Strength:

Seems to work great, and it cost less than I thought

Weakness:

None so far

This is my first dvd player, and I've had it for two days. So far, so good. The picture and sound (as tested on Shrek and America's Sweethearts) work great. And, I am very pleased with the price that I paid. (I was considering other Toshibas, JVCs, and Sonys that cost more). Price is important to me, because I'm not the type of viewer who can see differences in the pictures of players in the $100-350+ price range, although I've never watched a really expensive player.

I bought it to watch movies, not to listen to music, so I don't particularly care how well it plays CDs or that it doesn't play MP3s. I have a fairly new analog NTSC tv, so I decided not to spend extra bucks on progressive scan. If I buy a digital tv, I'll think then about getting a new dvd player.

Installation and setup were easy, once I figured out that I had to re-jigger the tv's component input in order to have color pictures.

All I have to do now is wait for my Laz-E-Boy to arrive!

Strength:

Great picture quality, HDCD, solid mechanical construction

Weakness:

read below

I bought this player along with my Toshiba 27AF41 flatscreen tv about 6 months ago. The picture quality using a component video cable is excellent. I was very happy with the purchase of this player until recently, when it failed to power up. From reading below, it is apparent that there is a problem in the power supply design of this player. This seems to be its only flaw, and once it is fixed I expect to live happily with it for years to come. Luckily, a problem like this usually occurs when the product is new, so it would most likely be under warranty. This player would be 5 stars for sure if not for the flaw. If you are in the market for a DVD player, buy the next generation of this player when it comes out. I'm sure its performance will be equally impressive and of course, the error will be corrected.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE SD-2715 5-DISC WITH MP3 CAPABILITY

Plays anything you put in it
good sound and picture
solid build
quiet
every output you need
customer service

Weakness:

Extremely slow to read discs, change discs, skip tracks/chapters, especially when using the remote
remote is not the best
audio keeps playing when you FF through audio CDs

I bought the 2715 from costco for 200 plus a 20 dollar markup for not being a member or something like that. I hooked it up to my receiver, but I got no audio signal for over a minute. Then whenever I skipped tracks or fast forwarded or did anything, the audio would cut out and take another minute to come back. I called Toshiba and they were very helpful. I sent it back and got a new one with no problems or money lost. The new one works fine. This is a great DVD player if you're looking for something that will play any type of CD you put in it. The MP3 capability is nice, but could use some perfecting. It only reads the first 8 characters so it is sometimes hard to tell what song you are selecting. It could also use a better random play option. But for the money and for the options, I would highly recommend this DVD player. It does everything it says and does it well. There are very few other players that offer a 5 disc changer with MP3 capability. The only one I know of for sure is the Panasonic DVD-CV36.

Strength:

Audio quality. Plays scratched rental DVD's with no problems. Compact size allows it to be placed in a shallow shelf if necessary.

Weakness:

Long load time.

Overall, a good product at the price. Discs load slowly, which is really not a problem so much as an annoyance. I would prefer the default setting for the display to be the track number. Mine locked up during disc unload and had to go back to store from where I purchased the product. The dealer service has been horrible! The replacement component was on hand but the DVD player sat untouched in the store for eleven days. It has been eighteen days now and I still do not have it back. I became angry with the dealer and the owner had the unmitigated gall to get nasty with me! So much for customer service.

Easy hook up and picture and sound

I took back my Sony NS 300 because it just didn't seem to fit my wants. After talking to the sales person on the Sony and the 2700 He recommended I go with the 2700 because it had more features and it was a good 50 dollars cheaper. I took it and boy am I happy The soud is great The picture is clear and the remote is not all that hard> Blacklite would of been nice on the remote but for the price I can't complain.
I like the zoom feature and the selection on the audio and video. The instruction booklet is laid out fairly well and is easy to understand. This is really a nice CD player. Glad I took the Sony back and followed the salesman's advice.

Excellent player for the money, I paid $350.00 for the Sony and it is garbage! I have had nothing but problems with it from day one. I have the Toshiba hooked up to a Samsung 27" HDTV using component inputs and the picture is beautiful. If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive DVD Player, then I would definately recommed this one.

Everything... picture quality, hook-ups, features

I wish people would stop whining about the remote so much. Any remote you get isn't going to be laid out how you want it. If that's the only thing you can complain about then it's an excellent purchase. All the functionality is there and any moron should be able to use it! This player has an incredible picture, plays beat up discs, and has all the features and hook-ups you need. It's a total bargain.

Strength:

Plays any format you throw at it (except Mp3). Picture quality

Weakness:

small buttons on the remote. Some noise during playback.

When it came time to buy an entry level DVD player I looked at the offerings from Sony (no CDR/W), JVC (questionable quality from other reviewers on this site), Panasonic (plays Mp3's) and Toshiba. I had narrowed it down to the Toshiba and the Panasonic. I chose the Toshiba because the price was right. I paid $149 at uBid and Toshiba threw in ten free DVD rentals and uBid threw in a $20 rebate for being a first time successful bidder. With a deal like that I couldn't miss. That means the player really only cost $115 shipped.

I only have a pro-logic receiver but the sound is still incredible, I keep trying to convince my wife that we really are missing out on a true movie theater experience, I have almost convinced her.

As for the picture, I have this player hooked up to my JVC "D" series by way of component video. I cannot believe the picture quality. I am honestly blown away.

The only drawback to this player is that it makes a fair amount of noise, but so do all the players that I looked at, and I keep it behind glass so it isn't really an issue anyway. The other issue is that the remote basically sucks. The buttons are small and close together and I cannot program the remote on my receiver to run the darn thing. That's o.k. the remote on the Onkyo receiver that I will be buying in the future will get the job done.

Strength:

6-level zoom

Weakness:

One button for skip chapter/fast forward
Distracting screen display

I just traded my Sony DVP-NS300 in for the 5-disk version of this player (Toshiba SD-2705), but I'm not entirely pleased. I upgraded only to get zoom, as we have a mere 19" Proton TV (for now), and the widescreen format of most DVD's cut the viewing space down to nothing. The zoom feature is GREAT, and I like that it is multi-level. One click formats the picture to full-screen without too much distortion in quality.

There are a few things I'm not satisfied with, though, especially after using the Sony DVP-NS300. The remote is aggravating. Not only is it small, but it is not well planned. The fast forward/skip chapter buttons are one in the same, which means if you want to fast forward, you need to press and hold down the skip. If you forget to press hard enough or long enough, it skips to the next chapter, and you have to go back and find where you were. I just can't seem to get used to this feature, and it almost has me making a trek back to BestBuy for a refund. I'm not impressed with the sound compared to the Sony, although I don't have it hooked up to my stereo system. Also, I find the screen display large, clumsy and annoying. For example, if you hit pause, there is a big " display that takes up 1/16 of the screen with a big blue background. Why is this necessary?

In short, I would take this back in a heartbeat if I could get the Sony DVP-NS300 exactly as is WITH THE 6-LEVEL ZOOM FEATURE. Right now, my options are limited in this price range. It's alright for a first time buy, especially for someone with a small TV, but I wish SONY would come out with zoom, already!
