Strength:

dolby digital, DTS, HDCD, dual tray, component video

Weakness:

clumsy remote, inferior laser mech

had this unit for 11 months, working beautifully, enjoying the dual trays, dolby digital, DTS, HDCD and component video outputs, then discs started failing.

had it serviced which resulted in replacement of the laser mech, $135 just for the part!! good thing i bought it from netmarket which provides free 2 year extended warranties. i don't use it now since getting the jvc 523gd.

4 stars for value, 2 stars overall due to common problem with cheap, faulty laser mech.

Strength:

zoom,dual disc

Weakness:

poor warranty,

I've used this player for 7 months then it started freezing,
and saying insert disc.Sent it in for repair had warranty issue to be dealt with. They wanted us to pay 160.00 for something that was still covered under manufactures warranty. We got the player back and 4 months later the player will not play any of the disc's that we own. Now they say we will have to pay to have the same pickup replaced.Do yourself a favor and save yourself some money and a enormous headache avoid this model at all costs...
There are much better ones for the money..

Strength:

number of features for the price (at the time)

Weakness:

cheap laser, bulky remote

purchased the unit november of 1999 and it has performed rather well, up until recently. it now fails to read over half of my 200+ DVD collection resulting in the dreaded "disc error". i've got other audio/video components that are over 10 years old and still perform flawlessly. i would expect no less from a dvd player, yet less than a year later, it is failing. cheap components? poor manufacturing/quality control? relatively new technology? whatever the cause, manufacturers should accept total responsibility!!

Strength:

Dolby Digital 5.1 Channel outputs, Component Video outputs, Fiber Optic output, Dual Disc Tray, Very Cool Menu, Easy to switch to different ratios, and HDCD. Good picture Quality and especially with S-Video Hookup. I love the remote.

Weakness:

Cannot Enter Menu selections from system, have to use the remote. Basically, not enough selection buttons on the actual unit.

This is a WONDERFUL DVD Player!!!!

I can't really bring up any flaws except as mentioned. I don't have a home audio system hooked up yet so I can't comment on the built in Dolby digital board.

However, I have two questions that I hope can be answered.

1.) I read in my manual that it is only capable of playing Region one Discs. Yet I have read it listed in magazines as having "ALL" compatibility. I haven't tried any other region discs yet but can somebody tell me if it can play ALL regions or not?

2.) The HDCD. Sadly, I haven't heard anything noticable in sound improvement. I have listened to CDS through my TV and my Shelf System. I don't see how it makes the CD's sound any better? All it does is seem to put my music at a lower volume.

Strength:

Good Picture Quality, good sound on the 5.1 channel outputs. Remote is easy to use without looking at it.

Weakness:

Stopped working consistently after only 4 months of light usage, load times are slow.

I bought this DVD player despite some bad reviews and complaints, but it was the fact that this player was really the cheapest of its kind to feature 5.1 channel audio outputs, which I happen to need for my sound setup.
The player was absolutely great while it worked. While it worked. Four months later, the DVD played is unable to recognize that there is a disc loaded, then when it does realize that the disc is loaded, makes you wait through unbearably long load times and pixelized picture at points. I have a temporary fix for this problem: I opened the DVD player and tapped the DVD spindle itself - this seems to correct the problem with the 3109 not recognizing the disc, though this only lasts through one or two sessions of play. BOTTOM LINE: I got a lemon, otherwise it's a great player. My recommendation would be to buy this one a store close to home, just in case you need to return it past the manufacturer's warranty

Dual tray, digital out, DTS and DD compatible, component video out

Weakness:

The FF/Rev buttons for chapter skip and scan on the remote

I bought this about nine months ago. So far I've had no problems with mine, unlike others.

I use the coax bitstream output, so I can't comment on the sound quality. I don't yet have a TV with component inputs, but a DVD player with component outs was required for me.

All in all, I'm happy with the player. It does what it's supposed to do. I'm not happy with the FF/Rev buttons on the remote, but I won't rehash that one.

At the time I purchased it, this was a full featured player at a good price. With no problems so far, I have nothing to complain about other than the ergonomics of the remote.

Also the unit has locked up at times. I now have to bring this unit to get repaired. Its a good thing that I bought the extended warranty.

To much Jitter,

I didn't like this things because the jitter is to high. First of all i try to play HDCD (The Dance, Dave Koz) then In the middle of the song, I started to hear clicking noise. I thought the noise is from my speaker( because my B&W speaker is pretty old and I bought it used.) I start to do some other test by playing another music. I try classical music (The Norton Recordings, Eight Edition.) When I start to play song from Vivaldi, I start to test by raise the speaker volume, and I hear that all the treble is very good, this show that the problem is not on my Speaker. I wouldn't recomend this product to people who expect sound Quality. However, I didn't test for the picture quality, because I will refund this things as soon as possible
