Strength:

Increadible picture for a bargain player; extra 4 spaces for DVD's CD's.

Weakness:

wish it had a jog shuttle dial on the remote

This review is for the 2705 changer.

Thank you to all the other reviewers under this category. I was looking for a new DVD player to replace my old one which lacked DTS capabilities. I checked the various models available at my local chain stores, then came home and checked all the reviews. Most of the other players I saw had mediocre reviews. The ones that almost universally were loved were the Toshiba 2700 and 2705. I figured I'd pick one up and see if you guys knew what you were talking about.

Well, you did! Mind you, I went from a top of the line first generation player to the Toshiba, so I wasn't expecting much. The picture is increadible, detailed and accurate. I wasn't expecting this much of a difference in quality, but disc after disc that I put on for comparison showed it was true. For the price, you really can't go wrong with this unit.

I can't really speak to music performance as I've got the unit connected to an external DAC.

My system:

Mitsubishi 45" projection set (can't remember model)
NAD T-761 (used as pre/pro/tuner/rr amp)
NAD 2700THX (main channel amp)
NAD 2200 (bridged center amp)
NAD 512 CD Player
Toshiba 2705 DVD
Pioneer LV610 Laserdisc
Sony T-60 direc TIVO
Sony VCR
Tara Labs cables
Energy 5.1e main speakers
Energy C100 center
Energy 3.1e surrounds
Energy ES12 sub

Strength:

amazing picture, flawless operation with tons of rented and new discs

Weakness:

remote

Originally purchased the SD-1600 and loved it for a week. I returned to the store and saw the SD-2700. The CD-R reading capabilities and the optical output sold me. I returned the 1600 and for $25 upgraded to the 2700.

I use component video hookups to my Toshiba 27A50 television and am extremely impressed with the picture. I’m a student on a tight budget, so I’m living with just the tv and the DVD player for the time being. I rent a lot of discs and my Toshiba has never even hiccuped. As mentioned, the remote is not the very best, but it’s still very workable.

I highly recommend the SD-2700 to anyone interested in experiencing what DVD can really do for movies.

5/5 all the way.

Strength:

Features (zoom, slow mo, picture modes, sound modes), plays CDR-RW and VCD, Price, and Picture, Quality

Weakness:

Auto starts (irritating), basic remote (not b/l, not learning/programmable) but your receiver remote is more critical.

I bought this unit based on the positive reviews on Toshiba DVD players and I have no regrets. Toshiba seems to have the visual part of home entertainment down pat. (I'd like to thank this site/reviewers for also helping me decide on the Yamaha V800 Receiver.)

I also bought it on it's features, which out numbers most other manufacturers (except for Hitachi, but their stuff are of lower quality - picture quality is noticeable).
Features of note:
- Black enhancement
- Centre channel enhancement (great for two speakers)
- Angle change (which movies have this anyway?)
- Bit rate meter (neat to have, rarely refer to it)

The unit is spec'd at 500 lines, but it doesn't matter because DVD's output at only 480 lines. It doesn't have decoding, but that's okay since you should decode at the receiver anyway (unless you have an AC-3 ready one). Plus it's quiet relative to a Sony (sounds like an engine in those things).

Main point is that picture quality is great and at $310 CDN ($200 USD) how can you lose?

Strength:

Cheap for all the features it carries.Plays DVD-R which might come in handy in the future.

Weakness:

Remote could be better. When playing VCD's it kind of lags because it doesn't spin fast enough.

Overall a very good DVD Player. For a price like the one it has it's a good investment. A whole lot of features and it's easy to use. The remote is bearable but it could of been better. Also the fact that it kind of lags when it plays VCD's kind of sucks, but once again it's also bearable. Overall an awsome DVD player that's ideal for your DVD watching needs
