Reliability

Weakness:

No MP3 playback, Not as exact in FF or RR as some

After an extensive search for the right DVD player, I have settled on this new 2001 model. I began with the Aiwa - too slow and no random MP3 playback (but the multi-region capability is nice). I moved on to the new Panasonic RV31 - fast, quiet, but couldn't handle scratches well. I tried this unit, the Toshiba 2700 with the same scratched disks - not even a burp, and as I rent most of my DVDs (Blockbuster/Hollywood Video) I needed a unit that could take them in stride. This unit does.
My first unit was a Toshiba 2109 and it too handles scratches very well. I am pleased with this unit so far. It does not "stop on a dime" like the Panasonic RV31 when FF or RR (The Panasonic will stop and play exactly where you are when you press play, the Toshiba may skip forward or back a frame or three!)
As for my only complaint, the benefits far outweigh the flaws in this unit. It is quiet, loads quickly and easily, and is fairly easy to navigate. This unit has most of the bells and whistles of other units (Black level control, extended sound control, multi-level zoom). I have even heard that this unit can playback DVD-R, but I haven't tried that yet (anyone have a DVD-R burner yet?).
As for connections, this unit has all the typical connections: Component out(1 set), S-video out(1), coaxial video out(1), analog audio out(1), coaxial audio out(1), and optical audio out(1). It does have a removable AC cord.

ps. Don't expect the same price from Goodguys. Not only do they under-perform as a retailer, they tend to be shiesty. I worked out a deal for the price I paid.

Strength:

Great picture & sound, quiet.

Weakness:

None so far.

After viewing many reviews here, I was torn between the Sony DVP-S360 and the Toshiba SD2700. I finally decided to buy the Toshiba SD2700 (this is a 2001 model actually), even though all my other A/V components are Sony, and, so far, have had no regrets for purchasing it.

It has just as many features, with a few extras, as the Sony but costs less. The picture and sound quality are great. And the machine is totally quiet. I don't have it in an enclosed cabinet and I don't hear anything coming from the unit during playback.

This unit has HDCD decoding which I haven't really been able to test. None of the DVD's I've played could take advantage of this. Toshiba claims that it will enhance non-HDCD audio CD's, but I hear very little difference.

Overall, I'm completely satisfied with this product.

Strength:

brilliant clarity, swap disks while one is playing, CD-R(W) compatible, optical audio out, zoom is awesome, solid design, multiple scan speeds

Weakness:

small non-illuminated remote, sluggish operation while scanning

This review is for the SD2705, five disc changer.

My first DVD player, what a good decision this was. The elements I wanted were: CD-R(W) playback, zoom, multiple angles, simulated surround sound, and optical audio out, without breaking the bank. This model has it all. I could have gotten a similar 1 disc capacity player for $200, but figured the 5 disc model was worth it for only $50 more; especially since I'm using it as my CD player. It doesn't decode Dolby 5.1 or DTS but supports those modes and the optical out means that when I get a new receiver, the sound will be excellent. It comes with yellow, red, and white RCA cables (which is a nice touch) but for the best quality, spring for the Component cables...they are totally worth it.

The zoom is definately the coolest feature. It has 4-5 levels of magnification while still retaining good resolution and you can pan around the screen while zoomed in either while paused or while playing. I'm not disappointed about this purchase at all.

Strength:

Picture quality, compact size, great price.

Weakness:

At this price??!! Maybe the remote, but even that isn't too bad.

This thing is amazing. It has played everything I have thrown at it including the Matrix. All are rentals, so they are not in perfect condition. The video quality is excellent. I am very picky about that. I work in a video post production house and I edit digital video every day. Everything I see at work is D1 component video and is viewed on equipment that costs more than my house. Trust me the SD2700 has really nice video. It also has the outputs I want for future upgrades. All said this thing really kicks for the money. Okay, the remote is kinda stinky, but I can live with it. I bought it in June at eCost.com who now is selling it for $140!!!!!

No, I am not using audio/video phile equipment at home, but I do make an effort to select stuff that makes pretty pictures and sound. I have an older Denon integrated amp/processor, Definitive satellites and sub, and a Panasonic CT27SF12 TV. Plus an ancient Mitsubishi VCR that still works great after 10+ years. Also, a Pioneer laser disc player.

Also if you want to get some very useful information about DVD players do yourself a favor and go here:

https://www.theabsolutesound.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/scstore/tpv_store_content.html?E+scstore

and download the DVD Players Buyer Guide in PDF for $5. It covers the gamut from units costing $12,000 to less than $200. This is from a magazine called The Perfect Vision. TPV is published by the same folks who put out The Absolute Sound. They really know their video.

All I have to say is WOW !!!
That one word sums it all up.
Component video color decoder is dead on accurate and awesome !!!! You want dimension, colorstream delivers !!!
S-Video is awesome as well.
Picture & Audio is just WOW !!! Holy Sh^%$T !!!
AWESOME resolution and detail beyond belief especially with component inputs.
Good Sound as well.

Weakness:

You can not have s-video and component running at the same time.
I do not think there is a pluge adjustment, but the player does not need it as the Blacks are blacker than black.
Biggest complaint , THE REMOTE STINKS, PERIOD.

Plain and simple, I bought every freakin' dvd player out there to test to see which one produced the best picture in the sub 1000 category.
I did not like Sony off the bat because the picture was too darn soft and the reason people buy dvds is for resolution and crisp clarity. (Sony is like looking at a super VHS video tape)
Panasonic is significantly more vivid than the sony and it is the dvd player that I have owned the longest dvd A115 , it is rated at 4.47 on here.
I bought a bunch of dvd players recently and just when I thought my dvd player was the best choice , I came across the Toshiba 2705. The reviews on the 2700 were quite good so I tried the changer.
Holy Moly !!!!!!!! I am sold all the way.
I have played my reference disc sleepy hollow on all three dvd players Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba.
Toshiba beat them all hands down even using a cheapo s-video cord while the other 2 players were hooked up by monster cables s-video.
Then you add the colorstream component and that's it game over , we have a winner.
I have wasted many freakin' hours to prove that all players are not alike. The toshiba handles anything you throw at it, matrix, gladiator, sleepy hollow, and the Fifth element.
Clarity, crispness, vivid, and good sound too.

I rate it an 8.50.
I took 1/2 a point off because you can not use the s-video and component video at the same time.
I also took 1 point off because of the darn sucky remote. (It sucks and nothing can save it)
A nice joystick remote with good ergonomics would have made this DVD player a 9.50 !!!!

If you can get over the poor remote and the fact you have to choose between component video or s-video, this machine scores a 10.

Again Holy Smokes , I am a believer !!!!!!!

I do not know how this compares to the dvd sd2200 as far as I know the sd2200 is a double tray dvd player and offers built in dolby digital and DTS and offers 40 more lines of resolution. The sd2200 will most likely sound better and may offer a slight advantage over the sd2705. I can't imagine the 2700 being better. I will eventually find out as I just purchased a 2700 on-line and will compare the 2 side by side.

Panasonic good picture and solid reliability.

Component Video, S-Video, Digital Outs, Plays CD-R's, Ease of use, Overall great DVD player

Weakness:

None that I've found yet

All I wanted was a DVD player with component video, s-video, digital outs, and that played cd-r's, and wasn't going to break on me. That's it. I found it here with the Toshiba SD2700. Toshiba's quality is very important to me, as I hate nothing more than buying something and having it not work well. AKA: SONY. It looks and sounds great on my Toshiba 27A40 TV, and even better with my Harman Kardon AVR 210 Receiver. If you want a good quality DVD player that does a lot, pick this one up. They're still pretty cheap on ubid.com too.

My Current Setup:

Harman Kardon AVR 210
Toshiba 27A40 27" TV
Toshiba SD 2700 DVD
Samsung VCR
Sega Dreamcast
Klipsch KSCC1 Center Channel (Another steal on UBID)
JVC SXF7 Towers as mains
Sony SSMF415 Towers as surrounds

Weakness:

Remote has no light

I got a great deal on this unit at Ubid. Brand new unit for $139 and $20 rebate for first time winner too. I ended up paying $136 total for it. This player is awesome. I got a HD ready TV. Originally, I was going to wait for the Tohisha sd4700 prog scan to come out, but I saw this deal and it was too good to be missed. Now I don't even know if I need a prog scan player, because I am not sure if the picture quality could get any better! One note to the new owner of this unit, make sure you switch out of the NORMAL mode using your EPM button. The NORMAL (default) is the worst of the 5 modes IMHO. I like Movie 2 mode the best. The only problem I have with it is the remote has no light, but I don't think any DVD player in this price range will have a backlight on its remote. I am sure when I get use to it, I will know where all the buttoms are.

Ausio track sometimes skips (May be disks)

This is one kick ass DVD player. I love my home theatre. The output from my Receiver in very good. I can watch all action movies at about 3/5ths full sound with no distortion, just alot of rattling of unsecure items in the room.

Used with:
JVC RX-778VBK Receiver (DD 5.1, no DTS, 500W, 2 optical & 0 coaxial dig. in)
JBL N24 bookshelfs (100W)

This player was a steal at $200. This is the best player on the market in the sub $1000 category. If you don't have a need for a progressive scan player, than this is it. It does everything a DVD player is supposed to do, and better than most other players on the market. The other great thing about this player is that it does NOT have a built in AC-3 decoder, which means my receiver does what it was built to do. Finally, I also like the small footprint of this player.

Incompatible digital interface with Yamaha A/V Receivers!

Just want to warn anyone who owns a recent Yamaha A/V receiver! After much research on this site and others I purchased the Yamaha RXV800 and then the Toshiba 2705. I then started to question my sanity. When I hooked them up with a digital coax cable and then paused, ff, or made any selection during a DVD movie that should have had muted sound, a horrible digital feedback noise comes on. I went and bought a second 2705, same problem. I brought my Yamaha back to Good Guys and they hooked it up to a 2700 and it worked fine. Finally, I called Toshiba Customer Support. They were very nice and informed me that they were aware of the compatibility problem with Yamaha receivers and were trying to figure out a fix. Meanwhile, as I want a decent 5-disc changer, I think I'll have to go with maybe the Pioneer DVC503. All in all, it's been a LOT of time wasted on an otherwise nice machine (works fine with analog audio connection, incidently).
