Strength:

Build quality, sound and picture.

Weakness:

remote

I choose my equipment very carefully, becouse there not cheap these days.
Toshiba,Sony,Denon and Pioneer all make good top end DVD players and the differences are very little.
I first compared the Toshiba SD 900e to the Denon 3300 and the Picture on the Toshiba was much more sharp and defined,
and the Denon's quality of build wasn't the best.
The Pioneer 838 represented good value for money and the picture is good but sound lacked in detail.
The Sony is a very good unit but didn't have all the features of the other DVD players.
The picture and the sound quality on the Toshiba SD 900e are the best i have seen and it had all the features i wanted.
The Toshiba SD 900e has won so many awards and had the best reviews by so many hifi magazine i know i made the right choice.

Strength:

Excellent DVD Video + CD + DVD Audio output; well built

Weakness:

Inconvenient source inputs and switching, limited software availability

Truly an outstanding piece of equipment!

The DVD Video and CD perfromance is as good or better than anything else I have seen on the market. However, DVD Audio is the real killer.

I spend 60% of my time listening to music and I have been somewhat luke warm to music in 5.1 surround and processed through DSP's. Some of it sounds good and some not. But I am totally blown away with the few DVD Audio disks I have heard on the 9200.

The first DVD Audio (96khz/24 bit) disk I played on this unit was Beethoven's 9th Symphony (Barenboim) as this piece of music truly will test the abilities of any system. To put it mildly, I was shaken by what I heard. Not since the days of reference LP's + Linn TT's + AR tube amps + Magneplanars have I heard anything that resembles a live performance. Standard PCM CD's sound harsh and tinny to me in the high frequencies and muddy in the mid range due to the 16 bit compression they are subject to. But this recording just soared in the high frequencies, provided a clear mid and low range and unbelievable overall dynamic range. But the thing that just blew me away was the fourth movement when the baritone and tenor are coming from the L channel, the alto from the R and the soprano from the C; WOW! just like sitting in the front row. The surrounds blended in nicely too and provided just enough information to sound like the acoustics of a concert hall.

Yes, some of my enthusiasm is due to the excellent recording and mix on this DVD. But I believe that this format is here to stay and can only get better in the long run. It will be hard to go back to standard two track CD's (even HDCD's) after hearing what is possible with DVD Audio - I never thought I would ever say this being a former 2 track purist.

I believe Toshiba has winner on its hands with the SD 9200. It is a solid, high quality piece of gear and from what I have seen, the best of its breed.

Strength:

Sound and Video presentation

Weakness:

None

The system is solid! From the build quality to performance output. The disk transport and drive mechanisms are extra quiet. The progressive scan output provides an incredible DVD picture quality when combined with my HDTV. The sound quality (the main task of this unit in my setup) with the multichannel DVD-A is the type of listening that people buy DVD players. The remote control is functional and easy to use.

What can I say I would recommend this system to anyone that enjoys music or DVD videos.

Strength:

Very solidly built, looks good, plays Audio DVDs, progessive scan, great sound

Weakness:

horizontal lines rolling through picture, whole unit freezes

I want to give this DVD player a good rating, but I've had nothing but problems with it. My player is having problems similar to those described by Stan from Vallejo, CA USA, but it freezes with almost any media I try to play in it (DVD, DVD-A, CD). In addition, mine also has noticable horizontal lines rolling through the picture that make the picture difficult to look at.

I've owned this DVD player for about 8 months. It's been in a certified Toshiba repair shop 3 times and the tech has no idea what's wrong with it. I've tried contacting Toshiba support by phone and email but have yet to receive a response.

If the player worked like it did the first month I had it, I would definitely give it 5 stars. The build is solid and it weighs a ton. It physically looks good. The picture was better than I had hoped and it sounded awsome.

I will post a follow up if I ever find out what is wrong with this DVD player and it gets repaired.

Strength:

Clear, adjustable, DVD-A, HDCD, Built, Appearance

This DVD is built to last (20+ lbs). Appearance is great and functions are easy to use. Menu is well organize, tons of audio and video tweaks. Manual is a bit confusing but what else is new, I have yet to see a manual that is user friendly, complete and easy to understand. Remote is great with easy to navigate mouse in the middle.
Audio: Listening to CD is great. Gipsy King's concert comes alive with this player. Mid range is well defined, vocal is clear and ambiant sounds good. DVD-A 5.1 channel is great! I guess the higher freq. makes a lot of difference.
Video: Watching "Mummy Returns" on this player is awesome! Clear and defined pictures, motion artifacts are well captured. I like the zoom function where you can enlarge to fit your 4:3 TV a source material 16:9. Loosing a few on the edges is better than having to watch those annoying black bars. I have not yet tried the progressive because my TV automatically decodes an interlace source. I also like the memory for video adjustment. You don't just get one, but three memories to adjust contract, brightness, y gain & more.
I have used this player for less than a month and I'm impressed by Toshiba. I will post a follow up review later. This is a great overall player!

To the previous reviewer Stan. There is always an occasion that you receive a bad player. The one question that I have is "were these discs in questions rentals or did you purchase these items". The reason for this question is that I watch alot of movies and the ones I purchase never have a glitch. However, on serveral viewings from rentals you could see pixels and that digital blurriness. I think this is the best DVD player on the market in this price range. I have compared side by side the Toshiba with the Meridan and Levinson. Their was very little difference or none at all.

Strength:

Great video performance & nice audio

Weakness:

Multi-region playback?

This is a number one DVD player if one can get it below US 800.00. (www.discount.com offer even nicer deal ~ 600, but it is not sold as new product)The DVD-A is okay, but not as good as I expect. This might also due to the disk that is available these days.
The only weakness that I can think about is the multi-region playback. Unlike, Denon DVD2800, a region free DVD player (after firmware update), Toshiba can only play region 1 DVD, which is okay if you only watch region 1 DVDs.
Does anyone know how to turn this super DVD-player to be region free??

Strength:

Shipped in a high grade cardboard box, power button works extremely well to turn this "Progressive Scan" player off!

Weakness:

Delay between layer changes (no buffer), rolling so called "progressive scan" lines, tends to freeze, poor pixellation, picture distortion, no SACD, Poorly designed tray, region 1 playback only, remote doesn't support all features (manual switching), and so on!

This is a player I would expect to see on the Flintstones! You won't chatch yourself being convinced that it's true quality once you've done some comparison with other high end products! Exclusive high end audiophile and home theater retailers don't use this player to display their high end monitors because it lacks picture definition and quality. Every "state of the art retialer" I've been to uses Sony's DVP-S9000es to sell high definition monitors that cost sometimes as much as $25,000! I had the SD-9200 player connected to a Pioneer SD-582HD5 Widescreen. After about 4 months of problems with the Toshiba I purchased a Sony DVP-S900ES to replace it. There is no comparison between the two. If you're going to spend good money and want true Progressive scan quality you owe it to yourself to check out the Sony first. My wife agrees that the $829 we bought our DVP-S900es for (on Ubid) was the best money we've spent so far. Say what you want, the real state of the art world uses the Sony player to butter their bread...and impress every future customer who walks through the door! I know This will make all of you SD-9200 "progressive scam" owners mad, but go check out what I'm saying and you'll find out I'm right! By the way, Best Buy and Circuit City aren't state of the art retailers, Ya gotta look a little harder than that guys!!!

Strength:

EVERYTHING, looks very sturdy well built chasis, progressive scan dvd audio excellent menues this is the best player i have ever used and i have been through many.

Weakness:

NOTHING, except for the confusing manual but what manual isn't confusing.

i have been looking for this player all over the internet i have gone to etronics buy it.com ebay.com so just when i was about to give up on my search i went to discountsjungle.com and there it was the toshiba 9200 it was on sale for 549.99 way cheaper than everybody elses advertised price of about 700.00 us dollars so i said whats the catch; it was a factory refurbished product which didn't take away from the value at all because i own many refurbished products in fact i think they perform better than the new product itself. I was ready to buy and they said they were sold out this was in august of 2001 it is now dec and they are still sold out of it. I was mad, all this time waiting and it still wasen't in so i broke down and tried ubid I didn't want to because of the shipping cost horror stories. I found a toshiba 9200 refurbished and the bids were at 350.00 so in the end i won the auction and paid 399.99 for the item and only 27.00 for shipping. what a deal on a top notch dvd player.

toshiba has made the best dvd player on the market under 1500.00 dollars. the dvd audio is superb through its 6 channel system, the dvd video has one of the best interlaced pictures on the market (i don't have prog. scan yet) the audio is unbelievable this is just a well built player it plays everything menues are easy to read and the disk mechanism is sturdy and closes to keep dust and other air particles out of the player. overall this is one hell of a deal from a top notch company.
