Video ringing Perhaps I have not looked very hard at other "hi-end" players or perhaps I am just to analytical but looking at the image displayed using a DVD test disc, I see some real problems with hi frequency enhancement. This is often displayed as ringing (a ghost like image but is symmetrical around a vertical edge). I have looked at all the user reviews and did not see any reference to DVD test discs and player problems noticed by the use of them. I am writing my review in hopes that someone may respond with any information on this issue with any brand of DVD player. I can still return the unit but aside from this one concern I find the unit excellent in all other ways. Buy the way, the unit has edge enhancement turned on by default but even with it off (much preferred) the problem persists. When using the interlaced mode the problem is not nearly as bad but this is not a surprise nor is using the output set to interlace desirable. Progressive Scan, Super Color Stream, 5.1 DVD-A This is a repost to my previous post and a follow up. I recently bought a Loewe Planus TV to hook up this DVD. After I properly set this up using VGA input (which accepts signals 480i, 480p and 1080i) and press the Super Color Stream on the DVD's remote, pictures just come alive. I didn't know what I'm missing after viewing DVD materials on a component video (interlace input). This is a great test for me because I could really tell the difference between the two. It's very realistic, color is supreme with Black on Black turned on, and tweaks is a plus with 3 memories. This machine really performs, or rather, outperforms. It's just great to have one. player s nice, heavy, nice features, good remote nice prog scan (dependig on what aspect you have available on your television) toshiba name and reliability. i have been reading the reviews and i am astonished that anyone can rate this player badly. i work at a high end electronics store in Denver CO, i work in the audio department and watch all 4 of the products mentioned basically all day they are all hooked up to the same pioneer elite tvs throughout my department and they play the same fifth element superbit disc all day. I show customers all of these players almost all day because they are all under $1200 dollars in our store. here are the results. coming in last place out of the 4 is the sony 900s it may be rated good on this site but after seeing it for 8 hours a day you can see the difference in this player, slow operation, gets hot quick and is not as sturdy as the other players but is a good seller because of the sony name. the next is the panasonic it is overall a very good player and has one of the best prog scan pictures put there but is cheaply built and quite frankly an ugly player,(i have a very hard time selling this player because of its looks and the remote) but dvd audio on this player is top notch but not as clear as the toshiba overall very impresive player. next is the 9000es player from sony which is top end and the most expensive player of the bunch, with all the features a nice remote while putting out a good picture in prog scan mode it is just fair in interlaced mode(my friend uses one on an interlaced only tv) the only reason it is rated lower then the toshiba is that reason plus sacd stinks it sounds good but there are only 17 titles to choose from compared to dvd audios 48 plus i don't think it sounds as good as dvd audio. the 9000es has good menues but the one at our store has long layer changes and zoom problems. Solid, well built player which looks great. Very good video output. Superlative sound (DVDA + HDCD).
Weakness:
Genesis chipset / Chroma bug Now now girls. These are only opinions and everybody has the right to voice their own. But heh Doug - are you sure you were using the sd9200? 1 Star? C'mon, get real. I own this unit and it's a great piece of equipment. Even for hardcore dedicated audio videophiles alike. The fact that you can now buy it for under $700 is even more reason to get one. Like I said, opinions are just that. But this baby has had more compliments than a Baywatch swimsuit. The Sony 9000 has the chroma bug, suffers from ringing and combing, doesn't play CD-R's and has no DVDA support. Sound like a reference machine? No I didn't think so either.... none Boy the review below is a joke. He must not be using a high end display. This player is THEBEST if you are using a 16X9 TV or a projector such as a sony 10HT. I tried the sony progressiveplayer and it was not even close in quality to the 9200 toshiba! I use a Sony 10HT 16X9 projector and the picture this thing puts out in progressive mode is outstanding. Even slightly better than my 9100. But the Sony has too many flaws. The picture is not as detailed, not as accurate with colors on the sony. I would of paid $2000 for this, but got it NEW for $639. This is the DVD player to beat, even if it is a year old. Thebuild quality is also leagues above the sony. The audio is killer and it plays DVD audio. If you have a 16X9 display, believe me, this is the one to get. If you have a 4:3 non progressive TV, get a regular DVD player for $150. Similar Products Used: Toshiba 9100, SOny 9000 |

Built like a tank. HDCD, Class 'A' CD Player, DVD Audio, Video CD, CDR support, CD Text, oh yeah Incredible DVD Video too.
Weakness:
Poor Progressive Scan, Switching between Internal and External Decoder could be made easier. This DVD player is incredible. Plays every DVD I throw at it, even scratched DVDs. It even plays home made Video CD's that other players choke on, if they where even able to play them at all. Similar Products Used: Sony S3000 |
