Strength:

Zoom feature, easy to use, quality, price

This has to be the best dvd player out there. If its your first or fifth player, everyone would be happy with this. You can not go wrong with the 1600. I had the 2150 & noticed that I did not use the dual disc, that is the only reason I got rid of it. That & I knew the the 1600 was identical. The zoom feature works great to get rid of the letterbox lines, when viewing a dvd, you lose a small amount from the sides but it beats the blank screen. All in all functions are easy to do. Operation is very simple as well as setup. The player is considerable quiet, when compared to the sony. Load time is also quite fast. Plays music cds & cdrs like a champ too. I would have like an optical output, but you get componet video, so its all good. Espically if your a first time buyer,,THIS IS THE PLAYER TO GET!

Strength:

Awesome picture quality, user-friendly hardware menus / options.

Weakness:

Loads disc menus a bit slowly and noisily. Light-weight, cheap-feeling remote.

After returning my Samskip DVD-611 and getting this player instead, I am now a very happy DVD watcher. I watched the two movies that caused the Samsung to skip, and one new one, and did not see once instance of skipping. Happy day.

In comparison to the DVD-611, this seems to load disc menus a little bit slower and with more noise, but it's only a second or two more, and does not affect the actual movie in any way. I did not notice any spin noise while watching movies.

The pop-up text for options during the movie (such as when you're changing audio tracks or subtitle settings) have numbers in front of each of the options (unlike the Samsung), so it makes it a little easier to deal with those disks that have four different English tracks.

The remote's button layout is nice, but (like most new remotes) is a little too light-weight for my taste (but now I'm just nitpicking).

I am very happy with this player, and would recommend it to anyone needed a DVD player.

Strength:

Crisp picture, good sound, FF/REW speeds, Zoom

Weakness:

Single-disc player, audio outputs

First DVD. Wife bought weeks ago as Xmas present. She bought the Toshiba-2105(?) last year (dual tray, Dolby 5.1) but I returned it (dumb move on my part).

Anyways, after checking-out the other reviews and prices, I would agree with many people that this is an absolutely awesome system for the beginner into the DVD realm. Goes beyond quality boundary (no complaints here). I've already started removing old VHS tapes to make room for DVDs.

Next system, I'll definitely spend more for:
- Dolby 5.1 outputs
- multi-disc tray

For now, no complaints.
Also, having hooked-up the S-video makes all the difference in the world. Now, to work on the sound and a wide-screen T.V.

Strength:

Great Picture and Sound Quality. Reads CD-R's.

Weakness:

Sometimes you can hear the cd/dvd spin.

I would just like to say WOW. The JVC sucked ass and I will never be purchasing any JVC product again. Their customer support sucks and their dvd players suck worse. I got the toshiba about 2 days ago. watched about 6 movies so far. Picture is sharp, bright and clean using the component to my panasonic tv (which I love and live by). The sound is also astounding to my Sony 845. I could have never thought there was this big of a different between even dvd players. It's like I'm stepping into a whole new world. I think I like this new world =) Needless to say it's a great dvd player. I have tried other higher priced models in the 500 to 1k dollar range. I seriuosly came to believe that the sd1600 matched them and beat some in sound and picture qualtiy. So I couldn't justify spending that much more for a worse product.

Strength:

Good picture and sound quality for dollar value.

Weakness:

Won't play certain DVD's.

Received the Toshiba 1600 as a Xmas gift. Our first DVD player.Seems to play Pokemon movie OK, but not the Art of War.Is everyone experiencing this problem, and if so, is there a remdial fix available in a software upgrade from Toshiba? We don't plan on viewing Pikachu only on this unit. It's posible we may return it and pay difference for a better upgrade. We will explore alternatives to this product in the future.

Strength:

Component Output, Black Level Enhancement, simple and intuitive setup, outstanding price and value for the feature set.

Weakness:

No optical output for sound. No option for manually editing out scenes (I am reaching here).

My living room is rather large so spinning noise of the DVD is not an issue, although I have noticed it while using DVD menus. I believe that this is typical for DVD Players, in general (there may be exceptions but I am certain that the price tag reflects that). I was a little bit leery of paying only $150 for a DVD Player, especially when I was buying it from a grocery store of all places (they were having a close-out from a promotional stunt so, I couldn't resist). I can recommend this player without hesitation. Video and audio quality are outstanding (I am using component video on a JVC 32D201 and 2-channel analog for Dolby Pro-Logic Surround with a Sony STR-D1011S). I do not use this player for playing music CD's so I do not have any input to give there.
I have played Mission Impossible 2, X-Men, Return to Me, Big Daddy (what a crapper of a movie) and The Wizard of Oz without incident. The only movie that I had a problem with was October Sky (I just tried to find the scene where this occurred but I cannot recall exactly which scene did this...it was during the last 25% of the movie). I believe that this was just a glitch with this particular DVD as it was a scene that was a close up shot of two people with a static background (no movement, no special effects so the player was not being taxed out). In this particular scene, the video became extremely pixelated and the sound was cutting in and out for approximately 1-2 seconds. I rewound and played it again and it reoccurred. After watching the movie I did examine the DVD and it had a pretty major finger print on it and some ugly scratches so this was probably the contributing factor. I only mention it as a pre-cautionary note. I firmly believe it to be a one time glitch.
My father-in-law purchased a Toshiba DVD Player (SD2109?) that had a nice feature that I don't believe anyone would use except me and that is the ability to edit out unwanted scenes and save that for future use. This way you can edit out scenes with the overly used and completely useless feature of nearly all R-Rated movies: the F-Word (or any other offensive scenes that you would like to edit out for a movie that you would like to watch repeatedly). The 1600 does not offer this feature. It was $75 cheaper than the 2109 so that's comparing apples to oranges.
Overall, outstanding picture and sound for an unbeatable price. I am not even close to being disappointed.

Strength:

S-video, Coax, weight, price, image and sound quality

Weakness:

none, only hold one disc

to sum things up, if you really want a good DVD player for a cheap price you should go get the Toshiba SD-1200. The image quality is amazing once you hook up the S-video output, and the sound is just near perfection (coaxial). The player looks great, it's very light and easy to use. it only costed my $300 canadian plus it came with 3 free DVD's (excellent!)

So, support this fine Toshiba product, it's cheap and it's very crystal clear in both image and sound.

Weakness:

No Optical Out

Firstly the difficulties this unit was having with TVA movies (the only notable release being Art of War which sucked) was remidied in 1 day.

I have a cd player so I dont use this unit for cdr but I do use this unit for all my CDRW discs because my cd player doesnt play those and it works fine.

I would prefer to use optical over the coax cable; however, the coax sounds just dandy. (optical connections eliminate the need for a demodular stage)

I really enjoyed the free three DVD movies that I got with this unit. I dont see the need to upgrade until I cough up enough dollars to buy a progressive scan TV then I will buy the sd9100.

Strength:

Cost, brand name.
OSD is nice

Weakness:

Restarts from beginning when powered down.
Very slow seek times.

When powered down, system does not have capability to store the location of the movie. Upon restart, the system starts over. If you're watching a movie and would like to start from where you left off, you must press stop and leave the system on. Major black eye. Even at $170, this feature is a must. I have a Pioneer 333 in another room and it does store your ending point. It's nice for my kids, since they can easily begin their movies where they left off. I've posted this concern on "Tech Talk" and received a response from another Toshiba owner who confirmed this issue.

Toshiba also has much slower seek time when operating the menu features. Pioneer is much faster.

For another $30 bucks, Pioneer is a much better system. You'll spend more in electricity bills over time by leaving Toshiba on. Manual is very vague about this subject. It never confirms or denies this feature. I'm returning it to Costco and will visit Best Buy for the Pioneer.

Strength:

Excellent picture, great sound, nice built and design

Weakness:

cheesy remote, long load times on some dvd

My first stab at dvd was with the RCA 5215p. Believe it or not, this was a nice unit. But the unit hung up on me three times in less than 2 weeks! I also noticed some distortion and noise on some dvds (I have a Samsung TXF2899- awesome TV!) After some extensive research, I found out the RCA was otherwise average and failed various tests (I should have known better). Good thing Radio Shack has a 30 day money back gurantee! Behold the 1600- this is THE must have dvd player. It looks so sharp and clear on my 800 line res flat screen ;-) Amazing picture! The sound is just as good. Who cares if it can't play CD-R or MP3- it focuses on maximum dvd output for watching movies! The remote needs better functionality, ergonomics, and perhaps glow. Toshiba needs to work on the GUI (RCA 5215p by far has the best graphical interface on any player). Your research is over- buy one now! Good job Toshiba!!
