Strength:

Great sound and picture. Dual Disc is nice.

Weakness:

Minor video flicker when a movie scene disolves to white. Only a problem on my Harmon Kardon AV110 Reciever. Never a Problem when hooked directly into the TV.

I love this DVD player. The Picture and sound are great. I have never had a ship, even on bad rental DVD's with a lot of scratches. Been using it for over 2 years now and haven't had a problem. Play every DVD that I've thrown at it. Wish it supporter CD-R, otherwise a great product...

Strength:

It does play DVD's. No major skipping/freezing problems (with the exception of "The Matrix"? Anyone else have trouble with this disk?)

Weakness:

-Horrid remote, what idiot put the FF and Chapter Skip on the same button? Half the time it accidentally skips to the next chapter when I just want to scan ahead.
-Crappy video. Totally blurs out in any bright sequence involving the sky.
-Dual tray feature sucks. You can never be sure which disk is going to play, and the tray is terribly slow to open/close. I don't like standing around for 20 seconds waiting for it to open.

A terrible disappointment.

Strength:

Dual CD, loaded with features, the right price

Weakness:

The remote needs help, basic features missing. This is the
second 3109 I have had within 1 week.

I love what this machine should be able to do, but this is the second one that I have had. They were display models at Sears, but I got the manual, remote and wires ... so I'm happy. I only paid $170 for it. The first one would not let you use disc 1, so I took it back and the second one only flashes loading and never loads up. I would like to keep it, but if it does not work, what good is it? Some of these reviews scare me. I did not have any problems with any of the Sony DVDs, especially the C650D 5 disc changer. Sony, gotta love it!

Strength:

HDCD Decoding. Dual-Tray. All the required features. Very intuitive controls. Good price (Ecost).

Weakness:

Lack of separate ffwd button.

Great DVD player! Has all the goodies that you need, including HDCD encoding (even though out of my 400 discs, only 12 or so are HDCD so far). Dual-Tray is nice to have. Component Video is great for hookup to Toshiba TV (CZ36V61). Seems more solidly built than Sony or Panasonic. Can find good deals on the web ($300). Only gripe is the lack of the separate ffwd button on the unit and the remote - WHY WAS THIS OMITTED???

Strength:

Excellent picture-HDCD-Dual Tray

Weakness:

slow loading

I BOUGHT THE 3109 BECAUSE OF THE HDCD CAPABILITES AND I'M VERY SATISFIED! THE PICTURE QUALITY IS SLIGHTLY BETTER THAN THE 2107 BUT WITH THE ADDED FEATURES ( DUAL TRAY- HDCD ) THE 3109 BECOMES A BARGAIN! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Strength:

Everything and the kitchen sink are in the cheapo DVD player

Weakness:

Maybe there are too many things to handle some there are some bugs...

I bought the Hong Kong version of this player, it is champagne gold in colour and includes 2 mic jacks and Karaoke function!

Well I won't say the merits of this player cos they are said already, I like it very much as long as DVD and CD playing goes. However I would like to point out a few quirks with this player so you can decide to buy or not.

First, the dual tray is a good idea, but not well-implemented. The control is a mess, and need a lot of getting used to. Like when you eject Disc 1 and click play, the tray will slip in, but play Disc 2 instead and not Disc 1. And when either disc is finished, the player won't turn to another disc but you have to click select button to swap.

Second, the Zoom function has some bugs. If you zoom watch the movie and stopped playing in the middle, when you play it again, the screen will relocate to center in the upper left corner, and the subtitles are gone too. Not too good. Although you would argue who will use Zoom, but I found that for some 16:9 movies one level of zooming is easy to my eyes in my 29" 4:3 TV.

Third, someone down below side the HDCD function won't work all the time. Yes it works, ONLY if you TURN OFF the 3D spatializer. If you turn it on, you won't get HDCD. Strange it seems, but it says this in the manual. Also, only the analogue audio out can experience the full power of HDCD, so if you think you can make it as a decoder, forget it.

Otherwise, I love this DVD player, the picture is sharp and its music is lovely. I highly recommend it if you like to have an all-in-one DVD/VCD/CD player.

Strength:

Very good DVD player

Weakness:

Has a very annoying software problem

OK, the SD3109 is a very good DVD player (as you can read from the other 200+ reviews on this page).

BUT:
My player not only freezes at "Enemy of the state" chapter 18, something similar happens with "Armageddon": at the beginning of chapter 3, it switches to french (sounds familiar) and then skips chapter 3 completely. What is very interesting to me is that both movies come from the same motion picture studio.

Now I hope that someone has some advise:
When I noticed the problem with "Enemy" I had the player for almost 3 months. Unfortunately I bough the player at the "good" guys and even more unfortunately I didn't get the extended warranty package (A must get if you are in the market for DVD players). So I brought the player in for repair and first of all had a 30 minute discussion with the sales rep who was very hard to convince that indeed it is a problem with the player NOT the disc. So finally the "good" guys accepted the player for repair (but only after I agreed to also give them the disc). Of course I got NO loaner for the 3 weeks repair time. When I finally got the player back, nothing had been fixed! There was a note on the player "bad disc". At this point I was so frustrated in waiting for the player that I decided that I would keep the bad player and hoped that the glitch would not happen again. Now I have a similar problem with the next disc but my 3 months warranty is over.

Does anyone have any good suggestions what to do?

Strength:

Great DVD player. Colors are very vivid. This is excellent as a CD player as well, although I have so far been unable to find a CD-R that will play on this machine.

Weakness:

CD-R's will not play on this. This is not a huge weakness, but I still think it would be nice to be able to play these. For now, I have a CD player hooked into my system which will play CD-R's.

This is a superb DVD and CD player. It was very easy to set up and play disks. The video and audio are excellent! Although I did not initially think the dual tray would be a very useful feature, I have found it to be. The player allows you to program tracks from two audio CD's, and switches back and forth between the two disks very nicely. It would do the same with a CD and a DVD, but I fail to see the usefulness in doing this. To program disk trak play, you use the memory button on the remote. Your selections appear on the TV screen. As the disk selections are played, these can be viewed on the TV screen. I don't have any HDCD disks yet, but I am definitely planning on getting one or two of these in the very near future to try this feature out. For now, I think the CD audio is comparable to my Denon DCD-1800.

For the money, I am extremely happy with this player. I got it for $299 (with a price match) from Roxy.com, and they threw in a $25 gift certificate from Blockbuster video for purchase of ANYTHING!!

To date, I have played 4 DVD's, and a dozen or so CD's on this player. The only problem I have experienced so far is one disk started to "pixelize" during play. I replayed it, and got the same problem (at the exact same spot on the disk). After a quick cleaning, I replayed this disk with no further problems. I saw noticible smudges on it when cleaning. I have surmised from this experience that it is VERY important to check disks BEFORE play. From what I read, DVD's are much more sensitive to smudges than CD's.

I don't think you can go wrong with this player! It's a great bang for the buck. With all of the new features being added on electronic equipment these days, I think it makes sense to get a player like this, rather than a very expensive one. In a few years, when HDTV is widely available at a "reasonable" price, I will be able to upgrade to a new DVD player without ever regretting how much I spent on this one.

From what I read, I am still hopeful of finding a CD-R brand which plays on this machine. I understand that there are some disks which will play....and that these are more or less opaque. CD-R disks which are translucent do not work in this player. If anybody knows of a brand that works, I would appreciate it if you would e-mail me with this information. Otherwise, I will continue to hang on to my Denon CD player, which works fine with CD-R's.

5 stars for value and overall rating.

Strength:

dual tray, dts, and 5.1

Weakness:

remote does not respond quick enough

everything is great. picture quality isnt much different than a cheap dvd player, but you pay for the audio and i think its worth it if your sound system is dts, or digital 5.1. if you shop around to make sure you get a good deal, this is a great unit and well worth say 300 dollars. but no more than that. dual trays is a nice feature. remote is nice too, but some of the functions dont respond quick enough and sometimes you have to push and hold the button twice to get a response. this happens even when you are 2 feet away. it really bugs me sometimes. over all i rate this to be the best for 300 dollars or less. my panasonic that i owned before this one was a great unit to. but did not have the sound features that you need to have with a great home stero unit.
