remote, and I have not had the same
problems with the remote that others have had. I do have one complaint. As an
ordinary CD player, I've found that about 25% of the CD's I've put in won't play. I don't care so much because I have another CD player.

The zoom really makes this player for me. I have a Mits 40in tube set(40-809)and like a bigger picture than many LB give. The zoomed quality is great and will give me picture quality that is relative to the quality of the DVD. About as good as it gets for now. If the Sony 7000 had zoom I would want one...but I NEED the zoom for letterbox DVDs. Please note...all 5 stars except for off topic posts. This is a GREAT DVD player!John^^

This player is absolutely dynamite! I have had it since Christmas and am extremely pleased! I plan to purchase a receiver soon and the Energy Take 5 system to exploit the DD capabilities of this machine. The only minor complaint I have is the occasional squirely-ness of the remote, echoing previous reviews. Either this mother sucks the juice out of batteries or there is a fundamental flaw with the remote, as it tends not to work when used more then 5 feet away from the machine. This is, as I say, a minor problem IMO. I can live with it, since the machine itself is so orgasmically wonderously stupendously sublime. Well, maybe not that good, but pretty darned close.

I just bought a demo SD3108 for $575 CAN. I used the SVideo output and digital coax output for Dolby digital from the unit. The video output is superb, I wish I could input ColorStream to my Pioneer 51". I was very impressed with the sound quality of music CDs I haven't run into any problems playing CDs yet. The CD sound quality is more rich than my Sony 5 disk player even when its optically connected. Needless to say the Dolby Digital sound is superb.
My only complaint is that this unit is not DTS compatible, I am going to try to trade up to the SD2109 or SD3109.

I have to give this product 5 stars as it is older and I can't fault it for not having the new DTS capability.

I've had this player now for almost a year and I've loved everysingle second of it. Excellant video and brilliant audio made this my choice. Although not the greatest player on the market I believe it is probably the best player under $1000. The remote is awesome backlit and all, the DD decoder is excellant quality considering it's built in to the player. Better audio than any Technics receiver/decoder will give you, and the picture is up there with the sony7000. I've only seen the layer change once (American History X). This model is far better than is seccesor the 3109, which only carries HDCD capability to it's advantage. Everything else was budgeted to make it cheaper. A more accurate replacement of the 3108 would be considered the 9000 (thier $1000 flagship) which isn't suprising considering the retail of the 3108 is &699 (not $449). But they are easily accessed for about $450-500. Get one if you can...

Ok DVD, but not to exciting. I've had mine for nine months now. Pictureis good, but sound from audio CD is really bad. The remote also sucks.
Have had player on for a couple of days, pop in a movie, just get distorted
picture and sound. Turn machine off and on again and everything works. Strange...

No more toshiba brand loyalty for me.
This DVD, purchased in January of 1999, will not play the "alien" series of disks from 20th century.

I called toshiba and for a mere $70.00 I can ship it to them and they will be nice enough to send me back a REFURBISHED unit that will play the disks.

Otherwise, the unit is a 4.

Don't buy this player.

Strength:

Picture quality, Jog, Set up features, Black in Black

Weakness:

Remote control, Firmware up grade necessary for some some units

This is an older model DVD player that DTS capabilities and is Dolby Digital Ready. The units manufactured before Dec. 1997 require firmware upgrades due to problems playing DVD-ROM movies such as The Matrix and Aliens. Overall the unit is easy to use, the slow motion Jog is great for careful review of film sequences, and the ability to reveiw the bit rate compression is great to have. Overall this player is a great choice.
