Strength:

Superb video and audio

Weakness:

slow tray response is annoying

Got this aug off net purchase, seems from other reviews I've been one of the lucky ones. Mine drives a brand new GAOO TV via SVHS jack, and I've got no video distortion problems at all. Video seems flawless on my equipment.

The only performance problem I've had is dirty discs.

HDCD audio is amazing on this unit. Wish it had a direct headphone jack.

The annoyance is that upon power up, you gotta wait several seconds before the open tray buttons work. Don't know, but this really bugs me.

Strength:

GREAT AUDIO (HDCD), DUAL-TRAY

Weakness:

SO-SO REMOTE, CAN'T RANDOMLY LISTEN TO BOTH CD'S WHEN TRAY IS FULL

I jumped onboard the DVD express after about a year of debating. The Toshiba seemed to have a lot to offer, especially since I'm also using it to replace both my Laserdisc player and my CD player (both Pioneer). Overall though, I'm not that happy with the DVD format in general (mainly picture quality), but then again, I'm running through a Toshiba 50" RPTV which shows a lot of defects in the film transfer. Obviously it looks much better on my 27" ProScan, but I'll sacrifice picture quality for picture size.

I will give it this-the audio is great; very clear and precise (especially with my new Energy surround system).

If you can pick one up for less than $350 (like I did), get it.

Strength:

Video, Dual Tray, Best Zoom of any brand

Weakness:

Doesnt switch to 2nd DVD automatically if you are watching a two DVD movie

I bought the 3109 when it first came out in April and it has been everything I hoped it would be. Problem free. Outstanding picture. Downconversion doenst bother me on my 35" TV. Zoom is very clean and would be great if you have a small TV where you want to fill up the screen with more of the movie image instead of black bars. Remote is nice and has flourescent keys. A much better remote than the 2109. Spend the extra $50 and get this unit over the 2109. You wont regret it.

Strength:

HDCD,glitch free

Weakness:

Cheap build quality

Let's face it, the 3109 is not the best piece of H.T. hardware ever made- the build quality is definitely dissapointing. Overall however, for the price the performance is outstanding. The picture is very good and the player has been glitch free.
DVD is a short term item with HDDVD on the horizon. Why blow big bucks? Enjoy this now and then upgrade the DVD in the future and the 3109 still makes an admirable HDCD player.

Strength:

Clear picture, dual tray, zoom feature

Weakness:

remote doesn't light up

Just bought this a month ago and I love it! No problems with any disks yet, and the dual tray is a nice added feature. This is a great value for the price!

Weakness:

Build quality on par with other pieces of $300 AV equipment

Ah the wonderful sound of audiophile snobbery!
I don't know what it is about spending a month's salary on a piece of AV equipment that makes people's heads swell. We all know that using a high end DVD player in tandem with a dedicated outboard converter will provide the best image and sound quality, but you can't get that for $300 (even if you scour the AV stores for "open box" and "used" models). Who expects their $300 DVD player to weigh 50 pounds and have a chassis made from the latest flavor of the month unobtanium? Who watches TV in an electronics testing lab so they can tell exactly when their color balance is out of whack?
The answer is nobody (besides AV snobs). And, if you're a normal guy (or girl) who doesn't want to mortgage the house for the latest in tech (it'll be obsolete in a year or two anyway), the Toshiba offers a solid combination of features and performance.

Strength:

I waited 6 months to get this player after my 3108 order was cancelled last Christmas. The pre-release specs were great, but by the time the unit was produced, the Burr-Brown DACs had disappeared. Still, the HDCD quality was superb. Since the 3109 replaced my old DVD and CD player, I have been very pleased.

Weakness:

I have had problems with the reverse function on my player. If I use the 32X reverse, when I press play, it start the movie at the frame that I started reversing from. This doesn't happen in 2X or 8X, though.

Great player for the price!

Strength:

Zoom feature, great color and sharpness

Weakness:

Forward/reverse button on remote

I have this player hooked up to a 61" Toshiba RPTV and the picture is just incredible. I use the zoom feature to watch wide screen move in 4:3 format, for this feature alone I would not trade for any other player without it. I use component video and really don't know what people are complaining about bad downconversion. I have watched Matrix in ZOOM-2 and it is great and still very clear.

Strength:

Clear, sharp video and above average audio. Zoom feature is great. Dual disk is a nice feature.

Weakness:

Zoom notice should disappear after a few seconds. I wish it wouldn't power off on its own.

The Toshiba 3109 is an excellent value. Although I didn't need the DD decoder, I bought this unit instead of the 2109 to get the capability to play HDCD and because of the dual disk. I keep a favorite music dvd in tray 2 and enjoy having it always instantly available. It's also nice for the double disk movies such as Dances With Wolves. I've never had a single problem and highly recommend this product.
