Strength:

Terrific picture, amazing Digital and DTS sound, true black, plays HDCD's, lots of nice features like angle, zoom, and picture/sound enhancements

Weakness:

Doesn't exactly stop on a dime when you're going backwards/forwards while watching the movie, doesn't play MP3's

I've been watching Toshiba's low-end DVD market for a while, waiting for the price to be just right. I almost bought the SD-1600, then the SD-1700, but I finally ended up buying the SD-2700 for $179 shipped. What a terrific DVD player. In terms of functionality, I just want to watch DVD's - I've already got a Sony ES CD player that plays CD-R's and CD-RW's and if I want to play MP3's I just plug in my laptop and pull up a songlist.

As for just playing DVD's, this player is awesome. It plays scratched rental DVD's just fine. The picture is incredible - especially through component video (Toshiba calls it Colorstream) to a TV if you can do it. The Dolby Digital and DTS sound (output as a bitstream through a fiber optic cable to my receiver) is intense. The player itself makes very little noise.

There's just no going back to VHS (I have Toshiba's top 6-head VHS VCR from 1999-2000, the W708, which is great but not like a DVD). If you pause the movie and then want to fast-forward or reverse, it will overshoot a few frames when you let go of the button, but it's a small price to pay for such high-quality picture and sound, and is the only "flaw" I've found so far.

Strength:

2715 5-Disk CD-R/RW MP3
Stops on a dime!!! Price!!! Very quiet during playback

Weakness:

Slow loading

This is for the new 2715 5-Disk Changer from Toshiba.
If you'll read the first review in this column (2700) you'll see that I've been through several units in my quest for the best bang for the buck.

After spotting this new unit on Costco's website I couldn't resist. I sold my 2700 on E-bay and told Costco to ship it.
Much larger than the 2700 and much slower to open and load, but once it gets going, it's hard to stop the enjoyment. My testing is not entirely complete, but so far so good.

It is quiet while playing, will let you remove disks while playing, will stop when you press play during fast-forward (won't skip a frame or two ahead/back), has controls on the front panel so you don't NEED the remote like before, and the display is much more generous (it shows track and time for both DVD and CD.

This unit will play MP3, but alas not randomly (when is someone going to get this right???) The on screen display for MP3 is nice; showing a full 13 characters of title and this unit even has a little knob that lets you scroll through the titles to make a selection.
So far it hasn't skipped or had pixelization problems, but not thoroughly tested yet. If it's anything like the 2700 I'll be happy.

Well worth the price IMHO.

*Same hook ups in back as the 2700, but the power cord is not removable.

I hope this helps you make a somewhat educated decision and feel free to e-mail with questions. BTW Costco will sell to non-members for a 5% mark-up. With $7 shipping it's still a bargain @ below $220

Strength:

Great picture, HDCD, composite video,CDR, memory of where you left off, price

Weakness:

None thus far.

Well this was my first DVD that I have owned myself. The others listed above were ones that I've had a lot of experience with and setup for other people. I chose Toshiba because of quality and it had the features I wanted, and even some I didn't. I especially like the feature where you can stop a movie and turn off the DVD player and all you have to do is hit play and it will play from the exact spot where you left off. As an entry level DVD player I would say that it's a great buy and interms of picture quality, ease of use, and features. You get a lot of bang for your buck and you won't be disappointed if you buy it.

Remote

My first DVD. Not bad for a first choice. Didn't even think about it. Just walked into the store, let the salesman talk me into it. He said Consumer Reports rated this one high because of the repair history or the lack of it thereof. I didn't really care since I don't have a TV with component inputs but it does S Video inputs. I had just bought myself an OnkyoTXDS595 sound system with RM6600 Polk Audio speaker package including a Polk PSW350 subwoofer. All I have to say is that if you use a DVD player, you've got to invest in a sound system including a subwoofer. It's really half the experience. If you play DVD's and go into language or set up you'll notice the choices you have for which sound to choose from. I've got my connections on digital Coax and I'm blown away even then. Too bad I don't have a nicer TV to support the picture quality that the DVD puts out. Can't say much about the remote. It's hard to get used to. Luckily I don't have to use it much while I'm watching the show. All in all, I think I got a good deal so far (three weeks.) I've been playing movies on it almost everyday since I got it. Like I said before, the picture is only half the experience. I'm happy with this player. Since I've only had my TV (32")for about two years now, I'll just keep watching all those new releases with that special sound on them until I can truly enjoy the digital quality on HDTV. Hopdefully by then everything we watch will have that DVD quality over the air waves. I wanted to get a DVD Audio player but there just aren't enough disks out there yet to warrant paying such a cost. When the new TV comes then those audio players will be more affordable. 'Till then, happy trails. By the way, 4 stars is a very good product and a great deal!!

Wonderful picture and sound -- as long as it kept working

Weakness:

Confusing on-screen menus, lousy remote -- AND THIS IS MY THIRD TOSHIBA DVD TO BREAK!!!

Based on the recommendations from this board, I originally purchased a Toshiba 2150 (the one that can hold two discs). I loved the machine -- especially the sound through my decent home theater setup -- but within the first eight weeks, the laser pickup stopped working (Disk Read errors with every disk). Toshiba promptly replaced the unit, but the NEXT unit also died within about eight weeks. After an extended negotiation (I was beyond the ORIGINAL 90-day warrantee, and I argued the clock should have been reset), they agreed to replace my unit with the 2700. I enjoyed the machine, but missed the two-disc capacity. But within a MONTH(!), the unit simply died while I was watching it. No power at all. And a rental DVD was trapped inside. I don't know if there's a problem with me and DVD, but I'm a little disgusted with Toshiba, although their customer service people have been completely first rate, and have agreed to refund my entire purchase price upon return of the machine. I understand people have had great luck with these machines, and love them to death. Me? I'm trying to figure out a better way to go for my next (and hopefully last, for a while) DVD player.

NOTE: this is for the 2705

Mechanism works fine (we even accidentally left a disk in there while moving the machine and got it out without jamming), picture/sound seem good (although I'm no expert), pretty quiet (although not as quiet as the amazingly silent Sony models that we saw in the store, it's not at all distracting or noticeable...you have to concentrate in order to hear anything), many others I'm sure

Weakness:

remote is not optimal...but wouldn't you rather they skimp on the remote than on the picture or sound or mechanics?

annoying () icon (as in no smoking, no eating, no you-can't-press-that-button-now) that appears on the screen when you press, for example, the skip button during the FBI warning...I think it's the same for all Toshibas

it is very slow to turn on, start reading a disk, and to skip disks...but doesn't seem slow to skip to chapters or do anything from the menu

This is for the 2705; the 5 disk-changer version of the 2700. We used this forum extensively before buying, so it's time to give a little back.

We've been very happy with this player (bought first week of July). We watched as many rentals as possible (averaging about 4/wk) during the 30-day return policy. The only problem was on the first rental (X-Men...just cause there seem to be a lot of complaints with that movie)...see my posting in TechTalk on July 3rd. It skipped back a chapter, but only during the first viewing...seems like a chance occurrence. We've watched many movies since, both new and rented. No real problems with anything.

I give it 4 out of 5 because nobody's perfect...we couldn't be happier with our purchase

$149! The SD2700 is a fantastic value. I purchased this unit for my 4 year-old daughter to use with her Disney DVD's and have ended up switching it into my Home Theater. Plenty of people prior to me have gotten into numerous details about this unit. Therefore, I'll just say that I am blown away that $149 can buy a unit so capable of producing tremendous video/audio quality. It replaced my Sony DVPC600D and cost FAR less. Could it be any better? Of course...but 95% of users will be very satisfied. I'm very finicky about things like this and I'm fat and happy.

Weakness:

None at this time. I've seen complaints about the remote but I'm okay with it.

Get one and enjoy!

Strength:

Good sound. Not as smooth/airy as my NAD 541, but good for the price.
Picture is stable and well defined.

Weakness:

None

Died on the 90th day. We burned the CD player section in for a solid 100 hrs to help the sound. If we hadn't of done that, we may have had to pay for the repair. Three components in the power supply needed replaced. Toshiba sent 1 component and after 5 weeks the repair tech used "will-fit" parts to replace the other two failed components. We have a Panamax 1000+ surge protector so I do not believe that a surge caused the failure. None of our other electronics have had problems. Also the repair tech stated that a surge problem usually takes out added components down-line. This was the first power supply problem the tech had seen in this model. Up to the time it died it worked flawlessly. I have just got it back and it is working fine. Durability is my concern now and only time will tell.
As part of the zoom, I like the shrink function, it gives a more side-to-side image on some full-size formats.

Strength:

Picture, Sound, features, and most of all the price!

Weakness:

None at all. If I had to think of one it would be that the remote does not glow in the dark. I have hit the stop button by mistake while watching a couple of movies in the dark, but just hit play and you are right back to where you left off.

I purchased the SD-2700 on December 23 2001 and I paid $179 dollars for it. I have three more weeks to return it for a full refund so I am watching for it to go on sale. The store I got it from will beat my best price so I am sure I will end up paying about $139 bucks for it. Now on to my review, I have watched about seven movies with it so far and all I can say is the quality of the picture and sound is excellent!!!!!!!! I even watched the Matrix without any problems what so ever. I have it hooked up to my 32 inch Sony Trinitron with just the basic RCA jacks and the picture and sound is just flawless. I have a 500 watt Dolby Prologic Sony reciever that I can also hook it up to but most of the time I just use the TV sound which is also surround. I like many others here have done my research and am very glad I went with the Toshiba SD-2700.

If you are looking for a DVD player that has alot of great features, but most of all gives you a great picture with some clean crisp sound and that will not cost you an arm and a leg, then give the Toshiba SD-2700 a try. I am certain that you will be very glad you did.

PS: Happy New Year to you all!!!!!!!!!

Great Picture, Great Sound, HDCD, CD-R compatibility

Weakness:

Not Progressive Scan

Toshiba has done it again. This cannot be beat at this price range. The picture quality is the same as my older Toshiba which was an excelllent performer in its day. S-Video output is equal in quality to the component video out.

HDCD is a nice touch and only Toshiba offers it at this noticprice range. I've tried this feature on the two Neil Young CD's I have. There is a very noticeable difference when listening to HDCD's. Its a vinyl like experience!!!

Its slow on loading but acceptable. Definetely a "best buy" for 2002 model year
