Strength:

Build quality, SOUND QUALITY!

Weakness:

Chroma Bug in chip set used.

My goal in finding a DVD player was to purchase the player currently on the market with the absolute best sound quality. The SD9200 was the perfect solution. This player has received more accolades for it audio section than most CD players on the market. I'm not using the progressive scan feature, as I can not take advantage of it with my current TV.

The interlaced picture is a good or better than most that I have seen. If you looking for crystalline sound quality for both DVD's and your CD collection this is the one to buy. For a great review on its sound quality go to

At less than $700 this thing is a steal right now! Forget the high priced CD player, get a SD9200!

Sound, Progressive Scan presentation & Build quality!

I posted a review last year after I had a chance to truly evaluate the unit. The unit is outstanding in every aspect that you would want in a DVD player and it has DVD-A! In fact, I am getting ready to buy a second unit for my home theater.

Just for kicks (because I am SOLD on the unit)I looked at the reviews of this fine unit. I realize that everyone is entitled to their thoughts, but the people rating the unit 1 star must work for Sony. (Format war!)

Well, that is my thought on this excellent machine that I highly recommend!

This is a repost. Just wanted to add a few more good things about this unit. However, I also want to add to the thread you guys been posting since my last post.

First, in comparing Sony 9000ES and Toshiba SD9200, they are practically the same. What I mean is the Genesis chip they are using is the same. Fact is, Toshiba added more stuff to their player (i.e. Super Color Stream, Blacker than Black...list goes on) and Sony didn't. Bottom line, if you want more value for your money, go buy the Toshiba.

Second and to add to my previous post, I recently purchased a HDCD format CD and let me tell you, the moment I played that CD you can hear the difference from regular CD. I also purchased a CD that is encoded in 24 bit/44 khz, and using optical cable, the sound is superior. However, I wish the player upconverts it to 24 bit (it only plays at 16 bit) I wonder how it'll sound at 24. I have to buy another 2 channel analog cable to get 24 bit. (Refer to conversion table on the manual)

Overall, I'm very satisfied with this player. Hook this up via VGA input on your HDTV and you get the best, clearest, better sounding DVD player for the money. Plus tons of extra functions you can play with.

Hope this help clear some of the bickering between Sony and Toshiba. Like a cars, same engine but different performance and manufacturer. One is soupped-up for drag racing and the other just a stock. (Is it obvious, I just watch the movie "The Fast and The Furious", great movie played on this player). For those who bought this player, rejoice and be proud. For those who didn't, just eat smoke from our soupped-up car exhaust.

Strength:

Stunning audio quality, built like a tank, great remote, exceptional video quality in all modes.

Weakness:

None

Like reviewer Paul, I was looking for the DVD player with the best possible audio sound with high video quality. I will not comment on the video quality-it is exceptional like all the other posts have stated, and my current system is not doing the video capabilities of the Toshiba justice. What I will state is that this player is an audiophile-grade component- a great CD player in its own right. It completely outperformed my Onkyo DXC-530 CD changer, run through a pair of Mirage 760 floor standing speakers and an Onkyo TX-SV636 in stereo mode. On U2's 'Elevation', I was amazed at the "growl" in the guitar work in the opening sequence and the incredibly tight and powerful bass. I also tested the soundtrack of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The soundstage was noticeably larger and more defined and more musical. Glorious. My Mirage speakers have not sounded this good since I auditioned them at the audio store 5 years ago.

I played Underworld's "Live Everything" DVD in pro-logic mode (phantom center, Paradigm Titans for the surrounds), and was completely blown away. Absolutely effortless listening experience..IT SOUNDED LIVE.

I can't wait to try this out in 5.1. BUY THIS PLAYER!!!

I sort of know what you mean AJ, the progressive scan is not as sharp as the interlaced mode on my Wega 36HS20, but the general consensus is that progressive scan produces a softer, more "movie" like image ( whatever a "movie" like image is... ) I know some people prefer it that way, all down to personal preferences I guess. Still, the sd9200 is an awesome machine. Highly recommended.

Dave.

Strength:

Elegant styling. Tank-like construction. Sound! Oh that sound!

Weakness:

Progressive scan video

My sentiments align with Bob. The sound quality on this unit is second to none. (Except possibly the esoteric high-end). But I am dissapointed with the video in progressive mode. I purchased this unit because I also own a Toshiba 40H80 High Def ready widescreen TV. I thought this would be nirvana. Wrong! It looks fine in the interlaced mode but when switched to progressive, things get out of focus & there is definite 'ringing'. VERY dissapointing for a unit of this caliber. I'm hoping that an ISF calibration will help with the focusing but I don't know what to do about the ghosting. Any thoughts?????????????

Strength:

Fantastic interlaced picture, magnificent sound with CD and DVD-A, plays CD-R and HDCD

Weakness:

Noisy transport, very poor remote, digital stream downsampling.

This is more a help request than a specific review on the SD 9200 (named SD 9000 in Europe). This player is pretty much the current state of the art in what concerns DVD replay and so far no other player I know of, regardless of price, can put forward a significantly better performance than this Toshiba. However, I am experiencing problems concerning the noise of the transport in several DVD's. After a few weeks of use, my SD 9000 started to make a very noticeable noise when playng DVD's and Cd's. The disks seemed to rattle inside the tray and the problem only disapeared after the first tracks were played. My store replaced the player for a new one but after six weeks the same problem returned. Strangely, it only appears on some disks and allways at the start of the disk; sometimes, if I repeatedly open and close the disk tray, the problem disapears - if I stop the disk and restart the playing, it reapears! The most strange thing of all is that this is the second player with the same fault (very annoying when you are listening to a quiet movie or a piece of music, late at night).
Toshiba local service seems to lack the proper technicians to identify or correct the problem and I do not want to have a third player with the same problem! Has anyone already experienced the same? Any help or comments on my problem would be welcomed - I was expecting to keep this player unit as it has some exceptional qualities but I cannot find a justification for this kind of fault in a US$ 1.330 piece of equipment ( I have a entry level Yamaha in my bedroom and I cant hear any rattling or other transport noises coming from it!).

In the assumption that the above problem is specific to the two units I owned (perhaps a bad batch?), I rate the unit five stars for quality and four in what concerns value for money.

Strength:

I love this tank and everything about it. All features work great, the remote does a great job but eventually I will get all features programmed onto my Pronto remote. Picture is fantastic along with my Philips 34" widescreen, flatscreen.

Weakness:

I'm not a picky audiophile so none found yet.

Enough said above......I used this website to make my decision so thanks to all for their reviews.

Weakness:

My remote coverage is small compared to others I have used.

This player has given me the most satisfaction of all the players I have owned, which includes all of the above. the debate between SACD and DVD-Audio is pointless because they are pretty much doomed formats anyhow. If you concentrate on teh features that do matter in the real world (Progressive, CD palyback, CD-R playback) the Toshiba is the BEST DVD I have ever seen or used. I haven't used all the DVD players that exist but for the price you can pick a 9200 up for, it is THE best buy in all of audio. PERIOD.

Strength:

The best Class A CD player available under $5K. The SOUND man, the SOUND!!

Weakness:

None at this price or for it's age. Better video playback has come out, but not better sound.

This is absolutely the best CD player you can buy short of a Nakamichi Dragon. What this DVD player does for plain old stereo CDs is amazing. I've been enjoying DVD-A for quite awhile and thought I would never listen to stereo CDs again. Oh man! With this player, my stereo CDs now sound almost as good as DVD-A, or at least a whole lot better than they used to. So this is what class A is all about! Next stop, McIntosh tube amps for me!
Oh, by the way, this DVD player does a fantastic job on film based DVDs too. Even video based DVDs were nice with the DNR turned on. Not up to Farouda quality, but nice.
