Strength:

Plays all media I can throw at it, good dirty/scratched CD/DVD reading capabilities, small footprint, good build quality, strong and logical remote, HDCD, great CD audio performance, cheap.

Weakness:

Noisy motor, no MP3 or JPG decoder.

Small, well-built player with intuitive, strong remote and good on-screen menus. Plays all CD formats (CD-R/W, HDCD), and since I bought it primarily as a replacement audio CD player, I did not care about the MP3 and JPG "fluff" at the time. I''ve developed a need for JPG and MP3 formats on my A/V system since then and was about to ditch this player for the "disposable" Apex 5131 I bought, but direct audio comparisons clearly show that this Toshiba is in a whole different league. For audio, the 2700 is clear, layered, with a focused sound stage and great detailed reproduction of music from old country to modern rock alike. It seems to improve upon my old audio-only CD players, in fact. I thought this was due to the HDCD circuitry (see www.hdcd.com), but in comparison, the cheap Apex 5131 (also HDCD compatible) sounds veiled, compressed and narrow. So overall, this 2700 gets very high marks on audio CD reproduction! Video quality is very good, I''m using the S-VHS cable to feed an ''88 Mitsubishi monitor. I''m not as qualified to compare video performance, though, so I''ll just say that it appears more than good enough for any DVD I care to watch. Menus are clear and fast, and the FF an REW functions are glitchless (unlike the Apex which throws LOUD chipmunks at you when you FF a CD!). ;-) Needless to say, I will be keeping this 2700 as my primary audio and DVD player. The only drawback is it''s noisy motor, but I live in an urban environment so I really don''t hear it unless I sit right next to the player. And it is a tad slow at loading, but not slow enough to annoy me.

Strength:

Stable clean picture

Weakness:

Remote not backlit

I purchased this unit on the Internet along with an Onkyo receiver. The Toshiba is quiet with a rock solid clear crisp picture. It isn't fancy but it delivers flawless playback of all DVD titles. The remote is a bit small but it is well laid out. The only complaint I have of the remote is it isn't backlit which makes it diffult to find the function keys in the dark. It's a big complaint, but even my Onkyo receiver a TX-DS494 doesn't have a backlit remote. I guess at the lower price points this is not in the cards.

Sound and video setting are selectable from menus accessable from the remote control. Video setting allow for normal viewing, enhanced black level, 2 movie settings, one increases brightness and the other to deepen colors. There also there is an animation setting to raise the contrast level.
Audio has three settings of which one enhances dialogue. It
only works on Dolby Digital with the audio out set to PCM. There also is a setting to restrict dynamic range of DVD movies.

If some is looking for a low priced DVD player with terrific performance this player is a must see.

Strength:

Picture and audio quality, value, ability to play lots of media types.

Weakness:

None so far.

I've had my SD-2700 for just over three months now, after having read the reviews on this website. I am fairly puristic when it comes to my sources. I wanted a DVD player that would play HDCDs as well as CD-Rs, DVDs, and VCDs. This one met those qualifications.

About a week after I began reading the reviews and playing with the idea of purchasing a new DVD player, my old ProScan DVD player died. I flew to Mr. Toad's Stereo to pick up my new SD-2700, but they didn't have any in stock. So they loaned me a SD-1600 until mine came in. I have to admit that if I didn't care about being able to play CD-Rs or HDCDs, the SD-1600 would be fine!

After mine came in, I brought it home, connected it to my Yamaha RX-V596 receiver and began breaking it in. I noticed another user is having compatibility problems with his Toshiba DVD player and Yamaha receiver. I am using an optical cable to connect my units with absolutely no problems.

My SD-2700 is quiet enough to not be annoying. In fact, the only noise I ever notice is when I put a disc in and it begins "spinning up".

I was always skeptical of claims that one DVD player really produced a better picture or audio than another, but to my surprise, it's true!

I just wish that my ProScan 32" tv would hurry up and die like my ProScan DVD player did so that I wouldn't feel bad about spending the money on a wide-screen Toshiba TV! I'm sure the picture quality would be that much better if I upgraded TVs.

As for the remote, I used it for a few sessions until I got my Pronto reprogrammed. It was pretty annoying to use. But then again, I've been using a Pronto for about 2 years, so I find most any "factory" remote annoying. I must say that the Toshiba remote is much, much better than the Yamaha remote that came with my receiver.

Anyway, I highly recommend this DVD player. I haven't seen anything in its price range that compares. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

Strength:

Outstanding picture quality (using with component cables), excellent audio, CDR & HDCD playback, looks good, plays scratched DVDs and CDs, great entry level DVD.

Weakness:

No mp3 playback (which is now added to the new SD2710) and I wish it defaulted to showing the track number and not the track time for CD playback (or displayed both), but it is only one key press to change (FL Select).

I have had the Toshiba SD2700 for about 4 months so far. I bought it from A&B Sound for CDN$300. I have it connected to a Panasonic 27D11 TV with a good set of component cables and a older Sony 2-channel receiver and Bose 301 speakers. We use it primarily for DVD and CDR playback.

I have been impressed with this DVD player on all levels. The picture quality is very good and the audio is crisp and clean. I have been especially impressed with the playback of scratched CDs and DVDs. I have been able to play back CDs with this unit flawlessly that I can not play in anything else with out skipping or giving a read error. It has also played back all the CDRs I have thrown at it. We rent most of our DVDs (2 or 3 a week) and they all play back perfectly even when scratched or dirty.

I wish I had waited a few months for the 2710 with mp3 playback, but...

I see some reviews have complained about the remote and loading time. I do not see a problem with either. The remote has all the necessary features, is laid out well, and works from most angles. The loading time has never been an issue for me. It is usually already playing by time I get the TV swithed over to Aux(DVD) or sit down on the couch. It is also relatively quick to skip between songs on CDs.

Overall I am very impressed with this DVD player and recommend it (or the newer Toshiba SD2710) to entry level DVD purchasers.

Strength:

Video, Audio quality, DTS and DD5.1 compatable, 4X Zoom, Component and S-video and Optical inputs, plays CD-R's, DVDR's, VCD's and HDCD's, handles scratched discs very well, black level adjuster. Low price. Quality built.

Weakness:

None for this price. Only small gripe would be it does not play MP3 discs but in my case, that is not even an issue.

*This review is of the 2700 model*

Best overall DVD player in this price range. The picture quality is superb, while the audio is just as accomadating. Very easy to connect to your HTS and is easily accessable. The remote is more than fine in my opinion and works well. The player is fairly quiet while playing discs and has many options for your viewing and listening pleasure. Plays scratched rental DVD's better than most players. Overall this player is the best bang for your buck. If you are in this price range, you cannot ask for a more quality and reliable player.

I was looking for an entry level DVD player and had narrowed my choices down to the Toshiba SD2700 & Pioneer DV-343. I decided to buy the Toshiba based on the reviews here, and I'm glad I did. The price was great too, $135 including shipping(Amazon was running a special on their website, $179 with $30 instant rebate plus $15 online coupon plus free shipping)! Picture is great even on my late 80's 26 inch RCA(I know, I need a new TV). I don't think you can go wrong with this DVD player, especially at this price.

Strength:

Plays DVD/CD/MP3/VCD/HDCD/CDR/CDRW and probably even plays playstation games (joke). This DVD player plays virtually all media formats.

Weakness:

If there is a weakness, I'd say the load time.. Sometimes you have to wait a whole 3 seconds to load a CD.

Besides of being able to play all the formats i threw at it, it plays the images extremely clear. The 4X zoom feature is great, and you dont lose quality when zooming.
One thing I dont like about it, is the fact that the random shuffle for the MP3 playback isnt very good. It tends to repeat the same songs often. The random function could be improved.

Strength:

1)Optical audio out
2)Unit is compatible with CD-R/RW and is slim design (fits into almost any free space you have left)
3)Price!
4)Quiet operation

Weakness:

Stopping is slow when forward and rewind searching. Autostarts are annoying. So is the tiny remote.

Manufactured in March 2001 (2000 was only option in the review posting). Reasonably priced. Great picture quality. Optical audio output for my CDs and concert DVDs. I didn't have much room left to put a DVD player. This thing fits right in there. The quality of the audio and video outweigh my complaints. It's quiet too! Any of the ones I saw in the stores had a mild hum if you listen closely. I live in an apartment. I don't want hum. My neighbors don't want hum. I want my music. My neighbors want sleep. Add this to a Denon AVR-1601 receiver for an affordable and respectable home theater solution.

Sound and scratch resistant

Remote

Well I was a little sceptical of the claims that this player would be able to handle scratched disks, but it turns out to be more than true. It was fabulously true. I actually purchased the SD2705 which is the 5 disk changer version of this player and it turns out to be just the player that I was looking for. The remote sucks but that's ok since I have a learning remote with my Denon receiver. What a difference this player has made in the sound that I get from my system. Music and movies all sound great.
