Strength:

Zoom feature, DTS, DD outputs.

Weakness:

Uses scan and ff/rew on the same buttons. Remote large.

This player is a big leap forward from the older 3107. Everything about the 3109 is great except for the remote, and the disc select function.

Strength:

Dual-tray; Zoom feature; built-in Doby Digital decoder.

Weakness:

Remote - navigation is not user friendly

My first DVD player and I couldn't be happier. Didn't really need the "built-in decoder", since my Denon AV3200 was already equipped with one. But when the time comes to buy another DVD unit with more features, this one can stand on its own with the bedroom TV.

Strength:

Good picture & sound

Weakness:

Can not read CDR produced VCDs

Overall I am happy with this machine, as picture quality & sound produced with the DTS is very good. The second tray is a complete waste. Remote is pretty good, but to me the Sony remotes are more complete. Biggest drawback for me is that it will not read VCDs I burn from my PC.

Strength:

dual drawer, HDCD, builtin Dolby decoder

Weakness:

flimsy drawer, non-lighted remote, no jog-control

I've had this for about six months now with no glitches yet... I'd highly recommend this one, especially if you need the decoder.

Strength:

Very reliable. Incredible value for money.

Weakness:

Virtually none.

With the exception of a one-time, unrepeatable, glitch while watching Yellow Submarine the 3109 has performed flawlessly through at least 75 movies. The feature set is extensive, especially at this price range.

If you have non-videophiles in your household the 3109 offers a neat zoom feature that will allow them to watch letterboxed films at full frame. While this certainly degrades the picture quality and film viewing experience for me sometimes my movie night guests prefer it. A nice option to have.

Strength:

Dual tray; zoom capability

Weakness:

Remote; scene skipping (see below)

I've noticed the following problems:

On Armageddon and Civil Action, when the player came across the subtitles in English, it re-played the subtitle in French, and then skipped to the next chapter.

On Total Recall, there was a brief scene with Sharon Stone where her voice was a second behind the video. (lipsynch issue.)

My wife called the Toshiba customer service center, explained the problem and was told that, more than likely, we had received a unit with a bad chip. Because of a backorder situation Toshiba currently has, we will be receiving a new unit.

Aside from the scene skipping issue, which Toshiba will address, I would highly recommend this unit.

Strength:

A bargain for $269

Weakness:

Lightweight construction, sensitive to dirty DVDs

Based mainly on the recommendation I received from the Home Theater Company in Sacramento and the love it or hate it reviews at this website, I decided to take a chance on this DVD player. I got it new from UBID for $269 plus shipping (~$16). So far, I have played the following DVDs on it: The Matrix, Prince of Egypt, Enemy of the State, Titanic, Bug's Life and Shakespeare in Love. The only problems I've experienced were with The Matrix and Enemy of the State, and both times the problems disappeared w/out recurrance after removing the DVD from the tray and cleaning it. I'm auditioning four more DVDs next week, so I'll post again if my opinion changes. I give it 5 stars for value and 4 for overall, since it seems so sensitive to dirty DVDs.

Strength:

Dual trays, Variety of audio formats

Weakness:

None

I have been using my 3109 for about 5 weeks now and love it. Both video and audio quality are excellent. I have wacthed about 25 movies so far and the trays have worked fine. Once they are used for what they have been intended for, they'll last!!

I bought my system for $298 from Sound Advice in Miami. Best Buy also had them at that same price. My advice is to check around if you don't get a price under $350.
