I just got this fantastic player. It seems to be a great value. I'll post more as soon as I can be more specific.

    Strength:

Outstanding picture and sound. HDCD processor, 6 CD/DVD/Video CD changer. Large bold look.

    Weakness:

Zoom function displays the word "Zoom" in the lower right hand corner which doesn't dissappear after leaving the zoom funtion on for a certain amount of time. The zoom funtion would greatly enhance the ability to watch Widescreen 16 x 9 images if not for the annoying ZOOM in the corner....

I have only had this player for a few weeks and have watched only one DVD so far, "What dreams may come". I am impressed with it's powerful color renditions and digital sound. It has enhanced black level which is underrated I believe. The black images are as thick and wet as tar which brings out the unbelievable colors. In the What dreams may come DVD, the colors are rich and saturated, no problems with jittering lines etc. DVD access and play takes very little time.
This machines ability to play CD's is what I didn't expect. I have it connected currently with only a Toslink cable which has dramatically lessened the amount of noise I had from my standard CD player connected with RCA's. And a quick listen to an HDCD was extremly impressive. Look for HDCD to take off from here. It is much less expensive to purchace an HDCD than an SACD player, and it seems to be catching on.
As posted above, this player has all of the needed hookups on back, component out, s-video etc.
I will post more info as I get a chance to test it out.

I recieved this DVD player and about a week later the disc's stopped loading no matter what disc it is. I took it to an authorized Toshiba repair center and after 3 months of them having it I recieved it back but not fixed. The center told me that it wasn't repairable and then charged me $20 bucks since they couldn't file the work under toshiba's warranty. Now I have a $250 coaster since the place I bought it from won't take it back and toshiba now won't repair the product.

The only good thing I got from this player was the about 10 dvd's that I played on it. From that I would say it is an excellent player and I wish it would work because I am not satisfied with the Pioneer dvd player that I bought.

If anyone else has had this problem could you e-mail and tell me how you got your player fixed.

    Strength:

    Great sound and picture!

    Weakness:

CD-R/VCD. All multi-disc players should show the title in the display. My 10 year old Sony CD player has this feature.

I've had this player for more than a year without a single problem.

    Strength:

HDCD, 5.1 outputs, Zoom, multi-disk, menus, black level

    Weakness:

    remote, case, refurbished poorly

This player worked perfectly out of the box until I tried to set my VCR ontop of it. Mistake. I started getting disk read errors on the system. I took the unit apart and noticed a crack on the circuit board cutting across a couple of solder runs. I took in in under warrenty and (not telling them I cracked it open), they located the break in the board and fixed it all up in less then 2 weeks. Absolutely perfect ever since. I REFUSE to place anything on top of the unit for fear of breakage but other then that, this player has been a dream.
The 5.1 output is really nice plus although I rarely use that output opting for the optical instead. No noticeable difference when using it with the 5.1/analog output then when I use the optical/digital output utilizing my receivers decoder.
The remote is rather clunky but functionally well designed as long as the lights are on while using it otherwise you WILL press a wrong button.
I tested out the HDCD function on the Shout at the Devil re-release from Motley Crue(neighbors loved me for this)and the diff was quite enjoyable.
1 year and this player is still going strong. I think I will add a 2nd player to my system that recognizes CDRW/MP3s just for audio enjoyment and let this be a pure DVD player.
I am giving this 5 stars for the price/functions and dropping off a star for the remote and cheap housing on the overall.

Won't play CD-R's, lots of trouble with DVD'd

Well, after 2 years I'm throwing in the towel. Step aside Toshiba, Sony here I come

After two years of niggling little problems with several DVD's I've had enough.

I recently took the unit in for a firmware upgrade and now it's really gone AWOL. I can no longer play the DVD's I own without the thing locking up half way through and the movies from the rental store are starting to freeze as well.

This player is easily the biggest dissapointment of any of the components in my system.
    First - no CD-R compatibility
Second - no random play between tracks on different discs
Third - the poorest reliability of any component I own
Fourth - Toshiba will not fix the problems they caused because the unit is out of warranty

On the positive side Great Picture + sound - when it plays

Bye Bye Toshiba - next stop - the Sony Store

It's a real shame because the Laser Disc player I had is still terrific - pity the design of this unit waa so poooooor !!!

    Strength:

6-disc capacity, picture quality, HDCD, zoom and angle

    Weakness:

    remote sucks

In 2 years of use, I haven't had ANY of the problems I've seen mentioned. I think this is a great DVD player, although it doesn't play CD-R. I've recommended Toshiba players to many friends, bought some as gifts for others and none of us has had any problems whatsoever.

Before buying, I did alot of research and found that the Sony product line had, at the time, a serious software bug relating to lip-sync issues, so I steered clear of their products (never really been impressed by Sony anyway).

I don't regret this purchase for a moment.

    Fronts: JBL TLX-171
    Fronts: JBL S38
    Center: DefTech ProCenter 100
Rear: Yamaha A637 (need more S38s)
Sub: JBL TLX PB10 (smoked crap) - DefTech coming soon

    Strength:

    great price at the time

    Weakness:

    Same problems as everyone else

I purchased this unit because of the price at the time. I wanted a multi-disc unit (to replace a sony 5 disc cd player)and found this to be the cheapest unit with a name I recognized on it. I always found that it took a long time to initalize a disc, but it seemed to get worse as time went on. Soon I found that it wouldn't play muli-layered discs at all and would "lock up" from time to time. I returned the unit to Toshiba Canada just under the warranty limit of 2 years (I had purchased the extended warranty). The customer rep could not have been more helpful and the unit was repaired (a firmware upgrade) and returned to me in perfect working order. I have read here that some have had problems in dealing with Toshiba, but I must say that my experience could not have been better!
    Bring on the SD4700!!!

    Strength:

Excellent picture and sound (when it works)

    Weakness:

    Doesn't play CDR/CDRW, doesn't work

When it works it works pretty good, although I find it a noisy DVD player. Unfortunately I started having continuous problems starting about 6 month after I purchased it. At first it wouldn't play certain CDs, then it progressed until it completely refused to play CDs or DVDs. It justs spins through the carousel attempting to load each disk, then finally displays a "..Disk Error.." message on the front panel display. I have already had this problem fix once, while it was under warranty. Now the problem is back, only this time it is not under warranty. I think I need to fix it, then dump it!
