Strength:

Basic layout. 540 lines of resolution. Exception picture and sound.

Weakness:

You can hear this drive at low volume if the player isn't behind a cabinet door.

This seems to be a well made machine with all the bells and whistles. I am confident that I will be happy with this machine. Consumer Reports rated it as a great value for the money -- I agree.

Got this player and thought it was great. I had to take it back today though. I couldn't stand the 5 secs it took to do layer changes. I couldn't stand the fact that I had to try some dvds 3 times before it would load em. The transport is load as hell, sounds like it's gonna take off and this is from 14ft away. You can hear the damn thing anywhere in the room it was in. Doesn't output 24/96 sound, even says this in the manual (big let down for me). False advertising? Best Buy evenly exchanged it for the sd-2300 though cause of the hassle and all. Now the sd-2300 is a totally different beast, a good one. This thing is great. The picture quality is like nothing I've seen before. You can actually tell a difference between this and the 1600. Sound quality is better than the 1600's too. Also, it's quite, really quite can't even hear it with my ear on the machine.

Strength:

great picture and sound, plays everything we've put into it, typical excellent Toshiba quality

Weakness:

none noted so far

This is my 3rd Toshiba product(VCR and 32" Colorstream TV) in recent years and all have been excellent. Not the cheapest products available but each represents good value. The SD 1600 was dead easy to set up even without reference to the manual and has produced outstanding sound and picture. I reckon the component output -Colorstream-helps. My daughter has tried several CDRs and all have worked OK. The blank CDR discs are mostly blue in color and were the very cheapest she could find. They were burned at 10x speed on a good HP CD burner- I don't know if that makes any difference. All the movies we've tried - all rentals- have played without problems of any kind. In summary, we like the DVD player a lot and recommend it.

Awkward remote

Thanks to the majority of you people and your reveiws, I went with this dvd player,And Am I glad I did!!! Safeway was selling them at Christmas for 159.00.After I checked the reveiws, I went back to buy it, they only had the "demo" model left so they gave it to me for 139.00.I have only good things to say about this dvd player! The pic. is crystal clear, the sound is pretty good since Im only going through my tv speakers. The zoom Feature is real nice for viewing at full screen. The remote is kinda funky the way you hold it, the batterys are in the front oppisite of my other remotes, but not a big deal.Iv'e had no noise from the disk what so ever.I'm extremely happy with it!

Strength:

Crisp picture, intense sound, ease of operation, good price, good owner's manual.

Weakness:

Remote is difficult at first, slight noise from player during operation, no S-video cord.

This is my first DVD player, and so far I believe I've purchased the right one. It was easy to set up, so I was quickly watching "saving private ryan"; a powerful and loud noise of gunfire filled the living room and I was thrilled with the depth of sound. The picture was sharp and bright with the S-video connection, but the clarity of the picture showed me things I dislike about the cheap RCA 27-inch television I have had for nearly five years. It never had an overly impressive picture and it is in bad need of a service adjustment, however that's not the fault of the Toshiba SD1600, just the television. I had a sudden moment when the laser misread the disc and the problem was cleared up after I cleaned the disc. I then tried "2001: A Space Odyssey," which worked just fine. I will return to add more as I continue to enjoy this player, but I will mention that the remote was no problem after a while, and the sound coming from the player is of no great importance listening from three feet away. I too, would like to know what the screen saver actually does when entered in the "on" position.

EXCELLENT picture and sound!

Weakness:

Won't play my cheap CD-Rs

This is the best money I've EVER spent. I bought the SD1600 for my dorm room. All I can say is that the picture is AWESOME on my parent's 36" Sharp... even without an S-Video cable. The sound, even thru the TV is good. The picture is everthing I expected and then-some. My dad says that he can't tell the difference, but I think its becuase this is the way videos are SUPPOSED to be seen!

I was disappointed that my CD-Rs didn't work, but they were cheap PNY's. Do any CD-Rs work??? I'm anxious to get back to college and hook this up to my stereo system... Bottom line: If you need a DVD player $200 or less THIS IS THE ONE!

Ease of use and setup.

Weakness:

None so far.

This is my first DVD player. I have to say that so far I am quite pleased with the performance and features for the price. I haven't had any problems playing rented DVD's or the machine locking up. I don't think the N-22 spatializer sound is all that great. It is supposed to simulate surround sound on just 2 stereo speakers. I can't really tell if it works right or not. It sounds the same to me, but my hearing is kind of bad. All in all I would highly recommend this to anyone who is buying a DVD player for the first time. You can't beat this one.

Strength:

incredible picture, incredible sound, slim design, most practicle DVD player i've seen so far

Weakness:

the Play and Menu auto command after loading DVD is confusing (i'll get used to it - definitely not a problem)

This really is a great player. I already have a reciever with all the surround sound decoding i need, and my 27" GE TV can only handle composite video input (maybe one day i'll get to use the component), so i didn't need all the extra "features" the other, more expensive players offered.
It makes no noise what-so-ever, and i noticed that the Sony players at the store made a ton of noise with discs in them. And personally, i think the remote is great and well thought out.
I have a 50+ cd player, so i don't need to use CDR's or any other cd's on it. I played a compilation video disc of one of my favorite recording artists, and besides the video being as crisp as ever, the audio was better than the Cd's of those same songs (and i'm using regular 2channel analog output).
The only other thing i noticed, which is due i'm sure to my television itself not being the best model, is the credits on movies are less sharp the smaller they are. no big deal since i don't read the friggin things anyways, and if i did, the pause clears it up. oh yeah, and the zoom is a real neat feature (i've read some reviews that said other players can't do this).
I relied on this forum to buy this player, and i'm glad i did, it was very helpful. i hope this review can help someone else.

Great sound and picture quality.

sometimes you can hear the cd/dvd spin, but not for all of em just here and there.

This is just an update. I've had the player for about 2 weeks now. Toshiba customer service is the "bomb." I sent em an email and got a reply in less than 24 hours. This player is great. It rivals some of the more expensive models I used. The sound and picture you get from this little beast is amazing. You can actually see and hear the difference from a different dvd player to this one. This player is just so amazing. I'll update again when I get done watching all my movies.
