Strength:

good sound and picture

Weakness:

optical sensor

Bought the product in November of 2000. As with any product it had a 90day labor and 1year parts warranty. After 5-6 months the door would not stay open. It would open, spin the carrousel around and then close. If you were lucky enough to press the open/close button at the correct time then the door would stay open. If you pressed the skip disk button or any other button the door would close. End of story was a $15 optical sensor that went bad that was covered by the warranty, but not the $100 to fix the problem. System works fine again, hope it will continue to work.

Strength:

when it worked, it worked well.

Weakness:

GP2s28 Photo interuper, this is the part that recognizes the disc when in the tray.

After 4 months it started not recognizing the discs. The photo interupter was bad. Well its great to have a warrantee, but after 90 days you are about on your own. They want $79 to open the case. The parts are dirt cheap but the labor can end up costing more than its worth. Well I ordered the Photo interupter GP2s28 online, as local repair shops would not sell it to a customer. The part is only $1.05 but the shipping and handling are another $17.00. I installed the new part and it worked great for about a week, then the same problem all over again. I guess its time to look for a different brand of DVD player. Maybe I should have bought a few of the $1.05 parts so I could have used it another month or two. I am undecided now if I should try it again, or just buy a different brand. It seems that most of the units I have looked at all offer a 90 parts and labor warrantee. My experience is that its always after 90 days that the problems surface. So I guess you have to ask when you buy an item like this, if it is worth the price for 90 days.

Strength:

5 disc, zoom, good remote

Weakness:

auto load and it's a large unit.

A very good product for your dollars. i am an avid computer nerd and I burn many CD-R's and they all play perfectly fine??????? It seems strange that all the other reviews say that they can't. Anyhow it plays mine fine.
Picture quality is top notch. In fact that is what sold my on the unit. My criterias were 5-Disc and good picture for under $400. This unit filled them all. In fact, I have recommended the unit to some freinds that puchased the same brand and they were and are all still satisfied.
If you had the same creterias to fill that I did...Buy this machine. You won't be disappointed.

Strength:

Built in Dolby Decoder. 5disc Changer. Good remote.

Weakness:

Irritating autostart. Doesn't play CDr's (plays CD-RW .. and may play silver CDr's, but I haven't tried yet)

I really like this player. It plays DVDs very well. It has a good on screen setup and is easy to work with. i'd definitely recommend this player.

It doesn't skip like my Samsung used to. The remote is much much better than that of the SD6109.

I just received the player, it came in three days with no problems yet. I have a Toshiba CZ27V51 27" T.V and a Denon AVR-900 Receiver. The player is hooked up via component video straight to the TV with the supplied cables but I will replace them soon as they are pretty spindly. The picture is sharp and clear and the zoom feature is nice though I can't imagine watching a shole movie with it. This is my first DVD so I can't compare it to others but I have a nice Denon CD player and the CD's on the Toshiba sound excellent. The remote is easy to use and intuitive if not a little big. I ordered through consumer-direct.com and had great service. Their website is not very well updated but that should not be anything new if you have been on the web much. I clicked on 'speaker wire' to check on prices and it only showed banana connectors. They said you get a free T-shirt with orders over $200 (obviously mine was) and it never came but it's probably cheesy and I would have just used it for a rag anyway. The price seems very comparable and Fedex shipping is nice for the tracking system. This Toshiba unit is high quality and should be considered by anyone looking for a great value. Toshiba makes very high quality Video products and this is a fine example.

Strength:

Well thought out excellent remote, Component Video, 5 disc changer, shuffle ability for playing CD's, Zoom Feature.

Weakness:

No DTS (but my AVR 3300 Denon has one so this is minor). Odd control layout on Unit. Power and Open Close buttons look like extensions of the tray.

This unit has great value for the money. Clarity of picture rocks. The zoom feature is really handy if you dont have a wide screen TV. You can zoom in losing some of the edges of the picture but it fills the screen.

Had a 4109 previously and it didnt allow shuffle or usable random playing for CD's. This unit has it which is great. This unit is also less deep than the 4109 I had before meaning my audio cabinet doesnt have to be 24+ inches deep which was going to be a pain.

The remote has been clearly layed out with a "cute" but functional joystick on it. It feels solid in my hand and is a good size.

Good value machine got it for virtually cost bundled with my Denon AVR 3300.

I will update my review if my experience changes.

Strength:

Great video on component output, holds 5 cds/dvds, allows you to change out cds/dvds while other cds/dvds play, easy to use remote. Built in DD decoder. Parallel audio out (ie, can send digital out to reciever, analog out to TV at the same time. See review for why this is useful...)

Weakness:

Will not play CD-R's Autostart is irritating. No built in DTS decoder.

The guy at my local AV shop hooked me with this line "I hate to see you missing out with S-video on that Toshiba TW40X81... you really need to try component video..." He let me trade in my Philips DVD player + $250 for this unit. He offered me a lower grade model, but I really wanted a changer, so he offered me this one.

DVD's are truly stunning. The component video is much superior to the S-video output on the Philips unit. The menus are easier to navigate, and the player is a joy to operate. Parallel audio output (digital and analog at the same time)means I can set the unit up for the home theater experience w/ my reciever, but I can also run it thru the TV, so the wife and kids can watch a DVD w/o having to mess with my reciever-- a big plus)

On the minus side, it absolutely WILL NOT play CD-R's. For a few bucks more, you can get the 4205 w/ dts decoder that does play CD-R's. The autoplay feature kicks for disks in the machine, so if you open the tray, and you're trying to get the disk that started autoplaying, it can be a bit of a pain.

Overall, 5 stars for performance-- what it does, it does well.

4 stars for value-- a bit pricey not to play CDR's .

Strength:

Changer, HDCD audio, S-video & component outputs, price!

Weakness:

not much, a little big (could be a problem for some)

My first DVD player. The sound quality even as a CD player is AMAZING. I like the HDCD feature as an added bonus. It has all I could ever want. Since it's a changer it is fairly tall which could cause some havoc in your set-up!
